At the same time, the diesel engine s fuel consumption remains low, which is supported by the optional eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic. This additionally provides higher shifting and driving comfort through fi nely tuned gearing and near-seamless gearshifts. BMW EfficientDynamics is the BMW Group strategy that comprises all measures aimed at improving efficiency while simultaneously enhancing dynamics in every BMW vehicle. Since 1995, it has led to a 30% reduction in CO 2 output across the European newvehicle fleet, a figure that will fall by a further 25% by the summer of Through tireless research, BMW is consistently producing innovations for the energy effi cient mobility of the future. The BMW X3, like every BMW, incorporates many aspects of the multi-award-winning BMW Effi cientdynamics technology as standard. These technologies interact perfectly to reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions while maximising performance and dynamism. Less fuel, more driving pleasure a paradox that BMW has resolved once and for all. For the benefi t of the environment and the enjoyment of the driver. Auto Start-Stop. Automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as you engage the clutch (manual) or take your foot off the brake (automatic), the engine immediately starts up again and your journey continues. And without any effort on your part, you ve saved fuel and helped protect the environment. Brake Energy Regeneration. Now when you brake, you won t just be slowing yourself down, you ll be helping to keep your car moving. It sounds counter-intuitive, but whenever you apply the brakes or take your foot off the accelerator, you recycle energy instead of wasting it. Brake Energy Regeneration then uses this energy to recharge the battery. In the process, it reduces the demand on your engine which means you consume less fuel and keeps down your CO 2 emissions. ECO PRO mode. This mode enables fuel consumption to be reduced by up to 20% depending on your individual driving style. For example, ECO PRO will advise the driver to accelerate less aggressively, the optional eight-speed automatic transmission shifts even faster to higher gears and the automatic air conditioning is subject to energy optimised settings. Electric Power Steering. In comparison with conventional hydraulic steering systems, the electric power steering support only uses energy as needed to assist steering. When the steering wheel is static, for example when driving on a straight road, the electric motor is inactive. OUTSTANDING: INTELLIGENT LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION. Optimum Shift Indicator. Changing gear at the right time can produce signifi cant fuel savings. In BMW X3 models with manual transmissions, the optimum gear shift indicator tells you which gear you should select to increase fuel effi ciency. The display is conveniently positioned directly in your line of vision. Depending on your driving style, the system also recommends how to go up and down the gears more effectively. The structure of the BMW X3 uses a wealth of high-tech materials. They include lightweight aluminium in the front and the chassis, high-strength steel in the body and ultra-modern plastics and magnesium. For more information please visit: Real Time Traffic Information. Optional Real Time Traffic Information provides a precise account of current traffic situations in real time. The information is presented on the Navigation map by using a colour coding system indicating the flow of traffic. Road networks are divided into distances as short as 500m for superior accuracy and dependency. Information is automatically updated every 3 minutes allowing the driver to monitor whether the traffic situation is improving or worsening. The system also recommends for or against alternative routes based on the potential time saving benefits. Surround-view. Optional Surround-view offers the driver a bird s-eye-view of the area around the vehicle, clearly shown in the Control Display providing extra confidence in tight manoeuvres and when parking.

Many systems are intelligently networked, allowing you to experience maximum driving pleasure in the utmost safety. Standard Drive Performance Control lets the driver choose between the standard Comfort mode, ECO PRO mode, which is geared towards effi ciency, and SPORT mode, which enables even more dynamic driving. ECO PRO adjusts the characteristics of the accelerator pedal and transmission as well as the heating/air conditioning settings to suit the driving situation. Optional Performance Control intervenes through engine control and targeted braking in corners, so more power is distributed to the outer wheels and less to the inner wheels. This means that the vehicle practically turns itself, thus increasing driving safety and comfort. Optional Variable Damper Control allows the driver to adapt the shock absorber characteristics to suit the driving situation, thus enhancing ride comfort and driving dynamics. Adds SPORT+ mode to Drive Performance Control for even more sporty driving enjoyment. Optional Variable Sport steering, with Servotronic, enables direct and agile handling with less steering effort. It reacts according to the steering angle, and independently of speed, to improve handling during sporty driving. It also makes parking more comfortable. xdrive. This system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road conditions, ensuring outstanding traction at all times. With xdrive and standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the vehicle remains directionally stable and on track. Split-second response times allow xdrive to distribute drive power fl exibly between the two axles for optimum grip. In this way, xdrive combines the advantages of four-wheel-drive (traction, directional stability and safety) with classic BMW agility.

Passenger cell: The system of beams and node connections in the functional body structure, combined with the strategic deployment of high-strength materials, delivers maximum passive safety in the event of front, side or rear crashes. Airbags are one of the passive safety components in a BMW. Driver and front passenger airbags, as well as the side airbags integrated into the front seat backrests, provide strategic protection. Run-flat tyres (standard for 18" tyres and above) have reinforced side walls that prevent tyres collapsing or loosening if the air pressure drops. Tyre Pressure Monitoring notifies the driver of loss of pressure signalled by a three-level warning strategy. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) continually assesses the vehicle s movements and optimises directional stability and traction by intervening in engine and brake management. This makes it much easier to control the vehicle, even on difficult surfaces, actively increasing driving safety. Multi-faceted functionality. Singular safety. The BMW X3 offers a wide spectrum of cutting-edge safety systems. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), for example, can detect the onset of a loss of traction and prevents the vehicle from veering off course. There are also the optional Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution for increased comfort and safety. The swivelling headlights follow the turns of the steering wheel to guarantee optimum visibility through every corner.
