16 How to get the most out of your re-siding project. As with any remodeling project, knowledge is king. You don t have to spend countless hours doing homework, though. With a few of these tips and important questions to ask your prospective siding contractor, you ll be sure to make the wisest decision and have the most beautiful results. Tips for a successful contractor meeting: Prepare a complete description of the project and your expectations. Give each contractor the same information so you will be able to properly compare their proposals. Three proposals are recommended. Ensure your contractor has a proven track record. You don t want your home to be a learning experience. Also, specific experience in James Hardie siding is a must. Check out your contractor with your local Consumer Affairs Office or Better Business Bureau. Contractors affiliated with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI ) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB ) tend to be more established. 17 Evaluating the Proposal Make sure that each proposal includes everything you requested, that the price is based on the complete project and covers all terms and conditions. Also, note any difference in material type that the contractor may be basing costs on. Don t just consider price. Consider value a combination of factors including solid credentials, attention to detail, provisions for maintaining tidiness of the work site and disposal of old materials. To ensure a complete exterior solution, make sure to learn about all the materials you re getting, including the trim and soffit panels. This way, you can enjoy a single maintenance cycle and a cohesive look. Carefully read the contractor s workmanship warranty policy. Expect a separate contract and read it paying close attention to how it aligns with the proposal and making sure the payment schedule works for you. For your peace of mind, consider asking the contractor to include a holdback clause which allows you to withhold a portion of the money owed (usually around 10%) to allow for a thorough inspection of the job.
