1 TASSAFARONGA November 1942 Background: The last surface action off Guadalcanal was sparked by a Japanese resupply mission. As the Americans increasingly dominated the waters around the island, the Japanese were reduced to using destroyers to run supplies and reinforcements down the Slot. While these could carry only a small payload, they were fast enough to dash to and away from the island under cover of night. On November 30, a USN force was positioned to intercept one of these runs. Forces: United States Navy Division 1: Fletcher (Fletcher - flag) Rear Admiral Carelton Perkins (Mahan) Wright Maury (Gridley) Drayton (Mahan) Division 2 Minneapolis (New Orleans - flag) New Orleans (New Orleans) Pensacola (Pensacola) Honolulu (Brooklyn) Northampton (Northampton) Division 3 Lamson (Mahan - flag) Lardner (Bristol) Nihon Kaigun Independent Ship: Takanami (Yugumo) Rear Admiral Tanaka Raizo Division 1: Naganami (Yugumo - flag) Division 2: Makinami (Yugumo - flag) Oyashio (Kagero) Kuroshio (Kagero) Kagero (Kagero) Division 3: Kawakaze (Shiratsuyu) Suzukaze (Shiratsuyu) Set-up: N^ The battle area is restricted. There is land on the south edge of the area, 28 inches from the north edge, extending due west for 12 inches from the east edge. The land line then extends from this point northwest at a 45 degree angle for 24 inches, then southwest along the 225 degree line. This is the coast of Guadalcanal. A 4 inch circle of land is centered on a point 19 inches from the east edge and 6 inches from the north edge. This is Savo Island. The American friendly edge is the east edge. The Japanese friendly edge is the west edge. The American formation is complicated by being caught in mid-maneuver. The cruiser line had been on a course of 300 degrees, but had then executed a 30 degree ships left. Its course at the start of the scenario is 270 degrees (due west). The two destroyer divisions are also on a 270 degree course. Division 1 is north of the cruisers and Division 3 is south of it. Both divisions are disposed so that a ships right 30 degrees by the cruisers and a column right 30 by each destroyer division would put all ships in one continuous line on a 300 degree course. To set up the USN ships place them in a continuous line on a course of 300 degrees with the divisions in order and the Fletcher 13 inches from the north edge and 11 inches from the east edge. Next rotate each cruiser 30 degrees around its bow so that it is on a course of 270 degrees. Then do the same for each the Fletcher and the Lamson. Finally, line the other ships of the destroyer divisions up directly behind their flagships. The Japanese Division 1 begins on a course of 150 degrees in line ahead, 11 inches from the north edge and 22 inches from the east edge. The other divisions are directly behind it, in order. Takanami is 2 inches to the east of main formation, even with Naganami. Victory Conditions: Victory is decided on points: a) 2 per cruiser sunk; b) 1 per destroyer sunk; c) 1 point per cruiser left DIW. Special Rules.
2 1. All USN ships but the Maury, Drayton, Lamson, Lardner and Pensacola have SG radar. The named ships have SC radar. All USN ships with SC radars have Mk 3 or Mk 4 fire control radars. All others have Mk 8 or Mk 12 fire control radars. 2. Because the USN ships are a scratch team that had not exercised together, they must plot their division movement one turn in advance. 3. The Japanese are alert. 4. Only the Takanami and Naganami are carrying torpedo reloads. 5. Once the action begins, Takanami is subject to independent movement unless and until she joins with Naganami. 6. The visual sighting base is 3, with a visibility state of the quarter moon is below the horizon. 7. Savo Island blocks both radar and visual spotting attempts. Outcome: Once again American gunfire was matched with Japanese torpedoes. This time the torpedoes won. The Japanese torpedoed four out of five cruisers, Northampton sinking the next day and the others being saved. The Americans sank Takanami.
