Electronic Height Sensor Introduction Electronic Height Sensor Electronic height sensor enables the EBS to be available for mechanical suspension vehicles.

The sensor is of the rotary type and shares mounting characteristics and control arms with the well-known Haldex EGP levelling valve for air suspensions.

2 Electronic Height Sensor Introduction Electronic Height Sensor Electronic height sensor enables the EBS to be available for mechanical suspension vehicles. The electronic load sensing function is possible using the electronic height sensor. The sensor is of the rotary type and shares mounting characteristics and control arms with the well-known Haldex EGP levelling valve for air suspensions. UNLADEN Application The electronic height sensor is installed to measure the difference in height between the chassis and axle as the load varies UNLADEN to LADEN and vice versa. Operation SPRING DEFLECTION The electronic height sensor is fixed to the trailer chassis and connects to the axle via a linkage which converts the linear movement as the springs are compressed to a rotational one at the height sensor. Rotational movement of the height sensor spindle varies the output signal voltage, which is interpreted by the ECU which in turn calculates the load according to parameters pre-set during installation. LADEN LOAD LOAD = Deflection = Rotation 15 When the trailer is loaded the distance between the chassis and axle is reduced, raising the height sensor rod which in turn rotates the spindle increasing voltage / brake pressure output. 2

3 Electronic Height Sensor Installation The Electronic Height Sensor is attached to the Chassis by two M8 screws, Max torque 15Nm. C L The exact mounting position of the electronic height sensor relative to the axle centre is determined by the spring deflection (must be known) and the HORIZONTAL lever length (obtained from DIAG+ program). Rear End View After the horizontal lever length has been established, the electronic height sensor must be installed on to the trailer chassis with the cable connector pointing downwards and the arrow on the spindle upwards. In such a position that the VERTICAL rod is central to the axle/axles, both longitudinally & laterally. Plan View With the trailer on flat level ground, un-laden and at its normal king pin height the valve body mounting holes and horizontal lever must be PARALLEL to the ground. As an aid to this the spindle can be locked to the housing via two 4mm rods. The angle between the vertical and horizontal linkage rods must be 90 degrees and free from any sideways tension. Identification arrow must point vertical Location for horizontal position locking pins After mounting the valve, the horizontal control rod can be fixed in position with locking pins so that the vertical rod length can be established and secured by the hose clips. Subsequently the locking pins should be removed. X X NOTE: Body mounting holes must be parallel to the ground (i.e. distance X=X) 3

Setting DIAG+ The mechanical height sensor is for use on mechanical suspension trailers. It will allow the EB+ to measure load and therefore adjust braking force according to the load plate data.

Once the deflection is entered, the user must set the lever length to between the allowed lever length range. The allowed lever length range varies depending upon the deflection.

5 Setting DIAG+ The mechanical height sensor is for use on mechanical suspension trailers. It will allow the EB+ to measure load and therefore adjust braking force according to the load plate data. To configure the mechanical height sensor the user must first enter the trailer spring deflection. This is given by the suspension manufacturer and can only operate between 10mm to 65mm. Once the deflection is entered, the user must set the lever length to between the allowed lever length range. The allowed lever length range varies depending upon the deflection. Examples: A deflection of 20 mm will allow a lever length range of 100 to 151 mm (as seen in the picture). A deflection of 55 mm will allow a lever length range of 276 to 320 mm. Once the lever length is set, the user then enters the actual lever length. Highlight (check) to select left or right installation Lever Length Range The user now selects a left or right installation. The mechanical height sensor also needs calibrating which is performed during EOLT. To perform calibration the trailer must be fully unladen and at normal running king pin height. NOTE: After the completion of the Sensor-Modulator tests ensure that ALL the axles are on the ground before calibrating the Mechanical Height Sensor. Electrical Use auxiliary Din cable connecter ( ) between the Electronic Height sensor and auxiliary ports 4 or 5 of the EB+ ECU. AUX 4 or 5 5

V out Maintenance If defects are noted during vehicle examinations or when driving, then the unit should be exchanged. When working with high pressure cleaners a distance of at least 50 cm should be observed. Missing exhaust caps are to be renewed. Testing ROTATION ANGLE ( 0 ) Via end-of-line test. Free movement and condition of the linkage is to be checked, bent or welded linkages are to be exchanged. Brittled or hardened rubber pieces are to be renewed.
