1 2017 Berkshire Mall Pinewood Derby Guidebook And Registration Material Hosted by Cacoosing District Event Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017 Location: Berkshire Mall Center Court Open to all Lion Cubs, Tiger Cubs, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Plus a Race for Friends & Siblings, along with Outlaw classes for Boy Scouts/Venturers and Adults THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD RAIN, SNOW, OR SHINE. NO ALTERNATE DATE WILL BE SET.

2 Dear Scout Unit Leaders: We are pleased to announce the Berkshire Mall Pinewood Derby for This is going to bring Pinewood Derby racing to all Scouts & Scouters in a grand arena! This event will provide exposure for the great things Scouting has to offer into the public eye and allow the Scouts to participate on a larger level than just his own unit. We are very excited for this event and happy to have the Berkshire Mall hosting the event for the Scouting again this year. Please take time to read the attached Guidebook as it will hopefully answer most of the questions you may have regarding the event. This Guidebook should be shared with all Parents and Den Leaders so that they also understand the event. Pre-registration is highly encouraged but not required. Pre-registration will allow us to have a better idea of how many Scouts and Scouters we will have in each class and assist with the registration process on the day of the event. So please encourage anyone who wishes to participate to pre-register. Registration can be done individually or as a unit. You can use the attached form or register online at Included in the Guidebook is a registration form as well as a roster of participants, please see that both are turned in when registering for the Derby. Don t be afraid to ask question prior to the event. Remember, this event is intended to be a fun day for your Cub Scout. Good sportsmanship and a degree of patience are expected and appreciated. The boys and others in attendance are looking to you to be a positive role model. Any questions or concerns during or after the race can be handled in accordance with the Scout Law. While all Cub & Webelo cars will be raced together, individual times will be recorded and the best times within each rank will earn trophies. Friends & Siblings Race After Cub Race. Registration/check in no later than 11:00 am Same rules at Cub Scouts Outlaw Class (Youth & Adult) After Friends & Siblings Race. See rules on page 8 New Traveling Trophy (the Herbie Cup) to be Awarded (must be returned for next year s race) We are working on other prizes as well Place: Berkshire Mall Center Court, Wyomissing, PA Basic Information THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS Wednesday, February 23, 2017 BY 5:00 PM AT THE HAWK MOUNTAIN COUNCIL, BEAVER FAMILY SERVICE CENTER. REGISTRATIONS RECEIVED AFTER THE DEADLINE WILL BE ASSESSED A $1.00 PER PERSON LATE FEE AND ACCEPTED ON A SPACE AVAILABLE BASIS. 1. Fee for the event is $5.00 per person. Register by using the attached Registration form or online. The fee includes an event patch, door prize entry, and insurance fee. This does not include a Pinewood Derby Kit, these must be purchased on your own. 2. For emergency reasons, we require that at least 2 adult leaders or a parent remain on Mall Property during the event. 3. Patches and any other items will be given to adult leaders or parent during the event, at the registration area. 4. No Scouts, adult leaders, or parents will be permitted in the track area when races are being run. All cars will be handled, placed on the track and returned from the finish line to the start line by assigned volunteers. 5. Only registered Scouts are allowed to register a car for racing in the Cub and Youth Outlaw classes. Any adult Scouter or parent/guardian can register a car in the Adult Outlaw class. 6. A designated Pit Area will be available to work on cars prior to check in and between qualification heats and Final Race (only dry lubricant may be applied). Trophies will be given for the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Place in each class. Certificates will be given for many categories like Best in Show, Most Creative, Best Scout Theme, and many more. The fastest car from the Cub class will be prominently displayed on next year s event patch and/or CSP.

4 Pinewood Derby Car Regulations for Cubs & Webelos (and Friends & Siblings): Please read these regulations and instructions before building your car. Cars should be built by the Cub Scouts with some adult guidance. Any technical assistance should be fully explained to the Cub Scout so that he can use that knowledge in future projects. We will be following the Standard Pinewood Derby Rules and Specifications (included with kit) Car Specifications: 1. Width 2 3/4 Length 7 Weight Not over 5 ounces 2. Width between wheels 1 3/4 3. Bottom clearance between car and track 3/8 4. The wheelbase (distance between front & rear axles, center to center) may not be from the kit body distance of 4 3/8, 5. Overall Height from bottom or wheels to top of the car less than 3 1/2 (this allows clearance of electronic timing gates) 6. Since the starting pins are round, minimum width of front of car is ½ Regulations for Cubs: 1. Only Official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby (BSA) wheels and axles are permitted. This includes the colored BSA wheel. a. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. b. Cars shall not ride on springs. c. Axles may be lightly filed, sanded, & polished, this is the only axel modification allowed. i. Nail heads from the axles must be in full view. d. Wheels may be lightly sanded & polished, this is the only wheel modification allowed. i. NO honing or cutting of wheels will be allowed. ii. BSA markings & side tread must remain and may not be altered. 2. Details such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, weight, and height specifications. 3. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices. 4. Each car must pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official check-in period to make adjustments. 5. All cars will be impounded and take to a staging area once check in is completed. 6. ONLY Dry lubricants (graphite, Teflon, etc.) are allowed & should be applied prior to check in (in the designated Pit Area). If any evidence or suspicion of the use of wet lubricants will result in disqualification from the race, no exceptions as the use of wet lubricants will cause damage to the track. Ground Rules: 1. The reading of the Official Race Scale (the scale provided by the Derby Committee) will be considered FINAL! No other scale can be used. In the event the car is overweight the participant will be able to remove weight from the car to get it to pass inspection on the Official Race Scale, if the car is not able to pass weight check in on the Official Race Scale it will be disqualified from the race. 2. If a car jumps off track, the heat will be rerun. If the same car jumps off a second time, it will automatically lose that heat. Continued

5 Ground Rules (continued): 3. If a car leaves its lane & interferes with another car, the heat will be rerun. If the same car leaves its lane & interferes with another car a second time, the heat will be rerun without the interfering car. The interfering car will automatically lose that heat. 4. If a car has a mechanical problem and a repair can be accomplished within 5 minutes, the heat will be rerun. If repairs cannot be made within 5 minutes the car will automatically lose the heat. 5. If a car becomes damaged, a parent or guardian will be allowed in the pit area to make repairs. Once the car has been repaired, it will be re-inspected and re-weighed. 6. No scouts, adult leaders, or parent/guardian will be allowed at the track area. Inspections & Disputes: 1. Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Team (Team designated by the Derby Committee) before it may compete. 2. The Inspection Team has the right to disqualify any cars, which do not meet the regulations. Car owners will be informed of the violations and given a chance to modify the car to meet the regulations. 3. Ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member of the audience will be grounds for expulsion form the derby and/or race area.

8 Pinewood Outlaw rules (for Scouts & Adults): Open to any registered Scout over 10 and any adult. There will be 2 sub-classes: and 18+. The official PWD wood block MUST be used and be an integral part of the car. The block cannot simply ride on top of another chassis. No other parts from the PWD kit are required, but may be used. As with regular PWDs, no liquid lubricants are allowed. This is to avoid creating a mess on the track. Graphite and other non-liquid lubricants are allowed. No combustibles, liquid or otherwise, are allowed. No model rocket engines, fireworks or other propellants that combust are allowed. Non-combusting propellants are allowed. CO2, compressed air, etc. are OK but should be very firmly secured to the car and have a means to trigger/disable them. At the time of check-in, the tech inspector reserves the right to refuse any car re: safety concerns. It is highly encouraged that all propellant-driven cars be test-run before the day of the race. The greatest concern is the car or its parts leaving the track. Cars using electrical power sources must have an on/off switch besides the trigger mechanism if one is used. This is for the safety of those transporting the cars before and after the round. Cars should be designed so that they will ride on any PWD track, regardless of design. Whether a center- or outer-guided track, the car should be the same width and have the same ground clearance as the standard kit when built using the axle slots. Wheelbase and height are unrestricted, unless the track has a scoring system at the end that limits height. Every effort will be made to minimize the effect of such a timing system thus allowing for taller cars.
