2 INTERURBAN traffic solutions CAPACITY MANAGEMENT Ramp Metering Ramp metering installations harmonize the traffic on the main lane of the motorway. They reduce the flow of vehicles entering the motorway by breaking up the groups of cars and thus ensuring that the traffic can merge more easily. Right now, approximately 100 SWARCO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS ramp metering installations are in operation in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. Benefits: Reduction of accidents by up to 40 % Reduction of congestions by up to 50 % Increase of traveling speed by up to 15 km/h Increase of traffic volumes by up to 10 % at peak times Reference project: Ramp Metering in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse Temporary use of hard shoulder During busy periods the hard shoulder is used as an additional running lane. The constant monitoring, the special signage and variable speed limit allow for a high safety standard. With an adequate road design provided, the use of the hard shoulder proves to be a quick (interim) method to increase the capacity and decrease journey times. The network wide management of traffic flows optimally uses the capacity of the whole motorway network. The signs used are dynamic and programmable, informing the road users about alternative routes and congestions. It collects and processes the data of different sensors and data sources from different areas. The scope of delivery includes an extensive data management with collection, archiving and multiple possibilities of evaluation as well as a graphical user interface (GUI) with consistent operating concept and Look & Feel which can be adapted to customer requirements. The internationalized user interface (language, text orientation, GUI design) can be localized in every language representable in Unicode, the language can be switched during operation. The outstation PRIMOS TDA is mainly used for traffic data acquisition with count stations on interruban roads and motorways. The outstations PRIMOS MODULAR and Primos universal are multifunctional. They are used for the acquisition of traffic data, axle loads and environmental data, for the control of variable message signs, in ramp metering systems as well as for traffic control in the course of road tunnels. 5 Detect and display dynamic evaluation & display of parking spaces for heavy goods vehicles The deficit of designated parking spaces for heavy goods vehicles at motorway rest areas, service stations and off-motorway rest areas often has fatal consequences. The accident statistics show that a significant number of accidents on motorways is caused by overtired truck drivers and the number of accidents at service stations due to blocked access roads increases. Besides newly constructing and extending rest and service areas, the existing parking spaces must be managed in such way that it can be efficiently utilized. At the same time, the drivers must be able to plan their compulsory breaks and to find parking space without tedious searching. A reliable detection ensures that the displays are trustworthy. Safety fences protect the area beside the road and thus force the animals to only cross the road at defined spots. At these spots, detection areas with sensors at both sides of the road are installed. The sensors detect the animals when they approach. When animals are detected, warning signs placed in sufficient distance show the warning "deer pass" and a speed reduction. The road user is warned and has enough time to slow down or to avoid a collision, if nessecary. Additionally, the sensors can be adjusted in such way that only animals of a certain size are detected. This is done in order to avoid that the system already reacts to smaller animals and thus the attention of the road users wears off because the situation is considered to be nonhazardous. The display of the variable message signs in LED-technology (compliant to EN and certified) can optionally be adjusted to be static or blinking. Deer pass systems raise road safety and actively make a contribution to protect nature: Habitats fragmented by roads are reunited and the genetic exchange of the wildlife is assured. This information is used e.g. for network wide rerouting and statistical means. In remote locations these count stations are typically solar powered.
