Safety regulations 1. Safety regulations Apart from complying with the information in the operating instructions, the general safety and accident prevention regulations of the legislator must also be taken into consideration, e.g. VBG 1 and VBG 12. Read the operating instructions, even if you have already worked with similar sweeping vacuum machines. It is absolutely essential that you familiarize yourself with all the equipment and operating elements and their functions before starting the machine. There is no time to do this while you are working. - Sweeping vacuum machines must only be operated by persons who have received operator training, who have satisfied their employer or employer s representative that they have the required operator skills, and who have been given express permission by the employer to operate the machines. - The sweeping vacuum machine may only be used in those areas authorized by the employer or his representative. - The machine must not be driven on public highways. On sloping surfaces the angle of inclination at the side and in the direction of travel must not exceed 18%. - Never leave the machine unattended while the key is in the ignition. - The operator may only leave the machine when the motors have come to a standstill, when the machine has been secured so that it cannot move unintentionally and when the parking brake has been activated and the key removed. - The key must be removed to prevent unauthorized use of the machine. - The machine must be secured by means of impact points and load-securing straps or ropes during transportation by vehicle. - It is not permitted to carry passengers. 17

Safety regulations - The operator must use the machine as stipulated. The operator must drive in accordance with local conditions and must be alert to the public, especially children, when operating the machine. - The machine must not constitute a danger. - The warning and information signs located on the machine provide important information regarding the safe operation of the machine. - Care must be taken when refuelling that no gasoline falls onto the surface. - Before start up, check that the machine and the operating equipment are in working order and that they are safe to operate. The machine must not be used if it is not in working order. - The attached devices may only be set in motion from the seated position. - The machine must only be used with non-hazardous category U dust. - The machine is not protected against rain or dripping water. - Do not open the cowling while the motor is running. - Proper maintenance of the machine plays an important role in the prevention of accidents. - The key must be removed before cleaning or servicing the machine and before replacing parts. - Appropriate tools must be used when carrying out maintenance, repair and installation work, etc. - Always remove the battery plug or disconnect the battery (negative pole) before working on the electrical equipment. - Never sweep up burning or glowing objects. 18

Safety regulations Special notes Spare parts Please note that using other than Kärcher spare parts may lead to severe damage and serious accidents if these parts have not been correctly manufactured, if they do not replace the original part exactly or if they make the machine unsafe to use. Please always use Kärcher spare parts. Accessories Incorrect, unsuitable or defective accessories impair the function of the machine. Their use is dangerous. Please only use Kärcher accessories. Battery The battery is filled and charged and service free. Used batteries must be disposed of in an environment-friendly manner in accordance with EC guidelines 91/157 EEC. Guarantee In each country the terms of guarantee are those issued by the company responsible. We repair any defects which occur during the guarantee period free of charge, provided they can be shown to have been caused by material or manufacturing faults. In the event of a guarantee claim, please contact your dealer or the nearest authorized customer service office and please provide your invoice. 19

Operation 2. Operation Important: Please first try driving the sweeper in an unobstructed area until you have become really familiar with the various operating elements and their functions. In the instructions that follow, directions (right, left, front and rear) are always as seen from the driver s seat. 2.1 Before starting work - Check the engine oil level (if necessary refill to max). - Check that you have sufficient fuel. - Empty the dirt container (if necessary). - Shake or replace the panel filter (if necessary). Open the fuel cock: - With the hood open, unscrew the rear hand screw and release the hood fastening. - Lift the hood slightly and push it out a little to the left. - Open the fuel cock. Important: Close the fuel cock when not using the machine for a long period. 2.2 Starting the engine - Raise the main sweeping brush and side brushes. - Apply the hand brake. - Set the gas lever to running speed (it locks in place). - Pull the choke lever to the rear (only if the engine is cold). - Turn the ignition key in the starter switch to the right and hold it there until the engine starts. - Release the choke lever as soon as the engine runs smoothly. 20

Operation 2.3 Sweeping without suction cleaning This is recommended when the floor or pavement is damp or wet. - Lower the side brushes. - Lower the sweeping brush (lever position 1, filter flap closed). - Move the gas lever to bring the engine to running speed (it locks in place). - Press the drive pedal down gently for movement in the required direction. Press to the front - forwards Press to the rear - reverse - Open the coarse dirt flap by pressing the pedal whenever any bulky material has to be picked up. - Check the dirt container regularly and empty it as necessary. When driving over door sills and similar obstructions, it is necessary to raise the coarse-dirt flap or to raise the sweeping brush as the coarse-dirt flap could otherwise be damaged. 2.4 Sweeping with suction cleaning This is recommended when the floor or pavement is dry. - Lower the side brushes. - Lower the sweeping brush (lever position 2, filter flap open). - Subsequent operations as under Point Actuate the filter-cleaning lever depending on how dusty it is (first switch off the engine). The speed at which the engine runs also determines the speed at which the brush drum rotates and the speed at which the sweeper travels. If there is a lot of dust to be swept up, the engine speed and rate of travel should be reduced so as not to swirl up too much dust. 21

Operation 2.5 Suction with the suction hose (Accessory) - Close the filter flap (lever position 3 or 1). - Set the engine to maximum speed by means of the gas lever. - Take the suction hose out of its holder and perform the required cleaning operation. 2.6 Travel without sweeping - Raise the side brush. - Raise the sweeping brush (lever position 3). If it is necessary to drive up a steep gradient it is better not to press the drive pedal right down. The sweeper will then move more slowly but be better able to climb the gradient. 2.7 Stopping and parking - Release the drive pedal. This will automatically brake the sweeper and bring it to a stop. - Move the gas lever to bring the engine to its lowest speed. - Apply the hand brake. - Stop the engine and remove the ignition key. The side brush and the sweeping brush should always be raised before the sweeper is put out of use. 2.8 Pushing the sweeper If it is required to move the sweeper without using its engine, then the free-wheel lever on the hydrodynamic converter should be locked in. After the sweeper has been moved, the lever should be released again as otherwise it will not be possible to drive the sweeper. 22

Care and maintenance 3. Care and maintenance Servicing operations daily every 8 operating hours weekly every 25 operating hours monthly every 40 operating hours half yearly every 100 operating hours yearly every 500 operating hours Engine Check engine oil level (refill to max) Change oil* Clean air pre-filter Check filter cartridge Cooling system, clean cooling ribs Change fuel filter Change spark plug Check converter oil level (between the max and min marks) Check condition of seal strips Check panel filter elements Check V-belts Check chain Check bowden cables Check brake linings/adjust brake Check tyres and tyre pressures Check sweeping brush and side brushes Lubricate moving parts and tie rods Check condition of exhaust Clean filter Empty dirt container * The engine oil should be changed after the first 8 operating hours! ** Also several times while sweeping, depending on the amount of dust in the air. 23

Maintenance operations 4. Maintenance operations 4.1 Replacing the sweeping brush - Stop the engine. - Raise the sweeping brush by means of the hand lever and lock the lever in position. - Unscrew and remove the left-hand side cover. - Unscrew the hand nut on the brush axle, remove the linkage for raising the brush. - Unscrew the three hand screws that hold the brushdrum cover and swing the brush shaft as far as the stop, out of the working region. - Remove the brush-drum cover together with the drive axle. - Pull the brush out to the side. How the brush should appear viewed from the front of the sweeper When inserting the new brush, it should be ensured that its nose engages in the recess in the right-hand drive element. Be sure to install the new brush the right way round (with the Vee arrangement of the bristles as shown below). 4.2 Replacing the side brushes - Stop the engine. - Raise the side brush(es) by means of the hand lever. - Loosen and unscrew the hand nut beneath the brush. - Remove the drive washer and the side brush. When fitting back the drive washer, it should be ensured that its lugs engage in the holes in the gear flange. 4.3 Replacing the sealing strips For it to be possible to maintain the specified vacuum in the brush compartment, and thus for the sweeper to work without raising dust, it is essential for the sealing strips to be in sound condition. Damaged strips should be replaced immediately. The sealing strips at the sides should just reach to the floor and touch lightly against it while the strips at the front and rear have to be so positioned that they bend over to the rear (they should be set about 5 mm deeper than the side strips). 24

Maintenance operations - Stop the engine. - Remove the side covers. - Unscrew the fastening screws and remove the sealing strips. - Fit new sealing strips and adjust their depth. - Tighten the fastening screws. 4.4 Replacing the sealing-brush strips - Stop the engine. - Unscrew the clamping screws and remove the brush strips. - Insert the new strips and so adjust them that they rest evenly against and seal the dirt container. - Tighten the clamping screws. The sealing strip that provides the seal between the dirt container and the frame should be checked at least once every 40 operating hours. If the strip is damaged it should be replaced immediately. 4.5 Replacing the panel filter The purpose of the panel filter is to retain the dust that is raised by the rotating brush. If the sweeper ceases to clean effectively or if dust escapes around the sweeper while sweeping, then the filter elements must be replaced (see und Servicing operations ). Defective filter elements must be replaced immediately. - Stop the engine. - Open the cover and hood. - Unscrew the two hand screws, take out the frame and remove the filter elements. - Insert new filter elements, put back the frame and tighten the two hand screws. It is important that the frame is seated correctly against the edges of the filter elements. 4.6 Check/replace engine air filter - Release the hood and push it to the left as described under Unscrew the hand screws that secure the air filter cover. - Check the condition of the air filter (pre-filter and filter cartridge) and clean or replace if necessary. 25
