The new 240l wheelie bin system, which the metro describes as ''more hygienic and userfriendly'' no longer allows for the collection of plastic refuse bags or other rubbish not placed inside wheelie bins. In addition, only bins supplied by the municipality will be emptied. Dougie Douglas took his refuse bags to the EMM's Brakpan Customer Care Centre on Friday morning, and discarded them inside the rates hall. "You have a right to do this as you regularly pay your rates and taxes for the municipality to remove your refuse," he said. According to Douglas, the municipality cannot refuse to collect rubbish if it is not inside a wheelie bin. He cited a number of reasons, including that the bins are often stolen and that non-collection is a health and safety hazard. "If refuse is not collected, they cannot charge me for refuse collection," he said. "Citizens should think about initiating a class action suit against the municipality for not collecting the refuse." He also bemoaned the fact that residents were not notified of the implementation. This was evident by the hundreds of complaints the Herald received. A 70-year-old woman relayed how she had chased the waste removal truck for a block, after realising they had not collected her rubbish. "They wouldn't take it, because it's in an old bin, but they broke the new one," she said, adding that she would be dumping her rubbish along Voortrekker Road. Another resident commented that "they want to do less work and steal more of our money". Gesturing to his colleagues to help, he was quickly stopped when they pointed out he was being watched. The Herald's presence also ensured that the bins, which are usually left in the middle of the road after they have been emptied, were returned to their correct addresses and neatly placed on the pavement or in the driveway. Notices, containing information about the new system, were handed out to those residents who queried why their rubbish wasn't being taken away. These notices, which were also distributed to households in some areas of Brakpan over the festive season, were titled ''Press release - Brakpan Herald'', to which the Herald took umbrage, as they were neither written nor distributed by the paper. In fact, the Herald received no prior notification from the municipality about the implementation, and the information contained in the notice was verified by metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe only on Monday, Call us now this week. "The information in the notice, which Waste Management Services intended for publication in the Brakpan Herald, is valid," said Gadebe. Meanwhile, Brakpan has become a rubbish dump. This is the only way council will remove your refuse: The notice reads: The changeover from the plastic bag system to to the wheelie bin system is in progress throughout the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in order to eliminate some operational and service delivery inefficiencies, and to enhance legislative compliance with regard to service standards and cost reflectiveness of the Waste Management Service's tariff structure. As the roll-out of the 240l bin system has now been completed in the Brakpan area, it must be noted that, as from January 1, 2015: Only 240l bins supplied by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will be emptied. No 240l bin not displaying the Ekurhuleni, EMM and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality logo will be emptied. 3 Friday, January 16, 2015 BRAKPAN HERALD NEWS 3 Worshond en kolgans is dik pêlle n Ietwat ongewone vriendskap tussen n miniatuur worshond en n baba kolgans het die afgelope week ontwikkel, nadat die kolgansie uit sy nes geval en deur n weldoener gered is. Hannetjie Basson, van Germainslaan, hou al vir n geruime tyd n kolganspaar dop wat in n palmboom, oorkant haar huis nes gemaak en gebroei het. Die boom is bietjie hoog en selfs met n verkyker kon ons nie sien of daar baba s was nie, maar ek het so vermoed, het sy vertel. Verlede Woensdag het sy nader gestap om te kyk of sy nie iets kon gewaar nie en toe sien sy n piepklein kolgansie onder die palmboom lê. n Buurman het vir my gesê dat hy vroeër die dag gesien het hoe die twee volwasse kolganse met ses kleintjies wegstap. Ek is nie seker waarom net die enetjie agter gebly het nie, het Hannetjie vertel. Sy het haar oor die klein gansie ontferm en dit huistoe geneem. Ek was bietjie bekommerd oor my worshond se reaksie, maar die twee het sommer dadelik vriende geraak. Gansie, soos die kolgans gedoop is, loop die hele dag agter Floozy, die worshond, aan en die twee knip selfs n uiltjie saam. Wanneer Floozy pap kry is Gansie gou by om saam te eet en Floozy lek weer aan die fyn mielies wat ons vir die gans gee. Hannetjie het ook groot houers met water uitgesit sodat die klein kolgans kan swem. Sy het nog nie besluit wat om met die gans te doen nie, maar sy gaan dit waarskynlik aan n familielid, wat n plaas met n dam het, gee. Intussen geniet sy die woelinge tussen die worshond en die gans. Dit is amper soos twee stout kinders in die huis. Volgens inligting van die internet, leef kolganse in groot kolonies saam wanneer hulle nie broei nie. As die broeiseisoen aanbreek, vorm hulle pare wat baie territoriaal word. Hulle sit gewoonlik op hoë plekke (byvoorbeeld in bome of op die dak van n gebou) wat oor hul terrein uitkyk. Kolganse is grasvreters; hulle word dus op grasperke en op sportterreine aangetref. Soms maak hulle nes of slaap hulle in bome. Soos ander eende, is hierdie voëls aangepas om in water te leef. Hulle het gewebde voete om mee te swem en waterbestande vere wat hulle glad stryk om dit waterdig te hou. Hulle word langs riviere, op damme en in vleilande en selfs op strande aangetref. Woman robbed at train station A 55-year-old Brenthurst woman was robbed of her handbag, at the Schapensrust Raileay Station, on Monday afternoon, last week. Tammy Frost, who regularly commutes from Brenthurst to Germiston by train, was robbed by two young men shortly before 2pm. "I was sitting at the station, reading, when one of them just came walking up and grabbed my bag," she said. "The other one had been keeping watch and the pair then ran off into the veld." Frost told the Herald that the robbers were very young, and were possibly teenagers. "This is the first time in five years since I've been catching the train that anything like this has happened," she said. "I just want to warn other residents to be careful." Donate your unwanted books The Lions Club of Benoni holds a book sale at the Mall@Carnival every second Friday of the month. The next sale will take place on February 13. All proceeds go towards fundraising, and are used to take care of those in need of assistance. According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend: Friday A would-be robber was arrested by police in Brakpan North. The robber and an accomplice, who evaded capture, had attempted to rob a man of his cellphone. The victim was confronted by the pair as he was walking through the veld, near Ellis Street, at about 10.15am. The robbers held him at gunpoint and searched him, taking his cellphone. When the complainant resisted and grabbed his cellphone back, he was struck on the head with the firearm. He managed to run away and stopped passers-by for assistance, and the police were then called. The suspect faces a charge of robbery with a firearm. A woman was robbed by three men along Selbourne Avenue. She arrived home at about 12.45pm and was unloading items from her car, when she noticed three men in the street. Two of them suddenly jumped over the fence and ran towards her. They pointed a silver firearm at her and told her to ''shut up''. They ripped a ring valued at R from her finger, and fled. Television sets were stolen from homes along Bottlebrush Street and Louis Leipoldt Street, Dalpark. A business along Prince George Avenue was burgled of various goods, including tyres and a step ladder. Saturday A man was robbed of his wallet and other items by a gang of men, along Location Road. The complainant was travelling towards Brakpan North, at about 8.30pm, when a grey BMW suddenly drove in front of him, forcing him to stop. An Audi (model and colour unknown) had also stopped behind him. An armed male approached the man's vehicle and told him to open the doors. The robber held the gun to his head and instructed him to keep quiet. Three other robbers then came to the car and took the victim's wallet, his vehicle's sound equipment, including the radio and amplifier, and tools. Sunday No information was received. Naas Malan (69), van Germainslaan, is baie in sy noppies met die sonneblom wat op sy sypaadjie groei. Police promote spiritual upliftment Brakpan police held a Prayer Hour at the police station on Thursday morning, last week. The aim of the event, which was organised by Capt Joep Joubert (left), was to boost the spiritual morale of SAPS members. The police station s chaplain, Rev Godfrey Booysen (right) conducted the sermon and local singer Darius Joubert sang gospel songs. Dawn Duncan writes by I live opposite a park in Dalpark and, on December 30, at 1.30am, I noticed a suspicious-looking white bakkie driving very slowly around the park. Given the fact that we have had four robberies in five days within a radius of 500m, I felt it my duty to phone our local police patrol. I phoned the number, which rang for ages and was then answered by a voice which advised me that the message inbox was full. I was shocked. What is the point of having a patrol when you cannot even raise them on their phone? These numbers and the areas to which they apply are published in the Brakpan Herald regularly. What a waste of time and printing space when the people who are meant to be in the area 24 hours a day for the safety of the residents are not available when needed. No wonder the burglars are having such a profitable time. As for the secure booms at the entrances of our area - what can one say? Police fl ats an eyesore ''Concerned Brakpan resident'' writes by I was taking a walk in December, along Station Road and down Taft Street, and I cannot believe what I saw at the police station flats. The surroundings were overgrown with grass, there was litter everywhere and water was running down the road. Maybe I expected, because it is our police department, that it would be clean and an example to us. Obviously I was mistaken. Surely there are children staying in those flats? Is it not a health risk and do you really allow your children to play in such an area? Just asking. They do not mention what these inefficiencies were. They wanted to enhance legislative compliance with regard to service standards and cost reflectiveness (probably should be effectiveness) of the Waste Management Service s tariff structure. Again, they do not explain what the tariff structure of Waste Management Services is or was. They do not mention what the legislative compliance with regard to service standards is or was. Does the Weltevreden Landfill Site comply with the legislative standards? Has any of this been done with input from the community and consultation with the community (look at the Sanral fiasco)? Only 240L bins supplied by EMM will be emptied -- do they realise that, with time, these EMM emblems will eventually fade away? No additional refuse bags, branches or any form of refuse that is not inside the bin or fits exactly in the bin will be removed and one can apply to Waste Management for extra bins at extra costs. What if refuse piles up when collectors go on strike or miss a week -- will all refuse be collected next time around? Why do the collectors send one person ahead, who then drags all the bins to one point at the end of the street for collection (and never returns them to the original positions from which they were dragged, thus creating an even bigger chance of them being stolen). They also take the bags out of the bins so they can throw them into the dump truck when the wonderful dump system of the truck is out of commission, or because it is easier to load, thus making a mockery of the reason for the bin. This way they also do not know how much refuse comes from one household. Will the collectors clean up the rubbish they spill from emptying the bins or the bags they tear when they collect the waste? What happens when the rubbish scroungers come around, take bags out of the bin for scrounging and never put them back in the bin before collection; will they also then not remove that rubbish bag, which was no fault of the tax-paying citizen? How long does it take before one receives another bin after the one you placed out for collection has been stolen? Will the refuse of such a taxpaying household be collected while they wait for a new bin? Will the council publish the audited amount of money gathered from the sale of rubbish wheelie bins? Compactable garden refuse can also be disposed of free of charge at any of the mini garden disposal sites in Brakpan. Will they improve the roads for easier access for those without 4x4 vehicles? Will they cut the sidewalk lawns of all homesteads on a weekly basis, as it is part of the municipality's and not the homeowner s property, as they used to in the bad old days (as one is and will be fined for cutting/ pruning branches off trees on one s sidewalk)? Please reduce, re-use and recycle where possible. I placed all my tins, glass and plastic in separate bags at one stage, but, never saw the refuse collectors make a distinction between any of them, just piling them all into the garbage truck in one heap. There is no system for recycling within the Ekurhuleni Waste Collection methods and disposals. These are empty words by incompetent salary-eating bureaucrats, making empty speeches and promises at expensive tax paid for functions. Will the waste collector workforce s salary be halved because their workload has been halved? If I ask my CEO to take away some of my responsibilities he/she will also want to take away some of my salary. Does the wheelie bin rule also apply to Vosloorus, Tsakane, KwaThema, etc., (and not just formerly white townships?), and, please publish the rate of payment received for rates and taxes, refuse removal, etc., from these townships. Solution for hygienic collection -- why does the municipality not legislate that rubbish bags must be placed on the sidewalks of houses on erected structures, so that dogs and cats cannot tear at them? The only problem will then be if rubbish scroungers take them down from the installation to scrounge through the rubbish and then do not replace them. Ask that rubbish like plastic, glass and tin are placed in different coloured bags and then also collect these in a separate way for recycling. This is a modern world, where man has walked on the moon and we have landed a spacecraft on an asteroid, but we cannot collect recycled matter in an orderly fashion? They fired bomb crackers and other fireworks on New Year's Eve. Ekurhuleni amends its loadshedding schedule In its efforts to reduce inconveniences experienced by residents as a result of ongoing load shedding around the country, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has amended its load shedding schedules. The newly designed schedules respond to complaints received from residents, stating that the previous schedules were not favorable to all areas and that some residential areas did not appear on the schedule. "When Eskom declares stage one or two load shedding, which is controlled by municipalities, the latest schedule that is now available on the website will be the one that the municipality uses in implementing load shedding in Ekurhuleni" said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

Distinctions galore at Brakpan High Brakpan High School's matric class of 2014 attained a 94 per cent pass rate. A number of learners attained distinctions and the school boasted high marks in accounting, mathematics and physical sciences. According to school principal Lucky Nkopane, the school had a 100 per cent pass rate in practical subjects such as computer applications technology and consumer studies, a 98 per cent pass rate in mathematics and maths literacy, and a 90 per cent pass rate in physical sciences. The school's top learner was Nelisiwe Kunene, who obtained five distinctions for, mathematics, geography, life sciences, physical sciences and life orientation. The following learners obtained four distinctions each: Kajol Gowtham (English home language, life sciences, accounting and computer applications technology) Siphiwe Nyakane (accounting, business studies, tourism and life orientation) Zanele Sibanyoni (mathematics, life sciences, physical sciences and life orientation). A large number of learners attained university entrance. "We are very proud as a school because we achieved this quality of results despite being bogged down by challenges throughout 2014," said Nkopane. "I would like to congratulate my learners for a job well done and to wish them all the best in their future endeavours." Muriel Brand School s matric class of Muriel Brand School does it once again Muriel Brand School has attained a 100 per cent pass rate for the 15th consecutive year. The school is one of only a handful of schools in the Gauteng area that has achieved a 100 per cent pass rate for five or more years consecutively. A little less than half of the learners achieved university exemption. Saturday School opens Brakpan High School will again be opening its doors on Saturdays, to accommodate extra schooling. New registrations are welcome and learners can do so at the school tomorrow (Saturday), as well as on Saturdays, January 24 and 31. The Saturday School caters for learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Subjects offered are mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical sciences, life sciences, accounting, business studies, economics and geography. The Saturday School is managed by the Sci- Com Foundation, a mathematics, science and commerce initiative, and is sponsored by the Afrisun Community Trust and Carnival City. Panne prepare for new season Brakpan Rugby Club will have a shorter season in 2015 than in previous years. This comes after the club s first team failed to qualify for this year s 2015 Cell C Community Cup. The club s sides commenced with Don t miss Rockmania training for the new campaign last week. The Panne will field four sides this year (a first XV, a second XV, an u-21 team and an u-20 team). The golf director and club professional at the Royal Oak Country Club, Kenneth Dube, did not have the best two days on the fairways and greens of Glendower Golf Club, during the first and second rounds of the South African Open, hosted by Ekurhuleni, on Thursday and Friday, January 8 and 9. Dube shot 79 on the Thursday and 80 on the Friday, which put him among those who did not the cut. The local professional did, however, do extremely well to qualify for one of the oldest open tournaments in golf, after carding a fantastic 66 at the SA Open qualifier, at Irene Country Club, the previous week. Speaking about his experience at Glendower, Dube said: It was an extremely tough golf course to play, but I enjoyed the experience a lot. They will face Pretoria Bobbies, North West University (Pukke) and Vereeniging in the group stages of the tournament. The warm-up matches on January 31 will start with the u-21 game at 1.30pm, the second team at 2.30pm and the first To play with some of the big names in golf was really great. He added that he will now team at 4pm on the A-field. Following the conclusion of the Assupol Super Club Series the club will look forward to the Valke Peregrine League with an aim of qualifying for the 2016 version of the Cell C Community Cup. The bike contender, riding his Broadlink KTM, withdrew during stage eight of the challenge after he suffered mechanical problems with his bike after crossing a salt pan on Monday, January 12. He, like many other top riders, to score a ton in their short league existence, following Aiden Justus s century against Tembisa, in October, last year. The home side s bowlers performed equally well with the ball and wrapped up the Duduza order within the 32nd over. Captain Gamble s slow left arm deliveries accounted for four Duduza scalps (4/23 in 7.2 overs), while fast bowler was forced to end their Dakar journey as the salt water found its way into the electrical system. This came after van Niekerk enjoyed his best day of the rally the day before with a tenth overall placing. On his Facebook page he expressed his disappointment with the irreparable mechanical issue. It rained the night before so the lake was covered in water. Kevin Hinton again performed with the cherry and attained figures of 3/30 in 10 overs. Team manager Des Gamble was thrilled with the way the team played in their first game since the break. We finally played to our full potential and fulfilled our game plan, he said. Now we re in an age where George Jetson himself would feel comfortable with Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Google all producing self-driving vehicles. Imagine going to work in your personal vehicle and watching your favorite series, sporting highlights or even playing games? It s coming sooner than you d think. MERCEDES-BENZ F 015 LUXURY IN MOTION As the German manufacturer so eloquently states, its self-driving luxury sedan concept shows how the car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a private retreating space PEOPLE CARRIER As you can see from the image, the F 015 is a big vehicle with a length of 5 220mm, a width of 2 018mm and 1 524mm high. The long wheelbase and short overhangs and the fact that it only has seating for four, means it s been made to maximize the amount of space to enhance comfort and luxury. Think of it as a very fancy train carriage, only with added privacy and the fl exibility to avoid those pesky railroads. DESIGN Outside, the Mercedes features what it calls a monolithic exterior with large LED light modules at the front and rear. The lights can show if the car is being driven autonomously (blue) or manually (white) while at the rear a short message such as Stop or Slow can be displayed. Yes, those are 26-inch wheels that are crossdrilled into fi ve areas of aluminium. There is a low front end, a streamlined roof line and a fl at-front windshield. INSIDE THE LOUNGE Inside has been designed to be lounge-like with organic materials such as walnut wood and soft ice white Nappa leather, which contrasts with metal and glass surfaces. There s also a variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-to-face seat confi guration. SCREENS, SCREENS AND MORE SCREENS The autonomous concept features several display screens to provide occupants with information. There s the traditional main display in the dashboard, a head-up display in the windshield area, touch screens in the sides of the vehicle, a screen between the rear seats as well as a rear table with extending touch-sensitive display for games or video conferences. HOW DOES IT KNOW? The autonomous Benz works by using 360-degree stereo cameras as well as radar and ultrasonic sensors to relay data. The GPS data together with the accurate 3D navigation maps make sure the position can be pinpointed to the exact centimetre. The F 015 identifi es its owner or user by means of their smartphone or wearable device. Once the user has been authenticated, the doors open automatically and the seats swivel into position. PICK-ME-UP MERCEDES The F 015 becomes an integral part of the cloud which means that if you are an authorized user you can access the vehicle s information and functions from your PC, Tablet or Smartphone. This means, you can send it to pick the kids up from school while you re at work and then later it will ensure that you get a parking space at the mall after it drops you off at the entrance. THE WAY OF THE FUTURE We ve been sitting around dreaming up some of the benefi ts of automated driving here at Autodealer. The previous C1 was an honest budget option; the new one is a more boutique, designer city car, very much like the Fiat 500. DESIGN The looks are very important in a city car so the extrovert look that Citroën has gone for with the C1 looks great. The front-end took a bit of time to adjust to but after a while the little silhouette became quite cute. ENGINE AND EFFICIENCY I had the opportunity to drive one recently and what a surprise the little city slicker turned out to be. First of all, I was impressed with the engine; the pokey little 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine has 61kW and 116Nm on tap. I thought it would underwhelm me but in fact it provided great low-end torque; there wasn t much in the higher rpm but the way it s been geared and mapped makes the C1 ideal for the urban sprawl. The little motor is exempt from CO2 tax as well, with ratings of 99g/km of CO2. While I was unable to replicate the claimed fuel consumption figures city car of 4.3 litres/100km, I did manage around 5.5 in a week where traffic appeared to be relentless. CUSTOMISE The C1 is certainly a car for someone who likes customisation at a dealer level; my test unit was finished off in sunrise red, which went on through into the interior, finished off in red zebra, which meant the car really stood out everywhere I went and the interior was a vibrant place to be. BREATH OF FRESH AIR The model I had on test was the Airscape, which has a canvas roof that opens at the touch of a button. The nice thing about it is there are still the vehicle s pillars in place while you maintain that open-top driving experience. REFINEMENT SURPRISE I ve spent quite a bit of time this year in budget vehicles. I love how honest they are but to be truthful, the noise and rough ride some exhibit can become tiresome. That s where the C1 impressed me most; it s both quiet and refined on the open road with a well-matched fifth gear for open-road cruising. PRACTICALITY This isn t a family car; it s aimed at a single, 20-something, who wants to cruise around in something light on fuel and that looks good in the city. The 196-litre boot is better than its predecessor s (139 litres) as well as the 780 litres of space with the seats down. THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM There s something about the C1 that worries me its price tag of R for this convertible version and that doesn t include a service plan. However, when compared with the Fiat 500C 1.2 Pop (R ) it is cheaper than the Fiat and adds features like climate control and a reversing camera. The 500C fights back with a three-year/ km warranty and maintenance plan that matches the C1 s three-year/ km warranty. One saving grace for the C1 is that it only requires servicing every km, meaning the owner has to fork out less often, while the 500C owners out-of-maintenance plans only have to service their vehicles every km. VERDICT I really enjoyed my time with the little C1. It has a very serious rival in the Fiat 500C but at the same time, the C1 is fresh, whereas the Fiat is getting on a bit. In terms of styling, I think the X-Trail has moved on nicely into a more premium segment with hints of the new Qashqai and Murano throughout its design language. The vehicle itself is longer and wider but certainly hides its extra dimensions well when viewed from the exterior, while its weight has been cut down by some 90kg for good measure. Inside, the new model is seriously spacious; I had the fi ve-seater option however, there is a seven-seat version available. The bigger exterior means more space inside while the seats are fantastic in terms of support and comfort. All the switches, dials and even the fi ve-inch Drive Assist Display are easy to use. There s an incredible 550 litres of boot space and up to litres with the rearmost seats folded away. There s also a double-load fl oor in the boot space, meaning that my laptop bag was safely secured while I stored my semi-slick track-day tyres and alloys in the boot. I was amazed at how well the X-Trail handled the open road; it is truly an impressively comfortable mile-muncher. It makes use of the Common Module Family (CMF) platform which appears to be a very solid platform if both this and the Qashqai are anything to go by. All models also get Active Ride Control, which monitors the road surface to detect undulations, which could potentially upset the pitch of the vehicle s body and alters damping to compensate. This helped with the perception that the X-Trail was gliding along the road. I would be lying if I said that I tested the All-Mode 4x4i system to its full potential but I do think that I did what the majority of X-Trail owners would do and that is drive down a dirt road where I used Auto function of the selectable four-wheel-drive, the others being 2WD and 4WD Lock. I had the 126kW/233Nm 2.5 SE model with the PHOTOS: QUICKPIC Xtronic CVT gearbox and four-wheel-drive on test and was surprised at what it had to offer. I fi rst thought that its relatively large motor would be thirsty but I managed to get around 9.2 litres/100km. Then the CVT seemed to match the engine well whereas in previous naturally aspirated CVT vehicles I experienced an annoying drone. It is very well equipped with electric windows all-round, a multi-function steering wheel, radio, CD, MP3/WMA, USB and auxiliary input, Bluetooth, cruise control, daytime running lights, electrically adjustable and folding mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, Active Ride Control and Active Trace Control, an electronic parking brake, automatic headlight and wiper systems, front fog lamps with chrome detailing, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, dual-zone automatic climate control, six speakers, Hill Descent Control, Active Engine Brake on Xtronic models and roof rails. The exclusive model has been produced to celebrate the Italian marque s collaboration with Italian tyre manufacturer, Pirelli. I recently spent a couple of days with the 6 and I feel that it should certainly be on your shopping list in this segment. If you couple these virtues with the dependability associated with the Mazda brand you get a vehicle that s sure to last as long as you need it to. It s also important to remember that this is the fl agship model of the Mazda range and with pricing that competes with VW and undercuts Honda, the 6 is certainly in contention. I had the 2.5 Individual variant on test with 138kW/250Nm to use. The motor feels good however, as with its smaller Mazda3 sibling, there is a laborious engine note produced when pressing on. Inside the Mazda6 is a great place to be although, when compared with the new Mazda products, the infotainment system appears dated. As we ve come to expect of the Hiroshima-based marque, the fi t and fi nish in the 6 is exemplary. 26 NEWS Luxury Accord-ing to Honda Stuart Moir RECENTLY, claiming its place as a fi nalist in the Car of the Year competition (COTY), we got our hands on the all-new Accord, which enters its ninth generation. Our test mule was the rather large and muscular 3.5-litre V6 i-vtec engine producing a hearty 207kW and 339Nm it gets off the line and to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds. And the fact that it has a decent exhaust note is an added bonus. From a looks point of view, the Accord looks sophisticated and mature, even inside, the wellappointed cabin is fi nished-off perfectly. I ll admit my initial meet and greet with the Honda left me undecided, but after spending a week behind the wheel, it became more diffi cult to give it back. The reasoning is simple...it does everything well, although the 9.2 litres/100km as claimed is a bit of a stretch. The Accord is luxurious, yet understated because it doesn t announce itself when it arrives - it merely slots in. The drive is comfortable and the steering is well weighed, while the sheer interior size (2 923 litres of space for the occupants to be exact) and immense boot space, makes it the complete alternative vehicle. Throw into the mix a healthy dollop of safety features and the Accord looks like an enticing option. ad LETTERS AUTOLETTER OF THE WEEK TO CLAIM OR NOT TO CLAIM Dear Editor IN RESPONSE to your article in Week 49 regarding claiming for pothole damage, I received two letters after lodging a claim for a damaged, brand-new tyre, due to a pothole full of water on North Rand Road. The tyre was fi tted to my son s vehicle on a Saturday morning and that same night, it rained and the pothole was full of water hence, damage to the tyre. I particularly enjoyed paragraph two of one of the letters where it s recorded that they had no knowledge of the pothole. In the fi rst place, we do not reside in Benoni (this happened just over the Atlas Road crossing) and even if we did, the fact remains, there was a pothole in the road and secondly, for goodness sake - the Tel: (011) EAST PAGE 10 WEEK 03 tyre was damaged because a pothole was full of water. Now strangely funny, about two days after we lodged this claim, the pothole was repaired. In this case, everything was done according to the book. We took photographs, completed the necessary forms and made phone calls. What did that help? Sweet nothing! Any excuse not to accept liability, will suffi ce so please, warn your readers, if Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality didn t know about the pothole, you probably don t have a claim. All I ever see them do is speed-trap and from time to time they seem to do spot-checks on licences. Why don t we see them patrolling the streets and monitoring the traffi c? With the recent storms there were the usual traffi c lights out of order and I cannot understand why we can t fi nd all-weather robots. I ve lived in the UK and we hardly experienced problematic traffi c lights in poor weather. Anyway, I digress. While waiting my turn at yet another traffi c light intersection - not turned four-way stop, I heard the radio announcer mentioning the places which had lights out of order. My question is, if the media can let the public know, how come the JMPD doesn t know? Why don t they oversee the traffic chaos? I ask these questions, sincerely, rather than sarcastically. Does traffi c light chaos not fall within their work ambit? I m sure if we saw the JMPD patrolling the roads we would see a reduction in reckless driving, too. Can someone please explain to me what the JMPD s function is and what assistance they actually offer the general public? Some economists predict the price per barrel of Brent crude will fall as low as US$20. LAST week we rejoiced as we saw the petrol price fall by R1.27 a litre for 93-octane and R1.23 a litre for 95-octane, while diesel fell by R1.05 a litre. It s been a while since we ve seen such a dramatic decrease at the pumps and I m sure many cash-strapped consumers will be delighted to hear the news as they try to survive til the end of January - a notouriously diffi cult month. In South Africa, we can enjoy the benefi ts of the lower Brent crude prices, but the heavy drop is largely due to a battle in the world s oil market. Saudi Arabia, it seems, is largely responsible for the new lows in the oil price as the Arab country wants to force its rivals out of business. The question many of us are asking is, will it last? Some economists predict the price per barrel of Brent crude will fall as low as US$20. Good news considering it s currently around US$55 a barrel. Should it reach the predicted low, we will certainly enjoy substantially lower fuel prices in the near future. Add to this, current research shows improved fuel-saving technologies will be the top agenda for many motor manufacturers in the next three years, to produce more effi cient vehicles. Yes, the motor vehicle industry is rapidly evolving and trying to be less reliant on the traditional combustion engine, due to stricter global standards, aiming to limit greenhouse gases and emissions. In the near future (roughly three years) it s predicted that only half the cars in markets like Europe will be powered by traditional petrol engines. Instead, most cars will boast high-tech fuel saving features to improve effi ciency. - Stuart Moir We ve already seen manufacturers like Toyota and Lexus focus heavily on hybrid cars, which use an electric drivetrain, working in unison with a conventional petrol engine to propel the car. Meanwhile, other brands like Nissan and BMW have produced pure electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3, offering a driving range of around 160km. The future is certainly upon us with rapid development in kinetic energy and changes in automotive design to make cars as light as possible with minimum wind resistance. We ve seen energy recovery becoming a vital factor and even making an appearance in Formula One, as we wait for the technology to be improved and trickle into our road-going vehicles. Hydrogen cars have been the buzzword for the last few years. The biggest problem has been trying to store this volatile gas for use in motor cars. Now, Toyota s opening the door to the hydrogen future, making available thousands of hydrogen fuel cell patents royalty-free. Announced at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, this Toyota initiative will spur development and introduction of innovative fuel cell technologies around the world. At Toyota, we believe that when good ideas are shared, great things can happen, said Bob Carter, Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations at Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc. Requests from parts suppliers and companies looking to adapt fuel cell technology outside of the transportation sector will be evaluated on a case by case basis. So, while the price of fuel looks set to drop further, manufacturers are keen to leave this way of powering mobility in the past as they grab new technologies with both hands.
