8 Safety Advice General Safety Advice There is the risk of injury with every use of the electric wheelchair which is contrary to the provisions set out in the operating instructions! Use the wheelchair exclusively in accordance with the directions contained in these instructions! Observe all safety advice especially! Risk of personal injury and /or damage to the electric wheelchair in the event of impaired fitness to drive! Do not use the wheelchair when your fitness to drive is impaired, for example, through medication or alcohol! If necessary, the operation must be carried out by a companion who is mentally and physically capable of doing so! Risk of personal injury if the wheelchair unintentionally begins to move! Switch off the wheelchair before getting on or off it or handling objects which, due to their size, shape or weight, could come into contact with the joystick! When the drive is disengaged, the motor brakes are deactivated. Therefore the pushing of the wheelchair on inclines by a companion is allowed only with extreme caution. Never leave the wheelchair standing with the drive disengaged on or in front of an incline. Always re-engage the drive immediately after a pushing operation! The disengagement is only intended for the companion. Safety Advice about Care and Maintenance Risk of accidents and loss of guarantee are threatened by inadequate maintenance! For reasons of safety and to prevent accidents which occur due to wear and tear not recognized sufficiently early, it is important that the electric vehicle, under normal operating conditions, undergoes a yearly service by your specialist dealer. Under more difficult operating conditions, for example, daily travel on inclines and downward slopes or use in care services with frequently changing wheelchair users, it is advisable to arrange for intermediate checks of the brakes, mounting parts and the chassis to be made! In the event of involvement with public road traffic, the vehicle driver is responsible for the safe operating condition of the vehicle! Faulty or neglected care and maintenance of the vehicle leads to limitation of the manufacturer's liability! - 7 -

9 Safety Advice about Electromagnetic Compatibility This electric vehicle has been successfully tested for its electromagnetic compatibility in accordance with international standards. However, electromagnetic fields can be created, such as those from radio and television stations, radio equipment and mobile telephones, which can potentially affect the function of electric vehicles. The electronics used in our vehicles can also cause weak electromagnetic interference but this lies below the statutory limits. Therefore we kindly ask you to observe the following advice: Risk of Malfunction due to Electromagnetic Radiation! Avoid being in close proximity to strong radio and television transmitters! Should the vehicle unintentionally start to move or the brakes release themselves switch off the vehicle immediately! The addition of electrical accessories and other components to, or the modification of the vehicle can make it more susceptible to electromagnetic radiation / interference. Please be aware that there is no really safe way of determining the effects of such modifications on the interference resistance! Inform the manufacturer of all occurrences of unintentional movements of the vehicle or releasing of the electric brakes! - 8 -

10 Safety Advice about Driving Mode / Pushing Mode Risk of Injury through the Tipping Over of the Electric Wheelchair Only drive on inclines and downhill slopes up to the maximum safe tipping angle (see the technical data) and only with an upright backrest and lowered seat tilt mechanism (if present). Drive on downhill slopes at approx. 2/3 of maximum speed. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration on downhill slopes. Avoid routes on smooth surfaces and on which there is the risk of slipping (snow, gravel, black ice etc.), especially on inclines or downhill slopes. If you absolutely must drive on such a surface, then drive slowly and with the utmost caution. Never try to overcome an obstacle on an incline or downhill slope. Never try to drive up or down a staircase with your electric wheelchair! Always drive up to an obstacle at a right angle. Drive over the obstacle with the front wheels and with the rear wheels in one move, do not stop half way. Observe the maximum obstacle height (see the technical data). Avoid shifting your centre of gravity during a journey, as well as jerky drive lever movements, and / or the undertaking of changes of direction. Only transport one person at a time. Observe the maximum load capacity. Bear in mind that the wheelchair accelerates or brakes when the driving mode is changed during a journey

14 Driving Before the First Journey Before the first journey you must familiarize yourself with the operation and all operating elements. ADVICE If available, use the restraint system (2-4-point belts) on every journey. Before every journey, make sure: that you can easily reach all operating elements that the battery is sufficiently charged for the journey. that the restraining belt functions correctly that the tyre pressure (of pneumatic tyres) is in order. Overcoming Obstacles The T4 can overcome obstacles of approx. 8 cm. ATTENTION! Risk of tipping over Never drive towards obstacles at an angle! Before driving over the obstacle set the backrest to the 90 position. Driving Up: Drive slowly towards the obstacle or the kerbstone at right angles. Shortly before the contact of the front wheels or the kerb climber increase speed and first reduce it after the rear wheels have also overcome the obstacle. Driving Down: Drive slowly towards the obstacle or the kerbstone at right angles. Before the contact of the front wheels with the obstacle, reduce speed and keep it so until the rear wheels have also overcome the obstacle

15 Inclines and Downhill Slopes The T4 has a maximum incline climbing capability of 8%. When climbing inclines the following warning advice should be followed without fail. ATTENTION! Risk of tipping over Drive downhill at 2/3 of the max. speed! When driving downhill avoid abrupt driving manoeuvers such hard braking or rapid acceleration! Before driving up inclines, set the backrest to the upright position and the seat tilt mechanism to horizontal! We recommend that before driving down inclines the backrest and the seat tilt mechanism (if present) should be inclined slightly backwards. When the lift (if present) is raised, the drive mode serves only for positioning and not for normal driving mode! Before driving uphill, lower the lift! Avoid driving uphill and downhill on smooth surfaces or where there is the risk of slipping (wet surfaces, black ice, etc.)! Avoid dismounting on inclines or downhill slopes! Drive the route in a straight line, do not zig-zag! Do not try to turn on inclines or downhill slopes! 34 Electrics Protection of the Drive Electronics The drive electronics of the wheelchair are equipped with overload protection. With a heavy load on the drive over a long period of time (for example, when driving up steep inclines) and above all with a high ambient temperature at the same time, the electronics can overheat. In this event the power of the vehicle is gradually throttled back until finally standstill is reached. The status indicator displays the corresponding blink code (see Chapter "Fault Codes and Diagnosis Codes" on page 8). By the switching off and on of the drive electronics, the fault code is cancelled and the electronics switch on again. It takes, however, some five minutes until the electronics have cooled down enough so that the drive supplies its full power again. If the drive is blocked due to an insurmountable obstacle such as, for example, a too high a kerbstone or similar and during his attempts to overcome the obstacle the driver allows the drive to operate against this resistance for more than 20 seconds the electronics switch off the drive in order to prevent damage. The status indicator displays the corresponding blink code (see Chapter "Fault Codes and Diagnosis Codes" on page 8). By the switching off and on of the drive electronics, the fault code is cancelled and the electronics switch on again

35 The Main Fuse The complete electrical equipment of the wheelchair is protected against overload by a main fuse. The main fuse is on the back behind the electronics cover. INFORMATION Before changing the main fuse, make sure that the drive electronics are switched off. Remove the knurled screws (). Remove the cover plate (2). Change the main fuse (3) Refit the cover plate (2) Fit and tighten the knurled screws ()

36 Batteries Interesting Facts about Gel Batteries The power supply of the vehicle is provided by two 2V gel batteries. The batteries are maintenance-free and must simply be charged regularly. New batteries should always be fully charged again before their first use. How quickly the batteries are discharged is dependent upon many factors such as ambient temperature, the condition of the driving surface, tyre pressure, weight of the driver, style of driving, use of lights, etc. INFORMATION New batteries first provide full power after they have been through approx charging cycles. Battery Charging Without fail pay attention to the operating instructions of the battery charger and to the advice on the front and rear sides of the battery charger! ATTENTION: Risk of explosion and / or destruction of the battery if the wrong battery charger is used! Use only the battery charger supplied with your vehicle by Degonda Rehab SA. Do not allow the electronic components to come into direct contact with water. Do not use high-pressure cleaners

42 Transport Loading the Wheelchair ATTENTION: Risk of tipping over if the wheelchair is loaded for transport together with the driver! If the wheelchair must be loaded together with the driver over ramps, the wheelchair must be secured against tipping over by a companion standing behind the wheelchair! Drive or push your electric wheelchair into the transport vehicle over suitable ramps. Securing the Wheelchair for Transport Make certain that before the transport the drive is engaged and the electronics are switched off. The Twist T4 complies with the requirements of the ISO Standard in respect of transport in vehicles. ATTENTION: Risk of personal injury! If you cannot securely anchor your electric wheelchair in a transport vehicle, it is recommended not to transport it in this vehicle!
