2 Woord van die voorsitter Die einde van die jaar is al weer in sig! 2014 het ʼn verskeidenheid van aktiwiteite vir ons lede gebied wat gedeeltelik in die nuusbriewe al berig is. Die klub is ook na verskeie byeenkomste toe genooi waarvan ʼn paar van hulle op die ou einde nie meer plaasgevind het nie. Die Randse Skou en mielie inry dag het nie meer plaasgevind nie maar word vir 2015 beplan. Die trekker rit (road run) sal ook volgende jaar beplan word en hopelik voldoende toestemming van grond eienaars bekom om sodoende die roete aan te pak! Baie dankie aan elke lid se bydra tydens die Plaasfees. Net deur spanwerk kan dit suksesvol wees. Daar word later in die nuusbrief daaroor berig! Ek wil graag die nuut gekose Komiteelede (Sarel Botha en Ballot Marx) baie geluk wens en terselfde tyd sterkte toewens vir die taak wat voorlê! Aan die twee lede wat uitgetree het, Charlie en Thomas, baie dankie vir die toewyding en diens wat julle gelewer het! Dit word opreg waardeer. Die 2015 Nasionale Skou sal op Baynesfield plaasvind. Lede word aangemoedig om daar ook deel te neem. ʼn HVTEK mylpaal is ook bereik in 2014 Die WPLM Ruston Enjin, wat onder die afdak op die hoof terrein staan, het vir die eerste keer in baie jare weer sy eerste asem gehaal. Baie dankie aan die groep toegewyde manne wat baie moeite ingesit het om hom aan die loop te kry. Daar is nog baie werk wat daaraan gedoen moet word, en lede word aangemoedig om die enjin restourasie projek te ondersteun. Verdermeer is ʼn paar WPLM trekkers weer aan die lewe gebring. Ook hier nooi ek lede uit om na vore te kom indien daar ʼn spesifieke WPLM trekker is waarvoor hulle die voog wil word. Ek wens almal ʼn geseënde Kersfees toe en mag die nuwe jaar julle weer genoeg energie bring om met die ou ysters te speel. Veteraan groete, Mark 2

8 Kuierdag 02 Augustus 2014 Ingestuur deur Clive King On Saturday the 2 nd August the engine day was hosted by Wessie and Gustav van der Westhuizen. Better hosts would be hard to find. Tea, coffee and other refreshments were freely available and enjoyed by all. There were a number of engines on display and the smell of hot oil mixed with petrol fumes was invigorating. These include a well restored Crossley. Wessie s Metal art decorated the entrance to the yard and the yard itself must have a couple of hundred if not thousand interesting artefacts. These include old farming, as well as household items and most of the items looked quite complete. Brings to mind the old saying one man s junk is another s mans treasure. There was even a working counter weight water pump. But the best of all was the amount of information a person could glean just by having a good look at the items on display and asking a couple of questions. There was quite a number of interesting facts given about the working of some of the engines on display. Everybody enjoyed the time spent there and in my humble opinion it s days like this one that build the interpersonal relationships between members of the club and so ensure the exchange of information takes place. Well done to the hosts for arranging such a successful day! Boor: 8 ; Slag : 3 ⅞, Die werk spoed is 100 tot 120 o/min. Die volume is 500 galon per uur. My enjin wat ek gebou het was ʼn kwart skaal. Ek het die casting kit ingevoer van Amerika. Geen onderdele is gemasjineer nie. Alles moet volgens die tekening gemaak word. Al die nie gietstuk onderdele moet self vervaardig word. Ek sluit foto s in van die projek. Indien iemand belang stel, kan julle op die internet baie inligting kry 8

12 Waar is die Kenners? Wie weet wat dit is wat Paul Otto gevind het? Jakaranda Landbouskou 2014 Ingestuur deur Ballot Marx Die afgelope week 23 tot 30 Augustus het n paar van ons trekkers en enjins uitgestal by die skou. Die skou is in die plek van die Pretoria skou wat gewoonlik in September plaasgevind het en wat n radikale gedaante verwisseling ondergaan het. Geen malemeule/pretpark nie en baie baie minder stalletjies met die klem op landbou. Soos ek reeds gesê het, Landbou was die tema en diere/voëls was die hoof tema in die sale waar meubels en diesmeer voorheen uitgestal was, is nou hoenders, eende, duiwe, hase, skape en boerbokke uitgestal. Wat n verskeidenheid! Buite in die arena is die perde deur hulle passe gesit kar-perde, ryperde 3 en 5 gang, teël perde en self ponies. Daar was ook n saal met ponies in. Verder was daar ook beeste en varke. Die laaste Saterdag is die Wolfhonde beoordeel en daar was n perde pen- en ringsteek kompetisie. Ongelukkig was die skou nie baie goed geadverteer onder die publiek nie en die klub (Mark) is eers op die laaste oomblik genader om te kom uitstal.daar was ongelukkig nie tyd om almal te nader nie en op die ou einde het Mark Hohls twee trekkers, Frits van der Merwe en Ballot Marx elk een trekker uitgestal. Peter Ponsteen en Sarel Botha het elk twee enjins gebring. Hoewel die publiek nie in groot getalle die skou bygewoon het nie het die landbou sektor tog gedink dit was n sukses en die Hoëveld Enjin en Trekker Klub sowel as die Plaasfees het goeie blootstelling gekry. Baie dankie aan Mark in besonder vir al die organisasie en moeite wat hy ingesit het sowel as die lede wat hulle trekkers en enjins beskikbaar gestel het en gebring het. 12

13 Plaasfees 2014 Ingestuur deur Brian Ilsley They came from far and wide, all kinds of people with one commonality, to look, observe, remember yesteryear and to ensure our agricultural heritage from years ago is preserved for our younger generation. The exhibitors all bubbled with enthusiasm as they off loaded their different motors, tractors and equipment, each one had a fascinating story to tell of how they discovered their motor or tractor, sourced parts for engines over 100 years old or alternatively made a plan to repair or fit a part that would work. Then how they repaired, painted and got their engine or tractor going. Each one glowed with pride as his motor or tractor roared to life after so many years of being still and thrown away. Most running perfectly still, as they were designed all those years ago. The highlight of the day was definitely the starting and running of the Ruston Hornsby in the bottom shed. What an awesome sight to see that huge flywheel, crankshaft, piston and conrod move in one fluid motion. Well done to all the people involved in getting it going again! The other highlights were the stationary steam engine pulling the thresher, the mielie thresher, the balancing beam for the tractors and the small farmall baler in action. What fun it was for me to participate in the baling, something I had never done before. To think this Engelsman helping to bale! The two Lanz Bulldogs were also a hit with the public. Quite amazing to think, they are two stroke diesels! I was involved mostly in the stationary engines and the small baler. Talking to the different people it was great to see and hear what people had been up to, to get their motors and displays up and running. It was also great to hear that most people have more projects in progress, indicating that the passion to find, repair and refurbish our old motors is still going strong. The public were in awe of all the displays and tractors. I think for a lot of the older folk, all these engines and machines brought back fond memories of years gone by on the farms in South Africa. The sound of these old motors ticking away must have brought back those memories as well. Into the new age of communication and the run up to the plaasfees saw a spike in activity on Whatsapp, as each person posted some pics of progress and I must say the fully restored motors and tractors looked so good, everyone admired the time and effort put in, to get these golden oldies looking so good again. Whatsapp has also become a keen forum to keep members up to date on finds, club activities and progress on individual projects. Once again the stalls provided an array of things to purchase, eats and drinks for refreshment in the hot sun. What a beautiful day we had to have the event on. The camping on the weekend nights was also a hit for my wife and I, as we both enjoyed the friendship and the atmosphere around the campfire. For us the Plaasfees has become a day filled with enjoyment, friendship and camaraderie and we look forward the next one next year. Who knows what the next lot of enthusiasts will bring. On a lighter note Terry and I helped Mark to get his Lister D down to the display area on Saturday morning. At the end of the day I packed up my display and not having space for Mark s lister D, I towed it with the Landy with Terry pushing from behind. It was so heavy I had to use low range and Terry had to help push.see the pic attached for details ;-)))) All in all a great day for young and old and I am sure the next Plaasfees will be well supported. Well done to Mark and his team for the time and effort put in to present this day and the face of HVTEC to all. A big thanks also goes to WPLM for their efforts and work put in to ensure a successful day. 13

18 This is an ENGINE! Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan 's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken. It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them. The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version. Some facts on the 14 cylinder version: Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.) Length: 89 feet Height: 44 feet Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm Fuel consumption at maximum power is lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion. For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range. 18

19 Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour. A cross section of the RTA96C: The internals of this engine are a bit different than most automotive engines. The top of the connecting rod is not attached directly to the piston. The top of the connecting rod attaches to a "crosshead" which rides in guide channels. A long piston rod then connects the crosshead to the piston. I assume this is done so the sideways forces produced by the connecting rod are absorbed by the crosshead and not by the piston. Those sideways forces are what makes the cylinders in an auto engine get oval-shaped over time. Installing the "thin-shell" bearings. Crank & rod journals are 38" in diameter and 16" wide: 19

21 Some pistons And some piston rods The "spikes" on the piston rods are hollow tubes that go into the holes you can see on the bottom of the pistons (left picture) and inject oil into the inside of the piston which keeps the top of the piston from overheating. Some high-performance auto engines have a similar feature where an oil squirter nozzle squirts oil onto the bottom of the piston. The cylinder deck (10 cylinder version). 22 The Fendt tractor Sent in by John M Fee My first sight of a Fendt tractor was when our Club chairman Mark Hohls brought his 1960 Farmer 2 to the SAVTEC National Show held at the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum in September This 3-cylinder tractor producing 36 hp, is original, and is in need of a lot of attention to restore it to its original best. Despite needing attention, it is still in very good running order. Having seen, this my first Fendt, I became very interested in the Fendt history, where it came from, is it still in production etc. I turned to my books and other sources, and was surprised to learn that it was today one of the leading tractor manufactures in Europe. I began my research naturally with the Farmer 2. The Farmer 2 or FW139 ( ), had an indirect injection three-cylinder MWM D206.3 diesel engine (Motoren Werke Mannheim Mannheim Motor Works] with a bore of 90mm and a stroke of 105mm giving a cylinder capacity of 2004cc which developed 34hp at 2600rpm. The power output increased to 35 hp in It had a ZP (Zahnrad Fabrik Passau Passau Gear Factory) type A210 transmission system, with eight forward and four synchronised reverse gears. The PTO had two standard speeds of 540 and 1000 rpm. The track width was adjustable from 1,25 1,50 meters. It was fitted with a differential lock, hydraulic lift and a 12v headlight system. In 1930, the Fendt brothers Hermann, Xavier and Paul, from a family of blacksmiths in Weimer Germany, introduced a small tractor with a 6 hp engine on which they mounted a plough and an independently mounted driven mower. This was affordable to the small and medium-sized farming operation to replace the horse, and they named it the Dieselross (diesel horse). On December 31st 1937, Xavier Fendt and Company was established, and the following year the 1000th Dieselross tractor, a 16 hp F18 left the production line. The model F22 was introduced in 1938, with a two-cylinder engine, a conventional upright radiator and a fourspeed gearbox. In 1942, due to the shortage of diesel, a methane generator tractor was developed. In 1946 over 1000 Dieselross tractors were produced and the engine supplier was changed from MWM to Deutz, one of the last Deutz-powered Fendts was the 18hp F18H of The 12hp Dieselross F12L was produced in The Favorit 1, featuring a 40hp engine and a multi-gear close-ratio gearbox was produced in In 1961 the 100,000th Fendt tractor, the 30hp Farmer 2 rolled off the production line. One of the most powerful machines available at the time, the MAN-engined 262hp Favorit 626 followed Over the following years, models such as the Farmer 300 range, the heavy-duty 800 range and others appeared. In 1995 the ground-breaking Xylon ( hp) made its appearance, with its mid-mounted intercooled-turbo MAN four-cylinder diesel engine. In January 1997, Fendt became part of the corporate giant AGCO, and many new high-tech models have followed. 22

23 Fendt has come a long way indeed from the Dieselross and it continues to be a leader in the industry, such as the X Concept tractor project. Fendt has been working on this project in collaboration with various universities and implement manufacturers since 2001 to develop electrically powered implements for agricultural operations. The intension is to provide a high-voltage interface in addition to the usual hydraulic connection and PTO. The tractor and implement are connected via some or other tried and tested ISOBUS system. The alternator will be placed between the engine and the transmission. Besides supplying power to the implement, power will be available for the tractors fan-drive and cooling pumps. Fendt engineers are optimistic that this will bring about real benefits to farmers and this will become a reality in another six or seven years. 23
