4 Guidelines and Rules for Submitting JSAE Transaction with your manuscript Rules for Submitting JSAE Transaction Issued April 1, 1972 Revised July 1, 1980 Revised February 10, 1987 Revised February 16, 1988 Revised May 19, 1992 Revised May 26, 1994 Revised September 24, 1996 Revised October 27, 1998 Revised October 31, The submission of papers to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc (hereinafter called JSAE) shall be done as prescribed in these rules 2 Authors who wish to submit their papers for publication in the Transactions of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc may submit the originals (hereinafter called manuscripts) to JSAE whether or not they are JSAE members (although undergraduate students are not eligible) 3 If a submitted manuscript is accepted as a paper, it will be published in the JSAE Transactions 4 In addition to papers, materials may be submitted to the JSAE Transactions 41 Papers are classified as either research papers or technical papers, and they must satisfy the applicable requirements below 411 Research papers (1) Papers shall contain original knowledge (Originality) (2) Papers shall contain no obvious errors (Reliability) (3) Both the writing and the content shall be coherent (Completeness) (4) Papers shall be of value for automotive engineering (Usefulness) 412 Technical papers (1) Papers shall contain original knowledge (Originality) (2) Papers shall contain no obvious errors (Reliability) (3) Both the writing and the content shall be coherent (Completeness) (4) Papers shall be of value to the automotive industry (Usefulness) 42 Materials shall be of high value as engineering or industrial materials, even if they lack originality 5 Manuscripts must conform to the conditions below 51 Manuscripts shall be written in either Japanese or English in accordance with the Guidelines for Writing JSAE Papers 52 Papers shall not have been submitted to other generally published publications In this case, "published" means "sold or distributed," and "publications" means "all publications, in either Japanese or a European language" However, papers fitting the descriptions below shall be regarded as unsubmitted (1) Papers published in the proceedings or the like issued for meetings of which JSAE is a sponsor or co-sponsor (2) Papers for which preliminary abstracts have been submitted to publications issued by the organizations with which the authors' are affiliated (Note that when the author submits the manuscript, the publication or the applicable portion of it shall be attached as reference material) 53 Materials shall conform to the conditions same as those for papers 6 The date the manuscript arrives at JSAE shall be deemed to be the date of receipt For papers where the author is requested to explain the content in detail, shorten it, or so on, if the author's reply and the manuscript are not returned within two months from the day the request was made by JSAE, the initial date of receipt shall be deemed invalid For a paper that is treated as material by the decision of the JSAE Transactions Editorial Committee, even though it was submitted as a paper, the date of receipt for its submission as a paper shall remain valid 4

5 7 The JSAE Transactions Editorial Committee shall determine whether or not a manuscript is published as a paper based on the opinions of the Committee members who review it, and shall determine the classification of the paper based on the author's declaration and the opinions of the Committee members who review it The manuscripts the Editorial Committee decides not accepted for publication will be returned to the authors along with the reasons why they are not accepted The author may, if she or he has an objection to the decision, submit the objection in writing to the Editorial Committee 8 The authors of papers that are accepted for publication are sometimes requested by the Editorial Committee to revise their papers, so they shall obey such instructions While a paper is being revised, its place in the JSAE Transactions is reserved 9 The authors shall bear the responsibility for the contents of published papers or the like 10 The prescribed number of pages for a single paper and the like shall be as follows: Paper: No more than 6 pages Material: No more than 4 pages However, these limits may be exceeded by up to 2 pages if the JSAE Transactions Editorial Committee recognizes the additional pages as necessary 11 If a submitted manuscript is accepted for publication, the author shall pay a publication fee of 42,000 yen for one manuscript submitted (including the fee for 50 copies of the extract) However, where none of the authors is an individual member of JSAE, the fee shall be 63,000 yen for one manuscript submitted Note that where the number of pages exceeds the number prescribed in paragraph 11 above, or where more than 50 copies of the extract are printed, a separately determined fee shall be paid 12 Copyrights The copyrights for writings published in the JSAE Transactions shall belong to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc (JSAE Copyright Rules) Supplementary provisions 1These rules were determined in accordance with the Editorial Board Organizational Work Processing Standards, Article 11, (1) 2These rules are effective as of November 1,

6 Current page number / Total number of pages 1/6 Top margin: 25 mm, Interval between left and right columns: 8 mm A Fundamental Study of Combustion Control of a Spark Ignition Engine with Electric Fields(Second Report) * Taro Jidosha 1) Sojyuro Kuruma 2) Insert 1 blank line Left margin: 18 mm The purpose of this work is to study the feasibility of flame propagation control of mixtures in a closed vessel by applying electric fields Hydrogen-air,methane-air and propane-air mixture were used DC and AC electric fields were applied For both types of electric fields, the results showed that the application of electric fields remarkably shortened the burning period of each mixture, especially in lean or rich condition Under these mixture conditions, the following two patterns were showed, 1)large increase of initial flame- kernel growth, and 2)large increase of flame-surfaces by changing into wrinkle-flames Key Words: Spark Ignition Engine, Combustion Control / Flame, Lean Burn Engine, Electric Field 3 Right margin: 18 mm Indent 1 space 1 Introduction It has been known for some time that when a direct current electrical field is applied to a pre-mixture of hydrocarbon fuels or to a diffuse flame, the flame will incline toward the negative electrode This suggests that the existence of charged particles such as electrons and many types of positive and negative ions among the neutral molecules that constitute the greater part of the combustion products alters the flow or concentration of the neutral molecules under the influence of the electrical field This knowledge arouses the curiosity of researchers about the extent to which the electric field influences the reactions of ignition and combustion, particularly the combustion speed as an eigenvalue, but no consensus has been reached to date The reason for this is thought to be that the conclusions of researchers differ according to the differences in the experimental techniques they employ, including the fuels, the equivalence ratios, the methods of impressing the electrical field, the types and intensities of the electrical fields, and the combustion methods (1 3) However, because it is a fact that the electrical field easily affects the flame, the authors have conducted basic research into the phenomenon out of their interest in potential engineering applications (4 7) The purpose of the research reported here was to study the feasibility of using the electrical properties of the flame as a technique to control combustion in a spark ignition engine, particularly to improve the combustion of a lean fuel-air mixture * Received April 15, 2006 Presented at the JSAE Annual Congress on May 19, ) 2) The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering (Hongo 7-3-1, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, ) ( taro@jsaeorjp) If you think no problem 2 Test Apparatus and Method Two types of combustion vessels were used, one for a static fuel-air mixture and one for a flowing fuel-air mixture The former vessel is shown in Fig 1 It is a cylindrical vessel made of duralumin, with an inside diameter of 60 mm, a wall thickness of 32 mm, and an internal volume of 90 cm3 Both sides of the vessel are fitted with a flowing fuel-air mixture The former vessel is shown in Fig 1 It is a cylindrical vessel made of duralumin, with an inside diameter of 60 mm, a wall thickness of 32 mm, and an internal volume of 90 cm Note: Company limited is abbreviated to Co Ltd Bottom margin: 25 mm 6

7 Attachment Guidelines for Selecting JSAE Standard keywords In order to promote the distribution of information and to make information searching more efficient, the author, who has detailed knowledge of the content of the paper, shall follow the procedure described below to select the keywords that he thinks are necessary (As a rule, the keywords are to be American English given priority) 1 Selecting standard keywords The author should select standard keywords that allow the reader to infer the content of the paper as a whole, so standard keywords are expected to function as headings and also have a categorizing function Therefore, words with a wide range of meaning are appropriate, and the number of words should not be too large (1) Select 1 to 3 words from the JSAE Standard keywords List and enter them as the first keywords (2) Select the remaining keywords (optional keywords) from the headings and body text of the paper in accordance with the optional keyword procedure below 2 Selecting optional keywords (1) Select words and phrases with concrete meanings that are as narrowly defined as possible Wrong: Critical, Speed Right: Critical Speed Wrong: Life Right: Tool Life, Fatigue Life (2) Use noun forms Wrong: Studied Experimentally Right: Experimental Study (3) The use of abbreviations (including foreign abbreviations) shall be limited to those that are in common use within a given field of specialization (As a rule, authors must not use terms they have invented themselves) Wrong: ATC Right: Automatic Tool Change, Automatic Train Control Right: CAE Wrong: CAR, CAT, CAS (4) Compound words and complex phrases shall be limited to those that are in common use Wrong: Fatigue Strength at Elevated Temperature Right: Fatigue Strength, Elevated Temperature (5) Names of metal alloys, chemical compounds, chemical elements, nuclides and the like shall be spelled out completely Wrong: CrMo Steel Right: Chromium Molybdenum Steel Wrong: Al2O3 Right: Aluminum Oxide Wrong: Cu Right: Copper (6) Where there are multiple words with the same or similar meanings, choose the one that is most concise and frequently used (7) Where there is uncertainty as to whether or not to include a word, include it 3 Number of keywords Select a total of five to ten standard keywords and optional keywords 7

8 4 Entering keywords in the manuscript Enter the keywords in the specified place in the manuscript As a rule, the first letters of English words shall be capitalized, with the remaining letters uncapitalized However, a term may be written in capital letters if the capitalization has a certain meaning 5 Changing and adding keywords Where the Editorial Committee determines that a keyword is inappropriate or that the number of keywords is insufficient, the committee may change or add keywords without the approval of the author 8

17 JSAE Copyright Rules (Purpose) Article 1: The purpose of these rules is to prescribe the requirements with regard to copyrights, based on the rules in Article 7 of the Rules for Enforcing the Articles of Association of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc (Terminology) Article 2: The terms used in these rules are defined as follows: (1) Copyright: Copyright as prescribed in Article 17, Section 1, of the Copyright Law (1960, Law No 48), including public broadcasting rights, the rights to prepare derivative works, that is, translation and adaptation rights, and the right to use the derivative works (2) Works: Works as prescribed in Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 1, of the Copyright Law (3) Author: Author as prescribed in Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 2, of the Copyright Law (Ownership of copyright) Article 3: As a rule, the copyrights for works edited or issued by JSAE (hereinafter called "JSAE-issued works") shall be the property of JSAE 2 In the case where a JSAE-issued work refers to, in whole or in part, a work whose copyright belongs to an individual or group other than JSAE, the above provision shall not be applied to the copyright of the work (Permission to use copyrighted works) Article 4: Where a copyrighted work belonging to JSAE is used, the permission of JSAE is required 2 Where an individual or group other than the author uses copyrighted works belonging to JSAE, in whole or in part, primarily for the purpose of sale, permission shall be granted upon receipt of a royalty paid as prescribed in the bylaws 3 The above provision shall not be applied to the case where an individual or group other than the author has reached a separate agreement with JSAE with regard to the use of copyright (Use of copyright by an author himself) Article 5: Where an author himself uses his own article or technical paper, in whole or in part, in reproduced or derivative form, for his own use, advance permission shall not be required, and as a rule, JSAE shall not lodge an objection to or impede such use However, where an author is allowed to use another author's works, in whole or in part, in reproduced form, as well as where an author translates another author's works for his own use or allows another party to use such translation, advance permission must be requested from JSAE in writing (Transfer of copyright) Article 6: The transfer of a copyright from an author to JSAE shall take place when the author, having confirmed these rules, submits or contributes the work to JSAE (Responsibilities of authors) Article 7: The authors themselves shall bear the responsibility for the contents of JSAE-issued works, and where infringements of other copyrights, defamation of character, or other disputes arise in regard to the works in question such that JSAE incurs damages thereby, the authors shall compensate JSAE for the damages in question (Works predating the effective date of these rules) 17

18 Article 8: All of the above rules shall apply retroactively to works edited or issued by JSAE prior to the effective date of these rules Supplementary provisions 1 JSAE-issued works shall be those works published in the JSAE journal, the JSAE Transactions, the JSAE Review, and in non-periodical publications 2 The detailed regulations necessary for the enforcement of these rules shall prescribe the processing standards for the editorial board, in accordance with these rules 3 These rules are effective as of October 2, The rule added in Article 4, Section 3, is effective as of April 15, The rule changed in part in Article 2 (1), the rule added in Article 3, Section 2, and the rules added in Article 4, Sections 3 and 5, are effective as of September 19,
