We had two new guests in attendance, They were introduced by our Hospitality Chairman Bruce Andren who also presented them with a welcome package and welcome letter. Dan Gale who owns a 1970 Buick Stage one. The other guest was Ed Ricci who owns a 1955 Buick Special. Thank you for coming and we hope to see you at future meetings Our Guest speaker was Ray Brown who spoke on wood graining metal interiors of our older cars. Ray gave a detailed presentation of the process involved when he recently did the interior of his car. The demonstration showed us how we could do our own cars and save a considerable amount of money. Our next board meeting will be held at my house on Tuesday May third at 6:30 PM. Directions and map will be in this news letter. The first item on the agenda will be what type of car show if any we will be having. Anyone interested in voicing your thoughts please feel free to attend, and be prepared to volunteer to chair the show, or at least fill a key position. It is nice to see more interest in our tours. We have seven cars signed up for our March tour. The tours are the ones suggested by you and voted on by those present a the meeting. Lets keep up the good work. Now for some fun stuff You might be a redneck if The auto junk yard calls you to get spare parts. You might be a Redneck if you ve ever laid rubber while traveling in a funeral procession. 12 3

Old Business-None New Business Events Our trip to the Fullerton Arboretum is on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:00. See tours for further information. Saturday June 18, 2011 is our picnic at Irvine Regional Park, at 10:AM, see tours. The following people are working on their cars. John Duke s clock case in his car was cracked and caused a electrical short. He had to put in a new movement. Dan Gale exhaust is being changed from 2 to 2 1/2 on his 455 Buick Stage one Lee Wangerin went to The Bakersfield swap meet last weekend, and bought some parts for his International truck. Buick Special. Off goes the glass packs, in goes the Flowmasters, and it sounds great! The clutch just didn't seem right, so the trans came out, had it rebuilt, and the clutch was reinstalled properly. One day the Pertronix ignition went out because my 17- year-old left the ignition key in Accessory mode overnight. MSD ignition replaces the Pertronix. If you can see from the pictures, the interior was not correct Skylark material when I got this. This car being blue, I could get blue seat covers for a bench seat. I found a set of '65 bucket seats & was able to get the correct blue covers. While the old seat covers were off, I had the seat frame Sandblasted and painted with Rustoleum Black. While the seats were out, insulation was installed On the floorboard. Kick panels were re-carpeted with the correct color as well as speakers installed. Pioneer stereo installed in the glovebox. Custom console was made with the same fabric. On a lot of car trips with other Buicks and classic cars, I couldn't go much faster than 60 mph. The rear end was only a 323, so in went a 278 posi. The tires were 205/60/15 and replaced in the Front with 215/65/15 red line tires from Diamondback, and in the rear went 225/7015. What a difference. Can now cruise at mph with no problem. The previous owner installed a flex-fan for the radiator. Have heard numerous bad stories about how Unsafe flex-fans were, off it went and a new electric fan was installed. Had no problem driving to Colorado Springs for the BCA Nationals and back home to Seal Beach, CA. The car drives straight, it's fun to drive, and gets a lot of thumbs-up. Yours Truly, John Dyke BMD #95 Thank you John for this article 11 Full credit for the pictures goes to Rich Truesdell
5 Back in my high school days, I drove a Silver Cloud 1964 Buick Skylark with black vinyl bucket seats. It was a 300 C.1. with a 2-barrel (thanks, Dad) and a 4-speed transmission. Drove it for 4 years, then traded it in for a 1968 Corvette, 427/390 hp, 4-speed, of course. Back in 2004, I purchased a 1970 Skylark Custom, which I will do an article shortly. This car was a Fixer- upper. After about 1 year of having the '70 there was a '64 Skylark for sale in BCA's Bugle. It actually had a 4-speed trans as well. It took me about 2 months to get the courage to ask my wife If I could have a second "old" car in the garage. No problem, you've been talking about the '64 since we were married. So in August of 2005, I called the seller who lived in the Sacramento area, and he informed me that I was No.2 on the buyer list. First guy, apparently couldn't come up with the funds, so I bought a Round-trip ticket LAX-SAC. The owner picked me up in the '64, drove it around town, to his house, I Checked it out. After looking it over, the motor was rebuilt, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. Owner said it was good enough to drive back to LA (400 miles), so I did after spending the night in Modesto with my college roommate and his wife. The car ran good. It just needed lots of little things done my way. Apparently, two owners prior, a Buick junk yard owner, said this car sat in storage for about 10 years because it was his project car. Fearful of rusted gas in the tank, I decided to replace the gas tank as well as replacing the old Sending unit. The old one was pretty bad. The brakes were horrible, and in went power disc front brakes. It had no power steering, so a used power steering unit was installed from a '65 ' 10 Ed Ricci has a 1955 Buick Special that he bought last winter and is having fun with it. Larry Minery is working on his 1955 Roadmaster, and its still giving him problems and he can t figure out what s wrong with it. Father Doug Cook gave him a source for the repair of his differential. Sam Engle has seat belts that have to be put in, his break lights arn t working to good, and has a problem with the timing gears and chain. Bruce Andren is cleaning out his garage to make room for doing other projects in his garage. Garry Toulson hasen t had time to due much, since his trip to New Zealand to see his son. He has a battery that needs replacing in one of his cars. Richard Brewbaker, say s that nothing has changed, and he has given his 1957 Ford Thunderbird to a family member. Eddie Rusnak is having her 1957 Ford Thunderbird restored by Sheridan, and she just goes and lookes at the progress now and then. She says she knows it will come out beautifully and then she will probably be to afraid to drive it. Gary Martin has an exhaust leak on his Riviera. Any suggestions? Some exhaust manifolds came out without gaskets. Maybe he will have it surfaced by milling it. Guest Speaker Is Ray Brown, who will be talking about wood graining metal dashboards. Base coat, Pattern, Tonner and clear coat. The Dashboard came out beautiful. You can get the process at www/woodgraining.com The 50/50 raffle was won by Dan Gale,He walked away with $22.00 Meeting 5
6 followed by the water pump a week later. Then, the valve lifters and fuel pump had to be replaced two weeks later. Then, I was told I needed a new carburetor! I didn't believe it, so I drove home (or tried to) with the new fuel pump and it died on me twice. So, back it went for the new carburetor! Between the rains, I was again having a great time behind the wheel! Then in early April, I noticed a little extra oil spot on the garage floor. (Yes, my wife's car is now parked outside!) The front seal of the transmission was the culprit. No better time to completely rebuild the trans- ' mission while it's apart.i have learned many things these past few months, met many new "car" people and spent more time and money that I could have imagined! What's worse is that it's now suffering from some serious engine problems. So, the odyssey continues, but I still look forward to getting back behind the wheel! Now for the rest of the story: The last part of the above article said that it was now suffering from some serious engine problems. Well dumb me, l'loaned The car out to my 16-year old son. He decided to take the car out for a test drive on the 605 Freeway and blew a rod, Big time. I went to about 5 different mechanics, engine rebuilders, etc. Only 1 out of the 5 was kind enough to find a Buick 350 long block and had it rebuilt. Guess who got the job? His name is Terry Berzenye of Specialized Street Rods in Huntington Beach. Last summer, he moved to Torrance and is still doing cars. While at Specialized in HB, I decided to have.the car beefed up a little bit. Terry installed an aluminum manifold intake from TA (Stage 1 ),a Comp Cam 268H, ceramic coated headers, Edelbrock Carb, radiator flushed out, MSD Ignition, front Disc brakes, master cylinder & booster, and of course, Flowmasters. Since this was all done about 3 years ago, I have had to take it. back a few times for minor repairs. The car is just a Delight to drive. It drives straight and runs beautifully. All it takes is time, patience, labor, and lots of money. 6 9
7 Hi fellow Modified Buick Fans! My name is John Dyke and I am the proud new, third owner of a 1970 Buick Skylark Custom. Back in high school I drove a 1964 Buick Skylark. It was silver with black vinyl bucket seats and had a manual 4- speed transmission. I drove it for about four years and, stupidly, traded it in for a 1968 Chevy Corvette Convertible (427); I just had to have the Vette! Well, that only lasted about three years before I had to get rid of it due to electrical problems. Ever since getting out of college and having a real job, I always dreamt of my '64 Skylark. I often wished that I kept it! My barber and his son restore older vintage cars for a hobby. He had been trying to get me to look at his 1965 Chevelle for a couple of years. I just could not get excited about the car or the $23, asking price. It was in late August of 2004 that his son decided to sell his 1970 Skylark with 87,500 original miles on the odometer. It even had air conditioning, unlike my '64. I pretty much jumped at the opportunity after taking it out for a test drive. The 350 engine seemed to run well, and everything worked like it was supposed to (although the sounds coming from the AM radio needed improvement). The exterior "Sea Mist Green" paint really needed help, but the black interior was in excellent condition. My wife gave me the OK saying "You've been talking about it for a long time, go for it!" So, my new Skylark odyssey was about to begin! I set out to take care of the obvious items needing attention. The AlC was rebuilt, wheels aligned and it was given a tune-up that included a new distributor cap. I had stereo installed in the glove compartment so as to avoid changing the stock look of the dash. The new paint job (same Sea Mist Green) took forever, but in the process I had the vinyl top. I couldn't wait to get back behind the wheel! That would only last about 5 weeks! By the end of December 2004 the list of repairs just kept growing! The power brake booster and and master cylinder went out at the same time, 8 7
