5 LED Basics LED = Light Emitting Diode An LED is a light emitting semiconductor device. It creates light by converting electrons into photons. There are two regions in an LED needed to create light, a P-Region and a N-Region. P Material is positively charged. It is missing negatively charged electrons. There are little holes where the electrons belong. N Material is negatively charged. It has extra of the negatively charged electrons Photons (light) are generated when electrons travel from the P-Material into the N-Material. The color of light is determined by how far the electron has to travel

6 How to Turn an LED On An LED turns on differently than other light sources. It requires Direct Current (DC) instead of Alternating Current (AC). Each individual white LED needs about 3 volts to turn on. LEDs are very sensitive to voltage so careful attention is needed to supply just the correct amount. To accomplish this an LED Driver is used. LED Driver: a self-contained power supply that's outputs are matched to the LEDs. Most LED drivers are Constant Current, meaning that they were designed to output the same current even if the output voltage changes. Input voltage: ranges in the US from residential (120V AC) to commercial (277V AC) and from country to country Output current: depends on LED and how they are arranged LED s drive current ranges from 20mA up to many Amps There are series & parallel connections Output voltage: can range from about 3V (enough to turn on one LED) to hundreds of volts (enough to turn on a large string of LEDs. Input voltage: 120V AC Output voltage range: V DC Output current: 350mA Output power: up to 10W Input voltage: Universal ( V AC) Output voltage range: 24-72V DC Output current: 350mA Output power: 25W

7 LEDs & Heat Even though LEDs are very efficient they aren t 100% (yet ). They create both LIGHT and HEAT when they are on. In order for LEDs to operate correctly, and last for a long time, they have to stay cool. LED lifetime is directly related to temperature. A general rule of thumb is that for every 10⁰ C cooler you keep an LED the lifetime doubles. The amount of light an LED emits also changes with temperature. On a warm day and LED will emit less light than on a cool day Every LED light you see uses some sort of heat sink to pull the heat away. Heat sinks can range from pieces of metal with fins to the lamp housings themselves.

16 Energy Star Luminaires V1.0 Directional luminaires and inseparable luminaires will be tested using luminaire photometry (already required in SSL spec). Non-directional products with replaceable light sources will be tested using source photometry (already required in RLF spec). Provisions for high intensity discharge luminaires (HID) were added. Halogen luminaires have photo/motion sensor requirements. Efficacy levels were raised for most products.
