1 Mid-December 2015, Volume 17, No. 24 All-New 2016 Camaro Hits the Road The all-new sixth-generation 2016 Camaro sets new standards for levels of performance, technology and refinement in the sporty car segment. The new Camaro is available in 4 models: 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS. The SS models are equipped with the 6.2L V8 while LT models have the all-new 3.6L V6. In early 2016, the Camaro convertible model and models with the 2.0L turbo engine will be available. The new Camaro shares the same light, rear wheel drive architecture as the Cadillac ATS and CTS sport sedans. Approximately 70 percent of the architectural components are unique to the Camaro. Vehicle mass has been reduced between pounds ( kg), depending on the model, delivering a more responsive driving experience. At the same time, structural rigidity was increased by 28 percent. With a lighter, stiffer architecture and more powerful engines, the performance of the new Camaro SS delivers better lap times than the previous generation s track-focused Camaro 1LE package. The SS hood has functional air vents that help to improve engine cooling and reduce front end lift, while the SS front fascia has integrated brake cooling ducts. continued on page 2 Techline News Calibration Files to be Delivered Through New Techline Data Service As vehicle software updates through TIS2Web have become larger, a new solution is coming soon to help dealerships manage these files more efficiently. The new Techline Data Service (TDS) is an application intended to eliminate the need for each dealership computer to download large calibration files and exhaust Internet bandwidth. TDS also is designed to eliminate the need to install these large calibration files from DVDs. With TDS installed and configured, one computer in the dealership is to be dedicated for downloading calibration files, while other PCs can pull the files from the dedicated computer through the shop's network. The download speed along with download times will be adjustable for convenience and the dedicated PC can be set to download calibrations throughout the day or night. Preparing for TDS TDS will begin rolling out in early It will be a staged rollout to handle the volume of dealerships. Once the rollout of continued on page 4 CONTENTS All-New Camaro Hits the Road....1 Calibration Files to be Delivered Through New Techline Data Service Camaro Delivers Performance Options....3 OEM and ACDelco Replacement Battery Specifications Chart....4 Incorrect Temperature Displays Compass Always Shows North....5 Call the GM Tire Hotline for Winter Tire Assistance...6 Easy Entry Seat Motor Noise....6 Customer Care and Aftersales
2 All-New 2016 Camaro Hits the Road continued from page 1 Powertrains The available engines during the initial vehicle launch period are the 6.2L V8 (RPO LT1) with continuous variable valve timing (VVT), direct injection (DI) and Active Fuel Management (AFM) and the new 3.6L V6 (RPO LGX) with continuous VVT, DI with AFM. The 6.2L V8 small-block is standard in the Camaro SS models. When equipped with the Hydra-Matic 8-speed 8L90 automatic transmission (RPO M5U), the engine is capable of 0 60 mph (0 97 km/h) in 4.0 seconds and produces 455 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine line-up for Camaro features (left to right) the small block 6.2L V8 LT1, an all-new 3.6L V6 and an Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder that will be introduced later. The 6.2L V8 also is available with the Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. The transmission now offers Active Rev Match, which helps provide smoother shifting by matching the engine speed to the next selected gear. By monitoring shift lever and clutch operation, engine speed is adjusted to match a calibrated value based on gear selection. Active Rev Match is maintained for a few seconds between shifts, and then deactivates if the shift is not completed. The system is activated and deactivated by pressing either of the paddles marked REV MATCH on the steering wheel. The all-new 3.6L V6 (RPO LGX) is standard in the Camaro LT models. The LT can be paired with the Hydra-Matic 8-speed 8L45 automatic transmission (RPO M5T) or the manual Tremec 6-Speed transmission (RPO M13). The engine produces 335 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque. Brakes For the Camaro LT, the brakes include 12.6-inch (320 mm) front rotors with fourpiston calipers and 12.4-inch (315 mm) rear rotors with single-piston sliding calipers. The rear brake calipers have an integrated park brake actuator. For the Camaro SS, the standard brakes include 13.6-inch (345 mm) front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers and 13.3-inch (338 mm) rear rotors with four piston fixed calipers. Brembo brakes are standard on SS models and available on LT models with RPO J55 on the front brakes only. The brakes are optimized for the car s mass and performance capability and provide an improved brake feel across the board for all models due to the new ABS system and reduced vehicle mass. The vehicle is equipped with a Bosch ABS 9.0 brake system. The electronic brake control module (EBCM) and the brake pressure modulator valve are serviced separately. TIP: Camaro LT models that are equipped with RPO JL9 brakes require a revised brake bleed procedure. Refer to the appropriate Service Information. Interior Features The new Camaro features a driver-focused cockpit with an available 8-inch (203 mm) diagonal configurable color digital instrument cluster and an available 8-inch (203 mm) or a 7-inch (178 mm) infotainment color touch screen display. Standard connectivity features include Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay capability (excluding RPO IOB) and OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi. Use the vent trim rings to adjust HVAC settings. All models come standard with the Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) pushbutton start system. A new feature is the functionality of the four air vent trim rings on the HVAC system. These air vent trim rings around the center air vents are the functional controls for the temperature and fan speed. Rotate each ring to adjust temperature and fan speed on the single-zone HVAC system or rotate them to control the temperature settings for the driver and passenger on the dual-zone HVAC system. Standard on the 2SS and available on the 2LT is a customizable Interior Spectrum Lighting feature that offers 24 different ambient lighting effects, including fade and transition on the dash, door panels and center console. This feature also includes the theatrical car show mode. When using the key fob and unlocking the vehicle, a lighting pulse will display inside the car. Upon vehicle start-up there is light movement across the car moving outward from the infotainment touch screen to the doors for approximately 1.5 seconds. When switching driving modes, the same light movement occurs for approximately 1.5 seconds. Infotainment The Camaro offers three different infotainment options. Radio infotainment system RPO IOB features midlevel connectivity, no apps infotainment, and a 7-inch (178 mm) color touchscreen display. Bring your own media. Radio infotainment system RPO IO5 has enhanced connectivity and an 8-inch (203 mm) color touchscreen display. Radio infotainment system RPO IO6 has an embedded navigation radio system, enhanced connectivity features and an 8-inch (203 mm) color touchscreen display. RPOs IO5 and IO6 also offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, where phone features on shown on the touchscreen display. A Projection icon on the MyLink screen is visible when a phone is not connected and changes to indicate Apple CarPlay or Android Auto when a compatible phone is connected via a USB. Transport and Recovery Tow hook installed in the front grille. The tow hook access point on the Camaro was uniquely packaged in the front grille to keep a clean front end appearance. The LT and the GM accessory grille do not have a tow hook access cover. To access the tow hook access point on the SS, a small cover must be removed. Install the tow eye into the socket by turning it clockwise until it stops. Attach the recovery cable to the installed tow eye and load the vehicle onto the flatbed. Transport the vehicle on a flatbed car carrier only. Special Tools For information on the new special tools released for the 2016 Camaro, refer to Bulletin #15-NA-066. 3 2016 Camaro Delivers Performance Options The all-new 2016 Camaro is built to perform on or off the track. There are several features that allows the driver to maximize the performance of the vehicle. It s important to understand how these features operate when diagnosing any related conditions. Driver Mode Control Driver Mode Control changes the software calibrations of the suspension, steering, and powertrain to achieve various performance characteristics, based on driving preferences, weather, or road conditions. The Driver Mode Control has three or four modes: Tour, Sport, Snow/Ice, and Track. The Track Mode is for SS models only. Press the up or down arrow on the MODE control switch on the center console to make a mode selection. Pressing the switch will display a graphic on the instrument cluster of all available ride modes and change to the next mode. The Tour (default mode) and Sport Modes will feel similar on a smooth road. The Sport Mode will remain active at the next ignition cycle if selected when the vehicle is turned off. Performance Shifting Driver Mode Control switch Driver Modes While driving in Sport Mode or Track Mode (SS models), if the Tap Shift feature has not been activated, the transmission will identify when the vehicle is being driven in a competitive manner and will remain in a gear longer than it would in the normal driving mode based on throttle input and vehicle lateral acceleration. If there is a rapid reduction in throttle from a heavy throttle position at high rpm, the transmission will maintain the current gear up to near redline rpm. While braking, the transmission will automatically downshift to the next lower gear keeping engine speed above approximately 3,000 rpm. If the vehicle is then driven for a short time at a steady speed, and without high cornering loads, the transmission will upshift one gear at a time, until 8th gear is selected. After shifting to 8th gear, or coming to a complete stop, the transmission will return to normal Sport Mode shifting. Competitive Driving Mode Settings Competitive Mode is an optional handling mode on SS models that allows increased performance while accelerating and cornering by regulating and optimizing the engine, brakes, and suspension performance. These modes are for use at a closed course race track and are not intended for use on public roads. They will not compensate for a driver s inexperience or lack of familiarity with the race track. To turn on Competitive Mode, press the Traction Control button twice quickly while in Sport or Track Mode. Competitive Mode allows full engine power while the StabiliTrak system helps maintain directional control of the vehicle through selective brake application. In this mode, traction control is off and Launch Control is available. The Launch Control feature available on SS models is part of the Competitive Mode. It s a form of traction control that manages tire spin while launching the vehicle, which allows the driver to achieve high levels of vehicle acceleration in a straight line. Launch Control is only available when: Competitive Mode is selected. The vehicle is not moving. The steering wheel is pointing straight. To use Launch Control, the accelerator should be pressed to the floor while the clutch in engaged (and the manual transmission in 1st gear, if equipped) or with the brake pedal firmly applied (automatic transmission, if equipped). Next, the clutch or brake pedal should be released while keeping the accelerator pressed to the floor. After the vehicle is launched, the system continues in Competitive Mode. Driver Shift Control Driver Shift Control enables the driver to manually control the automatic transmission shifting. This can be done through Temporary Tap Shift Mode or Manual Mode. The steering wheel paddles are used for both modes. Tapping either the upshift or downshift paddle will place the transmission in Tap Shift Mode while the transmission is in Drive. Use the left paddle to downshift and the right paddle to upshift. The current gear is displayed on the Driver Information Center on the instrument cluster. Automatic shifting will return after seven seconds of driving at a steady speed, or when the vehicle comes to a stop. The Manual Mode enables the driver to shift the automatic transmission similar to a manual transmission. This can used for sportier driving or when climbing or descending hills, to stay in a gear longer, or to downshift for more power or engine braking. To use Manual Mode, move the shift lever to the left from Drive into the side gate marked +/. Use the shift lever or steering wheel paddles to shift. The transmission will only allow the driver to shift into gears appropriate for the vehicle speed and engine rpm. Thanks to Sherman Dixon and Ann Briedis Mid-December
4 OEM and ACDelco Replacement Battery Specifications Chart Correct battery cold cranking amperage (CCA) ratings and type are critical for proper test results when using the EL Midtronics GR8 Battery Charger/Tester. It may be difficult to see the battery specification label with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) part number and CCA rating and type without removing the battery or other components. An updated battery specifications table has been released in Bulletin # A. It lists the original equipment ratings and part numbers used to set up a proper battery test. It also provides the ACDelco part number for the correct ACDelco battery warranty replacement. The ACDelco battery warranty replacement in the catalog is designated by the "Original Equipment Replacement" note in the description field. Battery Testing When testing batteries, always perform the following: Select Out of Vehicle when setting up the test. Disconnect both battery cables from the battery. The battery does not need to be removed from the vehicle. Connect the EL Battery Tester directly to the battery terminal posts. Select the correct CCA. The battery should be close to room temperature and not frozen. Select the proper battery type; Flooded, AGM, or Stop/Start AGM (Auxiliary Battery). Spiral AGM is not used by GM. The proper battery type must be selected to prevent battery damage and ensure correct test results. Techline News Bulletin # A lists the battery specs for correct battery replacement. Cold Batteries If a battery has set for a long period of time or has set in cold weather, the long stand time can affect the testing results. Inside a conventional lead acid battery, the electrolyte is generally composed of 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water. When a lead acid battery is inactive (not actively discharged and charged), the acid, being heavier than water, will settle toward the bottom. This leaves a low acid concentration near the top and a higher concentration at the bottom, referred to as acid stratification. Since it is the concentration of the sulfuric acid that lowers the electrolyte freeze point, the upper levels of the acid (with low acid concentration) in this state can begin freezing at or near 32 F (0 C). Stratification does not affect AGM-type batteries. In a low state of charge (SOC), lead sulfate will form on the battery plates. This creates a sulfated battery condition where the lead sulfate insulates the plate s reactive material, which reduces capacity and decreases the battery s ability to accept a charge. Sulfation begins to occur below 80% state of charge in as little as two weeks. The longer the battery is left in a low state of charge, the more lead sulfate forms. Batteries that have been deeply discharged for periods longer than 60 days may be permanently damaged. Batteries that are deeply discharged will take an extended time to recharge. Batteries that are cold (below freezing) can falsely fail testing. Batteries that are cold and deeply discharged must first be warmed prior to testing & charging. It is impossible to calculate the core temperature of a battery, so warm the battery a minimum of 12 hours before testing. Longer warming times will be needed depending on how cold the battery is. The EL Battery Tester has a built in algorithm to limit the length of time needed to recharge a battery. For a cold battery resistant to charge, or a deeply discharged battery, it may calculate a longer than reasonable time to recover the battery and fail it. With a newer battery that is most likely simply discharged, select Manual Charge, Limit Current, 10 Amps, for 120 Minutes. Once that is complete, perform another diagnostic charge. The Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery requires different charging voltages than lead acid batteries. The EL Battery continued on page 5 Calibration Files to be Delivered Through New Techline Data Service continued from page 1 TDS is complete, Techline Cache disks will be discontinued. What dealerships need for TDS: A dedicated PC that meets GM specifications that can be powered on at all times A dedicated PC "hard wired" to the network (Wireless will work but is not recommended) Windows 7 Professional operating system At least 500 GB of free hard drive space and 4 GB of RAM The person installing the service must have Windows administrator access Sleep Mode must be disabled in power management An administrative message that TDS is ready to be loaded will be sent out once it has been deployed to each dealership. When it s deployed, a new "TDS" Tab in TIS2Web will appear for launching the installer. Make sure to only launch the installer on the PC that will be used as the TDS storage machine in the dealership. Refer to TIS2Web for complete instructions. 5 OEM and ACDelco Replacement Battery Specifications Chart continued from page 4 Incorrect Temperature Displays The driver s and passenger s temperature settings may be displayed in Celsius or the outside ambient temperature may be missing from the radio/hvac display on some LaCrosse, Verano, Malibu, and 2016 Malibu Limited models. These conditions may be caused by a disconnected outside ambient temperature sensor or the wiring may have a fault. To correct these conditions, Ambient air temperature gauge sensor on a LaCrosse connect the vehicle to a scan tool (GDS2) and check the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) for DTCs. If DTC B0158 (Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit) is set, check the connection of the outside ambient temperature sensor. If the sensor is connected, check the integrity of circuits 61 and 636 from the sensor to the Instrument Panel Cluster or follow the appropriate Service Information for diagnosing DTC B0158. For additional information on wiring repairs, refer to Bulletin # Thanks to Christopher Crumb Compass Always Shows North The compass on the radio display may always show North (N) regardless of vehicle direction on some 2014 Regal, LaCrosse, ATS, CTS VIN A, SRX, XTS, Corvette, Impala, Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 models. This condition affects the following radios: RPO IO5 (Regal, LaCrosse, CTS VIN A, XTS, Impala, Silverado, Sierra), RPO RAO without UY4 Navigation (SRX, Corvette); and RPO UA3 without UY4 Navigation (ATS). The compass direction when the navigation icon is selected should indicate the vehicle direction. Reprogram the radio with the latest calibrations using TIS2Web to address this condition with the compass. Thanks to Ryan Dorland Tester has an algorithm built in for AGM battery testing. AGM must be selected when prompted or damage to the battery will result. Make sure to select the proper battery type: AGM and CCA during charger set up. Incorrectly selecting "flooded" battery may cause unnecessary battery replacements. AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging, so maximum charging voltage should be limited to 15.5V. Refer to Bulletin # A for additional information on testing cold batteries. 6 Call the GM Tire Hotline for Winter Tire Assistance Many GM high performance models, such as the CTS-V, ATS-V, Camaro ZL1, Corvette and Chevrolet SS, are factory equipped with summer tires that are optimized for maximum dry and wet road performance while still retaining satisfactory tread life, excellent durability and low noise levels. During winter months in areas that receive a significant amount of snow, winter tires that are designed to enhance winter driving are a recommended alternative for summer tires. Winter tires, in general, are optimized for increased traction on snow and ice. In some cases, this may translate into decreased dry road traction, increased road noise and shorter tread life. The following models are equipped with summer tires: CTS Sedan; CTS Wagon; CTS-V, Camaro; CTS Coupe; Camaro ZL1; Regal GS; ATS; CTS Sedan (VIN A), Camaro Z28; CTS-V Sport, Corvette, Corvette Z51, Chevrolet SS; 2016 ATS-V and CT6. All of these models are rear-wheel drive with the exception of the Regal GS, which is front-wheel drive. In all cases, if a switch is made to winter tires, all four tires must be replaced. Do not install winter tires only on the driving wheels. When selecting winter tires, the same size and load value as the Original Equipment tires should be used. A tire in the same size and a higher load value is acceptable. Clearance issues, speedometer error and/or altered vehicle handling characteristics may occur if tires of a different size are used. If winter tires are not available in the same speed rating as the Original Equipment tires, the speed rating of the winter tire chosen must not be exceeded and driving should be adjusted accordingly. GM Tire Program There are several choices in winter tires currently available through the GM Tire Program in sizes that match Original Equipment tires. Winter tires purchased through the GM Tire Program are warranted through the GM Aftersales Tire Warranty Program in the U.S. (In Canada, refer to the tire manufacturer s aftermarket warranty policy). Winter tires are not guaranteed to be in stock. The cost to purchase any winter tires is the customer s responsibility. Tire Hotline If assistance is needed in obtaining an appropriate winter tire, contact the GM Tire Program by calling at (U.S.). In Canada, contact the District Manager Customer Care and Aftersales. The GM Tire Program Hotline also can be contacted for help with ordering replacement tires for new model year vehicles that have just started production or for limited production vehicles, such as the new Michelin Pilot tires on the CTS-V. GM usually will have a reserve from the tire companies for new limited production vehicles with new tires. These tires also will be available through the GM Tire Program. TIP: In some cases, a run flat winter tire may not be available for a vehicle equipped with run flat tires. In these situations an inflator kit, part number , should also be ordered to provide extended mobility since the vehicle would not be equipped with a spare tire. The sealant in the inflator kit should not be used on run-flat tires. Thanks to Jon Nowak Easy Entry Seat Motor Noise On some ATS Coupe and ELR models, increased power seat motor noise may be noticed when moving the driver s or passenger s seat forward or rearward using the Easy Entry power seat switch located at the top of the seat back or using the Seat adjustment switch (1) on the ATS Coupe power seat switch on the side of the seat. Do not replace the seats or motors for this condition. All Easy Entry seats for these models are the same. The Easy Entry power seat adjustment motors in the ATS Coupe and the ELR are unique. They run at a different rate and produce more noticeable noise than other vehicle models without the Easy Entry feature. Before making any repairs, compare the noise level of both seats using the Easy Entry seat switch and the side seat switch to determine if there is a difference in the driver s and passenger s seat. TIP: Comparing an ATS Coupe to another ATS Coupe or an ELR to another ELR is advised. Do not compare the noise level to an ATS Sedan or CTS Sedan (VIN A). Those seat motors are different.
