FAILURE TO CHECK-IN BY THE ASSIGNED TIME WILL RESULT IN DISSQUALIFICATION. 1

2 Please read these rules before building your car! The District Pinewood Derby race is open to the top 3 places in each rank from all packs in Creek River District. The main objectives of the PWD are to: 1. Provide an opportunity for Akela-Scout interaction on a competitive project 2. Promote good sportsmanship among the scouts and the adults 3. Provide the scouts with a familiarity with basic woodworking and model building skills 4. Provide a healthy competitive environment between the scouts As such, the cars must be built by the Scout racing them, with minimal adult guidance and assistance, as appropriate for the scout s age. Any technical assistance should be fully explained to the scout so that the scout learns from the experience. In support of these objectives, the following rules will be enforced: Registration: - Each driver must have finished in the top 3 in their rank at their Pack race. A registration form, attached, must be completed by the Pack and submitted by March 5 th, 2018 via to the race director. - A registration fee of $7 per scout may be paid by the Pack (one Pack check). - Individual scouts will be able to pay prior to the beginning of registration on race day. Individual Race day payment must be $7 cash only payment. Registration forms must still be submitted. - Each car must register and pass inspection by race officials before it may compete. At registration, if a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for the failure and given until the end of the registration period to make necessary adjustments. - Cars may be inspected repeatedly as time permits, but not at the expense of other registering drivers. After final inspection approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged. - Race officials may rule on a car s worthiness to compete at any time when the fairness of the race may be jeopardized by the discovery of a car design or build concern. - Due to limitation on the timing software, it is not possible to add a late arrival to the race order, therefore it is recommended that you arrive early to the event. Car Design and Construction: - Official BSA Pinewood Derby kits (block, wheels, and axles from it number 17006) is recommended used to build cars for this race. Commercial kits, blocks, or pre-cut cars are allowed, but the kits have the Official Boy Scouts of America Hologram stick on it. - Official BSA colored wheels may be used in place of the wheels provided in the kit. - The car must be built predominantly by the scout, as age appropriate. Adult assistance may be provided, but should be minimized. Cars that are obviously built by adults will be disqualified. 2

3 Car Specifications: Width No wider than 2-3/4 Length No longer than 7 Weight Not over 5 oz. Width No less than 1-3/4 Height No taller than 6 Bottom clearance between car and track No less than 3/8 The car may only be powered by gravity, with no starting devices. Wheels: Only official BSA Pinewood Derby wheels are allowed. The wheels in the kit, or optional colored wheels may be used. No wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are allowed. The wheels may not be lightened or have their shape changed, however light sanding to remove injection molding burrs is allowed. Axles: Only official BSA Pinewood Derby nails are allowed. The nails may be sanded to remove burrs. Wheel placement on the car is open, however the car must conform to the 7 overall length and the wheel placement must ensure the car stays in its lane and does not interfere with other competitors. - Only dry lubricant, i.e. graphite or Teflon powder, is allowed. Cars found with liquid lubricant will not be allowed to race, as this could damage the track and/or timing equipment. All lubricant must be applied prior to registration, and must be done outside of the building. Front of Car: No part of the car may protrude past the starting gate post. If a car does not comply with this rule, it will be allowed to race backwards, assuming this makes the car compliant with the rule. Accessories: Details, such as a steering wheel or driver, may be added to the car, provided that the overall size of the car still complies with the maximum dimensions and weight. All accessories must be fixed such that they do not move during the race. Items that fall of the car during the race may NOT be reattached. THE CREEK RIVER DISTRICT PWD CHAIRPERSON HAS FINAL SAY! 3

4 Race Format: Unless otherwise announced prior to the start of racing: 1. Racers will compete on a 4-lane aluminum track using computerized timing. 2. Each rank will compete separately. 3. Winners will be determined by the fastest average time for all their races. 4. All racers will have the same number of races on each lane of the track. - Only race officials will be allowed in the area immediately surrounding the track, except for the drivers under the direction of race officials. - Drivers must race their own car, and will move their car from the pit area to the start line. - After the race, they will retrieve their car and either return it the pits or to the starting line, as directed by race officials. Upcoming races and drivers will be displayed on a screen. Drivers must be present to race their car on schedule. Cars may not be altered after registration. If a car is damaged, racers will be allowed one repair during the race provided the repair is completed in time for the racer to compete in their next scheduled heat. Repaired cars must be re-inspected before racing. Failure to compete in a race will result in a default time of seconds for that race. Prizes: Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each rank. 4

Approx 2 miles down on the left will be Brothersville Road. Turn left on Brotherville Road. Turn right onto Church St. Church parking lot on the right across from the church.
