HillSpeed Digital Speedometer Model HUD 13 Operating Instructions & Warranty
General Information The HUD 13 digital speedometer is not waterproof or water resistant. It should not be installed or operated in any location which will be exposed to water or moisture. The HUD 13 digital speedometer is designed for use in: light vehicles made and released from 2006 on (petrol engines) and 2007 on (diesel engines). heavy vehicles which conform to the J1939 data protocol. The HUD 13 digital speedometer can be operated either: without calibration. The speed displayed will be the unmodified vehicle s true speed. with calibration where the vehicle has been modified or where the speed required to be displayed is the same as the vehicle s in-built speedometer. The method for Calibration is shown in the Installation Instructions. Standard Operation The speedometer is automatically activated when the vehicle ignition is switched on. It may take up to 45 seconds for the speedometer to start up and commence displaying the vehicle speed. When the vehicle is driven normally the road speed will be indicated either in kilometres per hour (kph; the standard factory pre-set) or miles per hour (mph) on the Display. When the ignition is switched off, the speedometer automatically goes into sleep mode and the Display will switch off. This may take up to 45 seconds. The method for changing the speed display from kph to mph (and mph to kph) is set out in a following section of these instructions. Some light vehicles incorporate energy saving systems which turn off the vehicle engine in situations where it is stopped, such as at traffic lights or in heavy traffic. In these vehicles the speedometer will turn off as follows: when the engine has been stopped for 30 seconds, the speedometer display will commence flashing and continue to flash for 15 seconds. after this the display will turn off but the speedometer will remain active for another 2 minutes. if the engine restarts within this time the speedometer will immediately turn on its display and continue to operate. if the engine does not restart within this time (either due to a long delay or when the vehicle has been turned off) the speedometer will turn off. This turn off method may also operate on some other vehicles which do not have energy saving systems. Over Speed Warning System The speedometer has an Over Speed Warning System which allows a preferred maximum speed to be set. When a preferred maximum speed has been set, there are 2 alarms available to
(Continued) warn when the preferred maximum speed is exceeded. These alarms are: Visual Over Speed Display: red LED lights on each side of the speed Display which are illuminated when the preferred maximum speed is exceeded. Audible Over Speed Display: an audible buzzer which sounds when the preferred maximum speed is exceeded. The alarms can be set to act together or individually. For the method of setting them refer to the Setting The Over Speed Displays section of these instructions. A buffer of +3 kph has been programmed into the Over Speed Warning System due to the difficulty of maintaining an exact speed of say 40 kph or 60 kph. At 3 kph above the maximum speed set (43 kph if the system is set to 40 kph), the Over Speed Alarms will be activated. They will remain on until the vehicle speed drops to less than 3 kph above the maximum speed set. Activating The Over Speed Warning System To activate the Over-Speed Warning System, legally drive the vehicle to the maximum speed preferred; for example 40 kph. Click the Switch. The speed display will change to A.oN and then back to the vehicle speed the first time this is done. On subsequent settings, the LED s on either side of the display will flash and the buzzer will sound briefly. With this setting, both the Visual and Audible Over Speed Displays are activated. This can be changed as described in the next section of these instructions. When the Over Speed Warning System is activated, the decimal point on the right hand side of the Display is illuminated. Setting The Over Speed Displays When the Over Speed Warning System has been turned on (and the Visual & Audible Over Speed Displays are activated), the displays can be set to different combinations. This should be done with the vehicle in a legal, level, safe stationary position, with neutral or park selected and with the parking brake applied. Press the Switch and hold it down continuously. After about 2 seconds the Display will change and commence a cycling sequence with displays of L.oN then b.on then O.FF then A.oN then S.dF then A.dF then I.oN then I.oF then Cal then back to L.oN etc. The LED s will flash and the buzzer will sound each time the display changes. To activate the different combinations of the Over Speed Displays do the following: for only the Visual Over Speed Display, release the Switch when the display is L.oN. The LED s will blink and the Display will change back to show speed. for only the Audible Over Speed Display, release the Switch when the display is b.on. The buzzer will sound and the Display will change back to show speed. for both the Audible and Visual Over Speed Displays, release the Switch when the display is A.oN. The buzzer will sound, the LED s will blink and the Display will change back to show speed.
(Continued) for no Over Speed Displays, release the Switch when the display is O.FF. The display will change back to show speed and the Over Speed Alarm system is no longer activated. Whichever selections are set for the Over Speed Warning System (preferred maximum speed and Over Speed Display selection) will be retained in the speedometer memory when the vehicle is turned off. When it is next turned on, the same settings will apply. Changing The Preferred Maximum Speed In The Over Speed Display System To set the Over Speed Warning System to another preferred maximum speed, legally drive at that speed, and click the Switch. The new preferred maximum speed is now set. The Over Speed Display selection previously made will be retained. Inverting the Speed Display Where the Display is installed on an overhead console in the vehicle, in an inverted position, the speed display can also be set to be inverted, using the following method. Press the Switch and hold it down continuously. After about 2 seconds the Display will change and commence a cycling sequence with displays of L.oN then b.on then O.FF then A.oN then S.dF then A.dF then I.oN then I.oF then Cal then back to L.oN etc. To change to an inverted display release the Switch when the Display is I.oN. The buzzer will sound, the LED s will blink and the Display will change to be inverted. To change from an inverted display release the Switch when the Display is I.oF. The buzzer will sound, the LED s will blink and the Display will change to be not inverted. Note that the decimal point displays do not invert. Changing The Speed Display from KPH to MPH (or MPH to KPH) The factory pre-set of kilometres per hour (kph) display can be changed to miles per hour display (mph) and back again using the following method. Press the Switch and hold it down continuously. After about 2 seconds the Display will change and commence a cycling sequence with displays of L.oN then b.on then O.FF then A.oN then S.dF then A.dF then I.oN then I.oF then Cal then back to L.oN etc. To change from kph to mph release the Switch when the Display is A.dF. The buzzer will sound, the LED s will blink and the Display will change back to show speed in miles per hour. To change from mph to kph release the Switch when the Display is S.dF. The buzzer will sound, the LED s will blink and the Display will show speed in kilometres per hour. When the Display is set to show speeds in mph, the decimal point between the first and second digits of the the Display is illuminated. Note that the speedometer display can be in different units from that on the vehicle speedometer. For example, the vehicle speedometer may display miles per hour and the HillSpeed
(Continued) speedometer can display kilometres per hour. We recommend that the vehicle and HillSpeed speedometers be set to display speed in the same units; ie both in miles per hour or both in kilometres per hour. Using Two Displays in the Same Vehicle Two HillSpeed speedometers can be installed in the same vehicle where there is a requirement for two separate additional speed displays. The second speedometer shows exactly the same information as the first speedometer and cannot be changed to different settings. This includes: calibration; it will show whatever speed (calibrated or not) is shown on the first speedometer. speed unit display (KPH or MPH). overspeed alarm settings. It will use the Over Speed Display Settings and speed set on the first speedometer. inverted display. Where the display on the first speedometer has been set to be inverted, the display on the second speedometer will also be automatically inverted. Moving the Speedometer to Another Vehicle When the speedometer is installed and started for the first time in a vehicle, it records and retains in its memory information about the on-board diagnostics (OBD) system being used in that vehicle. This information is unique to every vehicle. Because of this, if the speedometer is moved to a different vehicle, it needs to have the previous vehicle s information cleared and replaced. To do this, install the speedometer in the new vehicle as set out in the Installation Instructions. Hold down the Switch and start the vehicle engine. Continue to hold down the Switch until the Display turns on and then turns off. This should typically take seconds but may be up to 60 seconds. Release the Switch. Within 15 seconds the Display will show 0. This clears the previous vehicle information and records the current vehicle information. It also clears all user settings (over speed warning system settings, calibration, inverted display, MPH display) and restores the standard factory presets. This installation method needs to be done only the first time the engine is started with the speedometer installed in this vehicle. It is necessary to carry out this installation every time the speedometer is moved to a different vehicle, including where a speedometer has been used as a second speedometer and is now to be used as the primary speedometer. Other Information The displayed speed is updated twice per second. The speedometer contains a system which continually senses whether the vehicle engine is switched on. When it is not switched on the speedometer stays in a sleep mode so that it does not use battery power. If the vehicle is not being used for long periods of time (more than several months) we recommend that the speedometer be disconnected by unplugging it from the OBD II or J1939 socket in the vehicle. With the speedometer unplugged it will retain the Preferred Maximum Speed and Over Speed Display Settings indefinitely.
