2 Pinewood Derby 101 What is the Pinewood Derby? Every scout creates a pinewood derby race car using the supplied kit Scouts will race their cars in a number of heats based on the number of entries, generally four or eight. Winner is determined by the Stearn s method, a chaotic-rotation method with results in an average time for each contestant. The lowest average time wins. Trophies are awarded for the top five finishers, who also move on to compete at the District race.

3 Pinewood Derby 101 What is Pinewood Derby? More Importantly The derby provides an opportunity for SCOUTS to work with their parent helpers to build something that they can be proud of.

4 Pinewood Derby 101 The Rules

5 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations Entries for the Pack 59 Pinewood Derby shall comply with the following rules and regulations as approved by the Pack Committee. Only Cub Scouts who are BSA registered as an active Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, or Arrow of Light scout at the time of the Pinewood Derby shall be allowed to enter. All participants, parents, and spectators shall display appropriate sportsmanship conduct throughout the duration of the event. A new car shall be built each year from an official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kit using all nine pieces (wood block, four nails, & four wheels). Only official BSA approved replacement parts shall be permitted.

6 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations Each car shall comply with the following specifications: Maximum width: 2 & 3/4" Maximum Length: 7" Maximum Weight: grams Minimum Width between Wheels: 1 & 3/4" Default Wheel Base: 4 & 3/16 Maximum Wheel Base: 4 & 11/16 Minimum Wheel Base: 3 & 11/16 Minimum Bottom Clearance: 3/8"

7 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations Wheel specifications: Wheels shall not extend beyond the car body in both the front and rear Wheels may be lightly sanded to provide a true round circle Sanded wheels must retain as near as possible the original width, diameter, tread thickness, and flat rolling surface No purposely thinned wheels will be allowed The BSA Logo must remain as-is on both the inside and outside of each wheel No H or A shaping will be allowed to reduce the surface of the wheels No attachments or adhesives will be allowed on the surface of the wheels

8 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations Axle specifications: Axle nails may be filed or polished and lubricated with dry graphite only Use of the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Axle Guard is permitted Solid axles are not permitted A small hole must be drilled between the axle nails to verify solid axles are not used Other specifications: The front edge of the car body must make contact with the starting post at 3/8 in from the track center guide No body shape is permissible to allow a start advantage off the starting post Weights must be non-movable and securely fixed to the car Spacer bearings, washers, bushings, and springs are prohibited

9 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations Car Inspection: Each car will be placed in a checking device to verify compliance with all dimensional specifications Each car will be placed on a flat surface to verify the entire width of all four wheels make simultaneous contact Each car axel will be inspected to ensure only approved lubricate is used

10 Pack 59 Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations A small numbered sticker will be placed on each car after passing inspection and is registered. No additional work or repairs will be permitted without the consent of the inspection committee. (This includes lubrication, loose wheels and axles, etc.). Any car discovered to be in violation of race rules during the race event are subject to disqualification. No car will be allowed to enter unless the Cub Scout owning the car is present at the race. A Cub Scout will be allowed 15 seconds to place his car on the starting line. All decisions made by the judges are final.

17 Pinewood Derby 101 Step by step Step 2 Plan and Build Make some drawings and sketches of your car. Sketch out your drawings on the wood block. Shape the car using small saws and tools. Adult partners can help by using power tools. Use sand paper to smooth out the car. Paint and decals

18 Pinewood Derby 101 Step by Step Step 3 RACE Racing against other cars is probably the most exciting part of the experience, at least for the parents. Scouts will have a blast, cheering on their dens and friends and racing. No matter if you win or loose, you will have a great time!!
