2 NEWSLETTER Presidents Message, June 2012 By Scott Harvieux Hi everyone! First of all, I want to thank all those who participated and helped out at the NNL. The total number of models was 380, which was up from last year! Also, Congratulations to the Top Ten winners! Especially our buddy Mike Klessig, from Milwaukee, for winning the RPM Best Competition Vehicle. As we hit summertime and the low point of model building season, I hope you are all staying busy doing stuff outside. Most of us are probably looking forward to all the various car shows around our area. Hell, there is at least one every weekend! Also, if you're interested, a little write-up for the newsletter or website about the event you attended would be welcome material for Jim or Don! Memories From the Back to the Fifties Show (circa mid to late 1990s): I believe it was on the Saturday of this iconic Twin Cities event that I called Tom Thoren and asked if he wanted to attend the show that day. Since it always gets insanely crowded, I asked him if he wanted to go early to avoid the rush. He agreed and I met him at his house and he drove us in his two-toned green 1956 Chevy. His son and daughter, in their mid-teens at that time, also came along. After a couple of hours, my cheeks were sore from laughing so much! (As they often do in Tom's presence.) This event was the first time we ever saw Car Testicles. (You know, when someone takes a women's pantyhose leg, places two oranges in it, and hangs this package from the rear undercarriage!) Of course, knowing Tom and me, you can imagine the embellishments we thought of, such as: winding blue electrical wire around the oranges to simulate veins, or frozen peas to make green warts etc.. As funny as this all was, and typical of Tom and I, it was nothing compared to what was about to conspire. As we were inside the grandstand, I spotted Mike the Nerd carrying his light blue cosmetic case and all (Since most of you are old time Twin City model builders I won't bother to explain, for you know EXACTLY who I am talking about! And those who don't can only imagine!) Like a dumb ass, I said to Tom, "Let's go say 'Hi'." Well, you know what happened next, don t you? He followed us around for the next hour or two, taking waaaaaay too much time gawking and bothering the people in booths and by their cars. Then finally, Tony (Tom's son) said, Let's ditch this sucker. So as Mike was pestering a car owner along one of the streets next to the grandstand, we took off, running at the speed of light! (Tom and I were much thinner back then.) We crouched down below the height of the open car hoods, and sprinted all the way to the parking area. All four of us were laughing so hard that I think we gave ourselves hernias! As we looked back into the crowd we did not see him following so we considered it a success. In fact, I think until this very day Mike is still standing there, wondering where we went! That s all I got for you this month. I will see you at the meeting!! PAGE 2

3 On The Table, by Mark Rollie This month was the Theme of Themes, to showcase a set of cars that had something in common, whether it be a sponsor, type of car, manufacturer, class, or anything else that could tie them together. Some themes were quite obvious, others may have needed a little explanation. Bob Knudsen began the show with his set of neat old Monogram cars, which Larry the Table Guy introduced as buggies (at least he didn t say jalopies!). All originals and not revamped reissues, with the Green Hornet being Bob s very first model car build. Next were the Red Chariot, Black Widow, Blue Beetle, and Lil T. Most of these were box stock, with the Lil T receiving some extra detailing. Jim Allen brought in a Revell 69 Camaro, a build that was about to be mailed off to his brother. Corvette wheels were used, an auto tranny was installed, and Testors Chevy Flame Red finished it off. Jim s next car was a Hasegawa 57 Ferrari Testarossa, which Jim wired the engine for extra detail. The first color coat used MCW red paint, which wrinkled up when the Tamiya clear went over it. Chris Vick brought in 3 of his Wood Bros cars, made up of an 61 Starliner resin kit, an AMT 66 Fairlane, and a 75 David Pearson car that used a resin body and Johan chassis. Bob Maderich started off with two Target-sponsored Indy cars, the first being a 98 CART Revell kit that was box stock, and the 2 nd car being a Chris Edsel resin kit. Next for Bob were two Pennzoil-sponsored Indy cars, the first being a Jim Hall car from Formula Models, and the 2 nd being AMT s Indy racer which Bob doesn t have very many kind words about. After that were Bob s two Castrol-sponsored cars, a Tamiya 94 Toyota Corolla rally car, and the 2 nd a Tamiya Toyota Supra. Eric Zabel brought in 3 fuel altereds that have graced the tables before, the Pure Hell, Winged Express, and Sullivan Fiat. Eric also brought in a Tamiya Yamaha YZR500, an OOB build enhanced by aftermarket decals, and his just-finished Revell 49 Merc, on which he lowered the stance, gave it poseable wheels, and painted flames on the body rather than use decals for a super-sharp appearance.! 4 On The Table, Part 2 by Bob Maderich Cameron gave us three Porsches from his collection. They were all Tamiya kits representing LeMans cars. Specifically, he had a 935 from 1976, a 936 from 1977, and a 936 from John Muneoz graced us with a Japanese Touring car, a Nissan R34 to be exact. He built this box-stock using the Tamiya kit, their paint, and adorned with Calsonic markings. It was on a very cool base. (bought or made, John?) Bill Read had the new Steve Kinser Sprint car in progress, next to his impressive line of Peugeot 206 rally cars. All were built from the excellent Tamiya kit and represented cars from 1999 to The last one, a privateer entry by Didier Auriol was particularly stunning. Larry Reasland, our newest member, put down three very nice stock cars for us. They were a 1989 T-Bird (ASA) car driven by Jeff Neil, a 1990 T-Bird of Alan Kulwicki, and the 2001 rookie car of Kevin Harvick. All were fully detailed out, and featured posable steering. Jim Mulligan brought the RED BRIGADE, his three red sports cars from the 1960's. Two older builds, the Cheetah and the Cobra Daytona coupe were built from the Harold Bradford kits. His newest car was the Scuderia Fillipinetti 1969 Ford GT-40. Jim started with the Fujimi kit and added LOTS of aftermarket stuff to this lovely build. (Harold's engine, turned aluminum rims, VRM decals, etc.)! PAGE 4

5 Featured Builder Toby Halliday Make & Model of Vehicle 64 Dodge 330 Kit Manufacturer Lindberg Model of the Month Our June model of the month comes from Toby Halliday. This Dodge is the Lindberg kit with Tamiya X-1 Black acrylic, and Testors clear lacquer sprayed through the airbrush. It features Fred Cady "Fugitive" decals, and a MCG photo-etch set. The interior includes resin seats and brackets from Comp Resin's, and the engine has resin carb's, plug boots, and distributor cap from Replica's and Miniatures. There is also a fair amount of scratch built parts, and full wiring and throttle linkage. The tires were sourced from the parts box, and the coveted zero-offset front rims were donated to the project by Bob Halliday. Toby spent a little over a year of on and off building on the Dodge. He states that there are some fit issues with the kit, especially with the front grill/bumper assembly. With a little work on the grill, and correcting of the stance, a fairly accurate super stocker can be built though. The inspiration for the project came from a love of the mid-sixties Dodges, and a need for a body to practice his airbrushing technique. If you get a chance to see it, let your mind wander back to 1964 and hear the roar of the race Hemi. That is of course; if you can remember 1964!! PAGE 5

6 NNL North Report Congrats to all! We had a great NNL this year with over 350 models on the table. Saw lots of new folks, had a great vendor turnout, and as usual, a very nice raffle. Thanks to all the helpers who gave of their time to make the show a success. Special kudos to Jim Mulligan, Jim Johnson and Jim Kampmann (our Three Jim's) for being Top Ten recipients. Our "Best Competition" award was one of the closest races in years, with Mike Klessig taking the prize with his 1/12 Lola T-70. Looking forward to next year's show, same time, same place.! PAGE 6
