V. OPERATION 1. Controller The controller is a key component for your wheelchair. All electronics to operate the wheelchair are housed in this controller. The controller consists of the following parts: Speed Up Button Joystick On/Off Button Horn Button Speed Down Button Charger Socket The controller is usually housed on one of the armrests and connected to the batteries together with the motors. WARNING! If your wheelchair moves accidentally, please release the joystick immediately so that the wheelchair will stop moving automatically unless the joystick is out of order. 2. Buttons on Controller o On/Off Button The On/Off -Button controls the power to the controller electronics and motors through the latter. Don t use the On/Off-Button to stop the wheelchair unless some emergency occurs. o Joystick 8
The joystick is mainly used to control the speed and direction of the wheelchair. The further you push the joystick from its central position, the faster the wheelchair moves. Whenever you release the joystick, it will be automatically operative. WARNING! Make sure that the wheelchair is in drive mode before using it o o Horn Button The hooter will sound if you hit this button. Speed After powers on, the Speed Light will show the current maximum speed of your wheelchair. Each time the Speed Up Button (or Speed Down Button) is pressed, the number of cells will increase (or decrease) by one causing the unit to accelerate or decelerate. The user can adjust the maximum speed with these buttons. WARNING The wheelchair user must have the ability to drive or control the wheelchair safely. ADP Designs accepts no legal liability for losses of any kind arising from failure to comply Motor Lock Lever For your convenience, two motor lock levers are separately installed on the two mechanism boxes. When the levers are switched to manual mode, it allows the wheelchair to be manually maneuvered. When the levers are switched to drive mode, it will be driven by motors. Remember that the brake system is disengaged when the wheelchair is in manual mode. Do not use this wheelchair in manual mode unless you are receiving assistance. Do not set your wheelchair in manual mode by yourself while you are seated in it. This may result in personal injury Charger Socket This product has two charger socket: one on the rear of the controller and the other on the battery box. Either socket can be used to charge the batteries. These are only used to charge this wheelchair. Do not use the sockets to charge other electrical equipment, otherwise it may damage the wheelchair s control system and its E.M.C performance (Electromagnetic tolerance). 9
WARNING Only use the off-board charger supplied with your wheelchair to charge its batteries. Do not use other chargers to charge them, otherwise the damage, as a result, will invalidate your warranty 3. Batteries and their usage Battery The battery divided into two and each battery is on either side of the wheelchair and can be used individually. When one of the batteries is used up, you can replace it with another and continue to use the wheelchair. To receive maximum efficiency from your battery: o Fully charge your new battery prior to its initial use. This bring the battery up to 90% of its peak performance level. o Give the batteries another full charge of 6 to 8 hours before you operate your wheelchair again. The batteries will now perform over 90% of their potential. o After four or five consecutive charging cycles, the batteries will charge 100% and last for an extended period of time. 4. Charging Batteries The battery charger is an important part of the wheelchair. The off-board charger attached to this product can charge the batteries quickly and easily ton ensure you get the best out of your wheelchair. 1. Position your wheelchair near a wall socket 2. Be certain that the controller is powered off and that the wheelchair is in drive mode. 3. Connect the 3-pin output plug of the charger to the controller. 4. Connect the power plug of the charger to the wall socket. 5. The red LED on the charger lights up to indicate that charging is in progress. The green LED light indicates that the batteries are fully charged. 6. We recommend that you charge the batteries for 8 14 hours 10
7. Remove the charger s power plug from the electrical outlet, and the charger s output plug from the controller after the batteries have charged. Place the charger with its cables and plugs together into its bag under the seat. 8. Alternatively, the batteries can be charged separately from the wheelchair by removing the batteries from the wheelchair and charging them in the same way. 5. Overload protector The overload protector, which is located in the battery box, is set for the wheelchair s safety. Once motors or batteries overload, the overload protector will trip to cut off the power. After one or two minutes, it will automatically reset and then you can continue to drive the wheelchair. 7. Precautions for operation o Make sure that the control system has been reliably installed and the joystick is facing vertically upward. o Sit firmly, fasten your seatbelt, lean your upper body against the seatback. o After turning the wheelchair on, check whether the current maximum speed is suitable for you. If not, adjust the speed. It is recommended that you start at a slower speed and increase it gradually. o If the wheelchair moves in an unexpected direction, release the joystick immediately and the chair will stop. o Keep your feet on the footrest; don t extend them out when the wheelchair is in motion. o Don t extend your arms out from the armrests while driving o Ensure that the wheelchair is not in manual mode before you use it. A. Hazards Do not drive the wheelchair in the following cases: o Beyond restrictions indicated in this user manual. For example, the maximum user weight of 100kg, the maximum incline of 6 degrees, high obstacles etc. o On surfaces that could make the tires lose their grip, such as surfaces with ice, snow, oil, gravel, grass etc. o Malfunctions of the controller, brakes, electronics, mechanisms etc. 11
V. MAINTENANCE Like other motorized vehicles, your power wheelchair also requires routine maintenance. Some checks you can perform yourself, but others require our assistance. Preventative maintenance is very important. If you follow the maintenance and checks in this section, this wheelchair will give you years of trouble-free operation. If you have and doubt about the wheelchair s care or operation, please contact us. Humidity Your wheelchair, like most electrical and mechanical equipment, is susceptible to external conditions. The wheelchair should avoid damp environments. Direct or prolonged exposure to water or dampness could cause the wheelchair to malfunction electronically and mechanically. Water can cause electrical component and the frame of the chair to corrode. Temperature Some parts of your wheelchair are susceptible to temperature In extremely cold temperatures (30*C below zero) some electronics will be affected or malfunction. Temperatures above (50*C) may cause your wheelchair s speed to reduce. General Guidelines Avoid physical impact on the controller Avoid prolonged exposure of your wheelchair to extreme conditions, such as hot, cold, or moist environments Keep the controller clean Check all electronic connections, including the cable and connectors of the charger, and ensure that they are all tight and secure. The surface of the frame has been sprayed with a clear sealant coat. You can apply a light coat of car wax to maintain its glossy appearance. All wheels are already lubricated and sealed Maintenance after use Turn off the power (It is best to disconnect all the connectors) Inhibit children from tampering with the wheelchair Store the wheelchair in normal temperature to prevent reformation so that it keeps its performance for a long period of time. Clean the wheelchair with a clear and soft cloth. Never use any chemicals to clean it (to prevent reformation and discoloration) Remove the cloth cover of the seatback to be washed if it is dirty 12
