2 Editorial AN INVIGORATING BREEZE Naturally, a fresh breeze is blowing along the coast. For example, Kennedy T.T.S., a Belgian service business based in the middle of the port of Ghent: The company regularly plays host to trailers from all over Europe. But things are also happening in the heart of the continent. Haldex customer Komptech, based in Austria and Germany, exports highly specialised shredding, separating, sifting and composting equipment all over the world. The Polish parts dealer Inter Cars is a breath of fresh air from the east: It s number one in its sector in eastern Europe and number six in Europe as a whole. Inter Cars will soon be able to expand its product range with two additional Haldex brands that will breathe new life into the aftermarket: Grau and Reman. They stand for reliable performance at an attractive price. More about these and other exciting stories can be found in the pages in your hands. Thank goodness there s Europe. The commercial vehicle sector in the United States is experiencing yet another slowdown and emerging economies continue to lag. Of these three markets, increased demand is likely in Europe only. Although Europe today does not look like it did before the financial crisis, in many places there is vigorous growth. For this issue, Haldex Magazine roamed the continent from North Sea harbours to eastern regions and found an entrepreneurial spirit that is full of energy and internationally-oriented. It was the beginning of a new era for pneumatically-actuated disc brakes, says Jeff Stokes, who is responsible for Haldex air disc brakes worldwide. Since then, it has been one success after another for the ModulT. The proof is in the numbers: more than one million ModulT brakes have been produced to date. Renowned axle manufacturers such as SAF and Jost/Daimler have adopted ModulT, and the trailer manufacturer Krone uses ModulT for its own Krone axles. The ModulT debuted as the lightest non-axle-bound trailer brake on the market and the family of products and has made headway on a number of fronts for quite some time. The ModulT was designed as a complete programme for both pulled and tractor units, a programme that Haldex has been expanding bit by bit. For example, the.5-inch brake is already used on motor vehicles in China, and Haldex just introduced the ModulT for trailers in the United States. Additional.5- and 9.5-inch versions for trucks and buses will soon follow. Jeff Stokes believes the weight-optimised ModulT product family has a good chance of success in the U.S. fleet industry especially due to the brake s efficiency. The ModulT air disc brake is the perfect solution for fleet owners who value high performance, stability and low maintenance costs, as well as an overall lower total cost of ownership. 4 Aftermarket GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES Haldex is reconfiguring its brand portfolio. The company now offers two additional product profiles. Three brands, one partner: Göran Jarl, who is responsible for the European aftermarket, explains: We re widening our range so we can be more responsive to new customer groups. The additions to the tried-and-tested Haldex product range are both familiar and new trade names. The first is Grau, a brand that is being revived. The Grau product line represents solid and robust engineering with excellent cost-effectiveness. Grau products range from air tanks and saddles, air coils and tubes to plugs and sockets and fittings. The brand is being expanded continuously: Brakes actuators and disc brake pads will soon join the Grau line-up. All products have been carefully tested and completely satisfy Haldex s high quality standards. And, naturally, they are fully guaranteed. Another product line, Reman, is also eminently cost-effective. In contrast to Grau, however, Reman concentrates on reconditioned and therefore more sustainable products, which are especially interesting to customers focused on price. Premium reconditioning is far from uncharted waters for Haldex, however. In the USA, Haldex has been doing this at its own factory for years under the brand name LIKE-NU and successfully offers a range of reconditioned products from more than 40 manufacturers. Compressors will spearhead the Reman sales launch in Europe. The Grau and Reman brands will be the first choice of price-conscious customers who want proven quality and great value for the money. Demand for older vehicles is rising. With Grau and Reman, Haldex is ready to serve this growing segment with a range of price-performance options. The benefit of the new Haldex portfolio for customers and the trade? One-stop shop. In addition to established premium prod- ucts, Haldex now offers lower-cost alternatives, says Göran Jarl. The range is a seamless whole, he continues, that offers not only proven quality but all within a familiar and reliable partnership. 6 Rubrik Service HIGHER MATHS Braking calculations are required to register a vehicle. Customers can get them as an additional service from Haldex. A wiring diagram and a parts list. These items comprise the core of a braking calculation, which a vehicle manufacturer must present to regulatory authorities to obtain a registration. The wiring diagram shows how the individual components are connected to each other. The parts list contains details about the components. And, of course, the braking calculation itself must show that a system with these specifications meets registration requirements. Edgar Schneider, who has worked with such calculations at Haldex for almost 40 years, finds that his work varies greatly: There are easy jobs and complicated ones, he says. In the days of slide rules, he continues, a single calculation could sometimes take a couple of days. Computers, of course, subsumed such work and today there is Brake It, a special program developed by Haldex in partnership with software experts to do braking calculations. The program allows Haldex to currently produce 2,000-2,500 braking calculations a year. But this is a subject that still contains tricky issues, not only concerning software. That s when it helps to have a resource like Edgar Schneider whose decades of experience have taught him a thing or two about the process: Well, I did help develop the program, he says, and I know when to give the software a nudge in the right direction. There are very few customers who have not yet taken advantage of this special service from Haldex. The clientele of this special department is large and diverse: The spectrum ranges from market leaders in the trailer industry with large series to specialised manufacturers who need many individual verifications, says Helmut Maltry, group leader for braking calculations at Haldex in Heidelberg. Some customers, such as Komptech (see page 0), have also taken Haldex up on its offer to lend them the software to do their own calculations. The procedure is very simple. The customer receives a questionnaire from Haldex that requests relevant vehicle data such as dimensions, axle type and transport weight along with brake and tyre type. Based on this information, Haldex compiles a list of the components necessary for regulatory compliance, Braking calculations are required to register a vehicle. which means advice is often an integral part of Haldex s braking calculation service. The calculation is then submitted by the customer when the vehicle is inspected by regulatory authorities who will not certify a vehicle without this document. The braking calculation, however, is in no way a free pass. There are good reasons why regulatory authorities like to carry out practical tests. The calculation, for example, does not factor in the physical length of mechanical connections and brake response time. It is the customer s responsibility to pursue answers to these kinds of questions. The wiring diagram and parts list, as provided by Haldex, aren t everything. 8 Select Distributor FULL SPEED AHEAD Poland s Inter Cars started small in 990 but has grown rapidly. Today the company is the number-one spare parts retailer in eastern Europe. Eastern Europe has plenty of old vehicles: It s a huge market. And it s one that Inter Cars based in Czosnow, near Warsaw, has specialised in. Most of our turnover comes from components for vehicles more than five-years old, says Sławomir Rybarczyk, Commercial Director of Commercial Vehicles at Inter Cars. The business has achieved a certain stature. It has not only 89 bases in Poland but 62 more in 2 other countries as far afield as Italy. Parts in figures: 78 million units per year, says Sławomir Rybarczyk; a respectable volume. He goes on to describe their importance to the company: We re number one in eastern Europe, sixth in Europe as a whole and tenth worldwide. Inter Cars has been active in the parts trade for as long as anyone can remember. To cite a few examples: The number of training and education events organised by the company is currently about a thousand a Education and training is a priority for Inter Cars. year. And for many years, the product portfolio, once focused solely on cars, has included truck and motorcycle parts as well as special equipment for workshops and industry. In addition, Inter Cars is an importer for Ducati. And as if this weren t enough, an Inter Cars subsidiary reconditions a wide spectrum of components under the Lauber brand from alternators to common rail diesel injectors and sells these products via its parent company network. Another of its many subsidiaries is the Polish trailer manufacturer Feber, which produces tipper semi-trailers for the construction and agricultural sectors. But particular attention is being paid at Inter Cars to the commercial vehicle parts trade. That s the sector with the most vig- 8 Haldex Magazine no. 32 Spring/Summer 206

Inter Cars commercial vehicles division functions as an independent organisation Sławomir Rybarczyk, Commercial Director of Commercial Vehicles: Focus on older vehicles. that applies a highly-targeted approach to its business. The division s specialties include training programmes that focus specifically on commercial vehicle repair technology and the development of a chain of workshops on a franchise basis for commercial vehicles. Around 70 such centres already exist under the name Q-Service Truck in a number of countries in eastern Europe. Haldex has been at Inter Cars side from the start of its commercial vehicle activity: As far back as 997, we were selling automatic brake adjusters, recalls Adam Golas, who is in charge of pneumatics at Inter Cars and who goes on to describe the development of the relationship: Just one year later we had practically the whole Haldex programme in our product range. Adam Golas remains appreciative of the Haldex partnership. In particular, the price-performance ratio is excellent, he says, while also praising the great flexibility and speed with which Haldex makes decisions and with which I receive feedback. Inter Cars strives not only to maintain good contact with suppliers but to fully develop its relationship with customers. How else was the company able to welcome more than 00,000 guests to its three-day festival at a large football stadium in Warsaw? The roadmap to its 30th anniversary in 2020 has already been drawn. For Inter Cars, the goals are as ambitious as ever. Founded in 990 as a garage workshop, its turnover today is about one billion euros. [ Over 3,000 customers in approximately 60 countries worldwide: This is just one measure of success of a company, founded in 992, that makes very specialised machinery that is not exactly cheap. A Komptech machine can easily set you back as much as 500,000 euros. We don t have machines ready and waiting to be ordered, says CEO Bernd Thielepape as he describes the company s business model: It s more a case of developing solutions for what are usually highly specialised tasks solutions that can sometimes look a little intimidating. For example, one Komptech shredder bears the name Terminator for good reason. Its favourite delicacies include bulky or industrial waste. Another one is Axtor, which slices green waste, including tree trunks, into smaller bits either shredded for composting or bite-sized chips for wood-fuelled power plants. There can be more horsepower in the bowels of a trailer like this than under the bonnet of the truck that tows it. Driving power is supplied by Caterpillar engines that can CEO Bernd Thielepape: Specialised solutions. unleash up to 800 horsepower. Komptech uses diesel units from the U.S. brands Caterpillar and Perkins exclusively. The kind of service we need is available worldwide for their motors, says Bernd Thielepape. Some 30 basic types comprise Komptech s product programme, which includes not only this kind of chopper but also a diverse family of large sifters and separators as well as what are known as windrow turners long-legged machines that travel over triangular compost rows and mix them up. Komptech, in general, is more focused on mobile machinery than stationary systems. Mobile systems are more popular, says Bernd Thielepape, because these are the solution of choice for agricultural contractors: many customers have either multiple sites or want to work in different parts of larger sites. So Komptech pays special attention to how its machines roll over terrain. In general, there are three variations: a machine can be mounted directly on a truck or used as a pulled unit with two or three axles. Komptech builds most of these assemblies itself but purchases the axles and braking systems, which, as a rule, are designed for maximum speeds above 60 km/h. Quality and partnership are the alpha and omega of everything we do, says Bernd Thielepape, explaining why the company chose Haldex for all its braking system components. Komptech particularly appreciates the top service provided by support staff Park and shunt valve: TEM Safe Parking from Haldex. such as sales engineer Andreas Spannaus and Haldex s exemplary training and documentation. But there s another crucial issue: More than 90 percent of Komptech s production is for export, much of it within NAFTA where Spring/Summer 206 Haldex Magazine no. 32

Drum roll please: sifting machines of all kinds are a Komptech mainstay. twelve-volt systems are standard. It s therefore important for Komptech that Haldex EB+ functions on 2 volts as well as 24. Since ECE R3 came into force in Germany, even vehicles designed by Komptech for maximum speeds above 60 km/h have been subject to extensive testing on the test track. But handing over brand-new, expensive, specialised equipment to third parties who subject it to complex manoeuvres? This was never going to be the company s cup of tea. Komptech engineers set out to find a solution. In no time at all, they conjured up a one-off dummy trailer that can be configured for axle load and centre of gravity. This means they have a vehicle that can reproduce the exact braking conditions that apply to their other vehicles, subject to official approval. Outback connection: Komptech delivers its giant shredders as far afield as Australia. The customer s original can now stay in the factory in pristine condition while the dummy trailer is towed to authorities as a simple but fully operational lab rat. GREEN LIGHT Green efficiency is the name of an innovation programme started by Komptech in 203 aimed at achieving both environmentally-friendly technology and best value for customers. It includes green diesel motors as well as the most effective transmission for the application: mechanical instead of hydraulic or simply electric where appropriate. The company, based in Frohnleiten, Austria, employs about 560 people with an annual turnover of around EUR 00 million. Its German factory in Oelde, North Rhine-Westphalia, functions as a specialty centre for sifting and separating machines and chassis. The parent plant in Austria concentrates on shredding and compost machinery with chassis from Oelde. Since 205, Komptech s majority shareholder has been the Hirtenberger Group, which is known for its expertise in areas such as airbag detonators and gas pistons for seat belt tensioners. Bernd Thielepape praises the Group for being a strategic investor; not just in it for quick returns. Komptech s motto is nevertheless keep on growing, and the company has ambitious plans. Bernd Thielepape sums up the company s approach: We ve always been about innovation, adding, most of our products are at the beginning of their life cycle. 2 Haldex Magazine no. 32 Spring/Summer 206

Like a spider on its web : That s how Technical Manager Paul Zwitser characterises the advantages of being at the heart of the action. Ghent is the thirdlargest harbour in Belgium. So there s certainly no shortage of goods traffic there. Kennedy T.T.S. s spacious grounds are ringed by a number of enormous logistical warehouses. Moreover, cars and trucks roll out of a Volvo factory just a stone s throw away. And the ArcelorMittal steelworks, which specialise in sheet steel for the automotive industry, are just around the corner. And yet for many years the port of Ghent was a wasteland when it came to trailer services. Kennedy T.T.S. founder Erik Eyskens had his eureka moment 6 years ago when he realised the port would be an ideal location for such a company. But he didn t think just locally when he established the company which offers a complete service package for everything trailers and is renowned far beyond Ghent for its in-depth knowledge of ABS and EBS: the Founder Erik Eyskens is in charge of business matters at Kennedy T.T.S. company s domestic clientele come from all over and people sometimes even make the 45-mile trip from Brussels to see us, says Paul Zwitser. But he will soon pass the baton to Stefan Franz. Even though governments make decisions, he continues, they need expert advice and support. Trade organisations and associations are the interface between the business sector and the political sphere. And Helmut Maltry is always close to the action. He is Haldex s man in the national and international world of diplomacy and represents the company on various working groups. For example, at the national level in Germany, the Braking and Steering Systems Working Group (AKBLA) meets twice a year under the umbrella of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). At the international level, Haldex is represented by the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA), a Brussels-based association backed by more than 3,000 European automotive suppliers who employ some three million people. CLEPA is the sector's mouthpiece in the EU and at the UN. And processes can vary greatly. At the UN, almost everything happens in English, Russian and French, says Helmut Maltry, referring to procedures in Geneva, while at the EU in Brussels, all European Union languages are catered to by an army of interpreters. The ears of this man of words are always open. Trade association work is not only about participating in regulatory development but also about making sure the information gets applied to future product specifications, he says, explaining why it s advantageous to get involved in committees. But this diplomat is getting on and has started easing up on this work. He will soon hand over the baton to Stefan Franz, who is a well-qualified successor: The trained engineer started his career as a certified vehicle expert before joining Haldex 6 years ago.
