22 SIZING FOR MOTOR LOAD Rule of thumb; Generator size (kw) = motor size (kw) x k. k = factor ranging between 2.5 to 3 Example: Determine Genset size to start a 4 kw Borehole water pump. Explanation: Use rule of thumb; kw = motor size x 2.5 Genset required = (10 kw or 12.5 kva) 22

39 PARALLELING Paralleling is an operation in which multiple power sources, usually two or more generator sets, are connected and synchronized to a common bus. 39

40 WHY SYNCHRONIZE To allow the generating capacity of the system to be expanded as site load increase When site load varies greatly multiple units avoid a scenario of light loading, which will damage the engine Physical constraints of the installation site Allows uninterrupted supply even during servicing/maintenance In some cases, cost 40
