15 Natural gas has an excellent safety record, but like all forms of energy, it must be handled properly. It is important for everyone to be familiar with the characteristics of natural gas and be prepared to react properly to ensure your safety and the safety of others. What To Do If You Suspect a Natural Gas Leak 1 Move to a safe location. 2 Call 911 and Iroquois Gas Control at Do not strike a match; use telephones; operate engines and motors; or switch on/off appliances, lights, or even a flashlight in the area where you smell gas. These items can produce sparks that might ignite the gas and cause an explosion. How To Detect a Natural Gas Leak Smell Unodorized Natural Gas 30"diameter pipeline, North of Wright, NY the gas on Iroquois system is unodorized. Odorized Natural Gas 24"diameter pipeline, South of Wright, NY the gas on Iroquois system is odorized. Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas. Some pipelines are odorized with a smell similar to rotten eggs to aid in detection of a leak. Iroquois has both odorized and unodorized pipeline segments. See box at left. Sight A natural gas leak can be seen as a dust cloud, mist, fog, bubbles in standing water, or vegetation that appears to be dead or dying for no apparent reason.
