3 VISION DEVELOPED LUTZ W. LESTER Managing Director Driven by innovation Our origin The time of glorious days for real new inventions in the area of internal combustion engines seems to be long gone. Engines become more and more efficient and offer many variations. Enthusiastic innovative genius coupled with an open mind made us to rethink mature technology. The principle of the twin crankshaft concept has received a name NEANDER. Before the change of the millennium our passions for engines has only been applied to two-wheelers. Our intention was to put the incredible torque of a turbo diesel engine on the road. Our vision was a unique motorcycle with a powerful 100 HP turbo diesel engine. In 2003 this vision found a home through the foundation of NEANDER Motorfahrzeuge GmbH which has been transformed 2006 into NEANDER Motors AG. Merely three years later 2009 the ingenuity of the idea had been recognized e.g. by the Schmidt-Römhild Technology-Award presented by the Ministry of Science, Economy and Traffic of Schleswig- Holstein, Germany.

5 VISION LIVED We grow with our success. Thus the idea of using the NEANDER technology for marine came into vision. The realization of this thought took place quickly in the same year in 2009 NEANDER Shark GmbH was founded as a 100% subsidiary of the NEANDER Motors AG. Ever since NEANDER Shark has vigorously implemented the unique concept in the marine world. Outstanding engineers and engine experts joined the NEANDER project soon. Lutz W. Lester s talent of generating enthusiasm caused innovators to accept the challenge and support NEANDER. Those came with the experience from companies like Porsche, Mercury Marine, Mahle and MuZ Motorcycle. With their know-how and energy it was made possible to explore the unknown path. The aim: The worldwide first turbo diesel outboard engine from the idea to series production.

Besides the priority of safety on board, efficiency and economical aspects are most important. A fisherman expects reliable performance and efficiency during his day-to-day business. Stable performance is fundamentally required in case of emergency for police and military forces as well as for the use of tender boats of cruise liners and container ships. Thus the usage of diesel assures ideal logistics and great reliability during operation particularly on boats made for outboards! In addition the inflammability of diesel is by far much less than of gasoline which, regarding the fuel storage on board, offers a great benefit for safety and expense. As no high voltage ignition system is used on a diesel engine the NEANDER Shark is useful particular in areas which are critical in respect to flammability, like oilfields. 17 TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION CLAUS BRÜSTLE Managing Director Today s marine engine market is divided into two major segments, commercial and recreational use of propulsion systems. At present no diesel outboard exists in the market segment of 30 to 52 kw (40 to 70 HP), a segment interesting for commercial use and which is defined by transport, hauling, commercial fishing and others. In the smaller engine segments with power below 75 kw (100 HP) gasoline engine technology is the dominant and sole available power. Due to their favorable compactness, ease of installation, serviceability, weight and also cost outboard engines govern the market. The diesel torque to weight ratio, beneficial specific fuel consumption and the tax-free diesel fuel for commercial applications make diesel engines extremely attractive. Also other typical outboard engine applications like rescue boats on larger ships are much more comfortable and more economical with a diesel outboard. There is another outstanding advantage: No need to maintain dual fuel storage capacity onboard with all aspects of safety and logistics.

The patented NEANDER Shark twin crankshaft design eliminates mass forces using the 2 counter rotating crankshafts. On top this design provides a role torque free operation of the engine on the transom. This leads to a smooth running behavior which is beside the NEANDER engine only achieved by multiple cylinder diesel engines!

21 TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION The key enabler for a dual crankshaft engine with a constrained piston movement by two con-rods with theoretically no piston side forces is provision for forgiveness towards tolerances. These can lead to off-design positions of the piston in its cylinder bore and unfavorable mechanical effects like scuffing, sticking or simply higher friction as the least bad of effects. Inventing and introducing a so-called space ball design resolved the problem, giving the piston the additional degree of freedom of rotational adjustment around the two piston pins. Spaceball mm The cylinder block of the engine is an Aluminum design, closed deck with dry cast iron cylinder sleeves pressed in for robustness and simple serviceability. The cylinder head, block and bedplate are joined by so called long bolts, which reach from the head into the bedplate main bearing saddles. This design allows the structural aluminum parts to be under compressive stress only, which is favorable for the durability of all structural components. For vibrational rupture protection, dampening, the bolt holes are connected via calibrated oil holes into the main oil gallery.
