1 WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED VEHICLE OF THE MONTH WESSEX WAYS MAY 2017 The Citroën 2CV was introduced at the Paris Salon in 1948 and production continued until It was designed and a pilot run of 250 cars was made in 1939, but the war curtailed any further progress. The design brief was for a vehicle that would be capable of carrying 4 people and a quantity of farm goods over unpaved roads at a modest speed (30mph) at low cost. It was effectively the up-to-date Frenchman s horse and cart. The 2CV was always powered by a twin cylinder air cooled engine driving the front wheels through a 4-speed gearbox and dashboard mounted gear lever. The first model with a 375cc engine allowed a maximum speed of 40mph, but by the end of production the 602cc engine was capable of about 70mph! A variety of utility models were made, and even a twin engine, fourwheel drive Sahara model was available in the late 1960 s and early 1970 s. Pre-war prototype. 2cv van. 2cv 4-wheel drive. Page 1.

2 CHAIRMAN S CHATTER Hi Everyone, I realise that I always start more or less the same way and this time is no exception, but this is a genuine thank you from last month s speaker Bill Chorley who was blown away by his reception and the interest shown in what was obviously his favoured subject; I must admit that I was amazed by his knowledge and how he could remember every detail and date. He did say that he could take us through to the end of the war during another talk if we would like, so I will pop round to you all and see what you think about having Bill back again. Tonight I would like to welcome Bruce to the club for an insight into life in the Household Cavalry. Some breaking news from the committee is that if enough of you want it then we would love to arrange a Club Show. As long as enough of you would be able to help out along the way and also on the day, we feel that to try to do it this year would not be practical, so it would be next year as a lot of planning would be required; so more of that in the future. As you are all aware, the hardest thing with running any club or organisation like ours is to find anyone to take on a job that requires a bit of time and effort. Now this Club is lucky in the fact that we have some of those on board. Most of us who do this can normally sort out their said tasks at a committee meeting, but there is one person who cannot do that and that person is the guy who puts the Wessex Ways together, the Newsletter Editor. This month s issue has an article written by club member John Shearing: now I have been lucky enough to read this before it was published and I would like to thank John for putting this article together. I would also like to think that there must be lots of you members who could put pen to paper and come up with something along the same lines, so do come on and get writing or get out your laptop and send in something to the editor. As for me, well I may find the time to contribute something in the future, meanwhile please think what a thankless task it must be to put together the Wessex Ways without any feedback whatsoever. MEMBERS CLASSICS WANTED This is a plea almost on bended knee, but not quite, for all of you who do not normally come to club nights at Cobhams on a Tuesday to bring your Classic Car or Motorbike along next month on June 13th for the annual Cars And Bikes In The Field. We have got the main man from Charterhouse Auctions coming along to do the judging and to give out prizes, SO PLEASE MAKE THE EFFORT. VALUATIONS Don't forget that as well as the vehicles having the chance to be valued next month there will also be on hand George Holtby, an auctioneer who has great knowledge of all things antique and retro; so bring along your bits and bobs to see if you are sitting on a fortune you never knew you had! I think we will call the night THE WESSEX VEHICLE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW! Doug TERRY KINGSTON Terry Kingston sadly passed away on Sunday 30 th April. 4 STORAGE PROBLEMS FOR YOUR CLASSICS? One of our club members, just back from a trip to Germany and Holland, spotted an unusual roundabout at a small town called Penningen in Holland. He wondered if this is the Dutch approach to solving classic car storage problems, as although the vehicles had clearly been there for some time, none of them had been damaged or vandalised! Perhaps the WVPC could adopt a local roundabout for a similar purpose, but would they remain unmolested one wonders? As a matter of interest, can anyone identify the vehicles other than the old Peugeot saloon, the Fiat icecream van and the Austin-Healey/MG? Page 4.

5 BLACKMORE VALE NOSTAGIC REVIVAL 1 st July PUBLICITY ANNOUNCEMENT The very successful Blackmore Vale Nostalgic Revival will this year be held on Saturday 1 July 2017 at Henstridge Airfield in Somerset. Last year this exciting event helped raise over 5000 for CliC Sargent, Future Roots and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance plus many other local charities. This year we are again raising funds for CliC Sargent and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance plus this year we are including the Youth Cancer Trust along again with many more local charities and good causes. Last year we had over 2000 people attend on the day - this year we are sure that even more people will come along. We are again expecting over 250 classic and vintage cars and a number of vintage commercial and military vehicles to take part in the event. To get a taste for some of the vehicles that have already registered and to register your own vehicle, go to In addition to an impressive line-up of vehicles we have plenty of other entertainment There will be an army Wildcat flying in for close inspection and we are extremely excited to have a fly past of one of the last remaining WW2 Lancaster Bombers. The event is growing year on year so 2017 promises to be even bigger with more trade stalls, more vehicles, more entertainment including a pipe band, a silver band and Steve Borough s Circus Skills. LYMINGTON CAR SHOW Sunday August 6 th EARLY WARNING This year the organisers have decided to limit the number of entries to 240 vehicles, on a first come first served basis, so early booking of places for any pre-1987 ( D registered or earlier) cars is recommended. Only pre-booked entries will be admitted on the day. All those who went last year will automatically be sent a registration form. For downloading a form, please go to the web site at This website will also show the number of remaining spaces available on a regular basis. A club stand for WVPC cars will be organised by the committee, but individual entries will need to be made.
