5 URBAN TRANSIT 1NTODUCTION Gen er.ul This publication presents the statistics of firms earning an annual gross operating revenue of $20,000 or more, primarily from urban transit activities. These companies provide public passenger service by means of motor buses, trolley coaches, street cars and subway cars,in the following areas: (a) Major urban and metropolitan areas, I Cities with a population of 5,000 or more, (H Towns and adjoining areas, within a range of three miles, containing total populations of 5,000 or more. Smtistics for firms having both transit and lintr-city bus operations are included either with the "Urban Transit" or "Passenger Bus Statistics" reports, according to the predominant source or revenue. In previous years, information relating to the uter-city and rural services provided by predominantly urhan transit firms could not be separated mm their urban services data however, beginning ith the 1963 issue, breakdowns are now provided it Tables 3 and 4 for operating revenues, initial ovenue passenger fares, revenue vehicle miles and hours, and seat and route miles. As this publication is intended to cover only - he operations of urban transit systems, the following are excluded: (a) Railway commutation services, (b) Ferry companies, c) Taxi, limousine airport service firms, and (d) Firms engaged primarily in charter and school bus operations. To obtain a better picture of the number of initial passenger fares collected in urban transit operations, and of the revenue derived from this activity, reference should be made to Table 10. In addition to the statistics on urban passenger operations for firms included in this report, this table contains data on urban passenger operations for railways and bus lines whose principal revenues nro rf'rvpl from intercity operations. Any other a the passenger operations of bus lines and railways whose principal source of revenue is derived from intercity operations is not included in this report. Although not all firms deriving revenue from urban transit activities are included in this report the coverage is considered representative of the industry. Among the factors which cause fluctuations in the data and the number of firms covered by the report are: (a) Amalgamations, (b) Births and deaths in the industry, (c) Expansions and contractions due to business conditions, and (d) Improvements in response due to intensive follow-up programmes. StaUstical Synopsis The number of firms reporting in 1968 decreased by two compared to 1967, one in the Atlantic Prov - inces and one in Alberta. These firms are now reporting to the Passenger Bus Survey. The same number of systems, for 1967 and 1968, reported in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Colum bia. One of the major highlights of 1968 was the opening of the easterly and westerly extensions of the Bloor-Danforth subway. The easterly extension runs from Woodbine station to Warden station, a distance of 2.72 miles. The westerly extension runs from Keele station to Islington station, a distance of 3.44 miles. The two extensions increased the length of the Toronto Metro's crosstown subway line to 14 miles. Based on the data of Table 3 on page 10, the total operating revenue increased by 2.2 per cent, with increases in all provinces except in the province of Quebec and Manitoba, the 64 per cent decrease in revenue and the 7.1 per cent decrease in the number of passenger fares collected in 1968, reflect the impact caused by "Expo" in The number of miles travelled increased by 1.4 per cent over However, the number of accidents reported decreased by 9.0 per cent. The number of persons killed increased from 37 in 1967 to 42 in Table 5on page 12, shows that Urban transit systems continue to increase their number of motor buses powered by diesel engines. The subway system in Toronto has again shown a remarkable increase in the numhar of p sspflnprs rarri'd.
