June 2014, Volume 16, No. 6 The Camaro Z/28 Returns The 2014 Camaro Z/28 has returned as the most track-capable model in its history. Weighing 300 pounds less than the Camaro ZL1, the aerodynamically-optimized Camaro Z/28 accumulated 1,000 miles of testing on Germany s legendary Nürburgring road course, turning in a fastest lap of 7: Click to see the Camaro Z/28 in action. Weight savings on the Camaro Z/28 include: Elimination of the tire-inflator kit, except where it s required by law Removal of some interior sound deadener, as well as trunk carpet Use of a smaller, lighter battery Thinner rear window glass 3.2 mm vs. the standard 3.5 mm Elimination of High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and fog lights No air conditioning, except as part of the single option package (package includes air conditioning and six audio speakers). Powertrain The Camaro Z/28 is equipped with a 7.0-liter V8 engine (RPO LS7) that produces 505 horsepower and 481 lb.-ft. of torque. The only transmission available is the TREMEC (TR6060) 6-speed manual transmission. The V8 engine uses a unique open air box intake system featuring a K&N conical air filter. The air cleaner seals around the bottom of the hood, reducing the chance of recirculated hot air being drawn into the engine. 7.0-liter V8 engine (RPO LS7) continued on page 2 CONTENTS The Camaro Z28 Returns... 1 Wicker Bill Spoiler Installation... 3 Full-Size Trucks Exhaust System Conditions... 4 Liftgate or Liftglass Interference... 4 Proper Lifting of the ATS, CTS Sedan... 5 Inoperative Power or Memory Seats, Power Adjustable Pedals... 5 Radio Displays Alert Point Messages... 6 J A Angle Meter... 6 BCM Reprogramming for Unwanted Trunk Opening... 7 DTC Symptom Byte Documentation in Warranty Claims... 7 Door Striker Cover Installation... 7 Passive Keyless Entry Diagnostics Tips... 8 Pinched Instrument Panel Harness... 8 Rear Quarter Glass Area Wind Noise... 9 Wind Noise from Front of Vehicle Service Know-How Car Issues Fix It Right the First Time Truck Issues Fix It Right the First Time.. 11 Customer Care and Aftersales

The Camaro Z/28 Returns continued from page 1 The engine also uses a dry-sump oil system and is filled with 5W-30 Mobil 1 oil. Engine oil capacity is 10.0 qt. (9.5 L). The dry-sump system enables high lateral acceleration without a loss in oil pressure or delivery. TIP: Check the oil level only after the engine has thoroughly warmed up. After the engine is turned off, wait 5-15 minutes before checking the oil level for an accurate reading. Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a Torsen limited-slip differential featuring a helical gear set, rather than traditional clutch packs, for optimal traction. The Camaro Z/28 is equipped with Performance Track Management (PTM), a feature that tailors the performance of the Z/28 to match the driver s skills and driving conditions. This advanced system integrates steering effort calibrations, traction control, and stability control. Five driver-selectable PTM performance modes are available. Suspension 100% of the unsprung mass (suspension, wheels, tires and brake system) is unique for the Camaro Z/28 when compared to SS models. The front suspension includes double-ball joint multi-link struts, a direct-acting 25 mm solid stabilizer bar, progressive-rate coil springs and inverted monotube shock absorbers. The rear suspension incorporates a 4.5-link independent design with progressive-rate coil springs over monotube shock absorbers and a 26 mm solid stabilizer bar. The Camaro Z/28 is one of Spool-valve dampers the first production cars fitted with race-proven, spool-valve dampers (shock absorbers). These dampers allow four-way damping control, enabling precise tuning to both bump and rebound settings for high-speed and low-speed wheel motions. The wide tuning range also allows dramatically greater damper stiffness without a significant change in ride quality. Brakes and Tires The Camaro Z/28 is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix ventilated two-piece front and rear rotors. The large 394 x 36 mm front rotors are paired with six-piston calipers. The 390 x 32 mm rear rotors are paired with four-piston calipers. TIP: Due to the floating design of the brake rotor, the front brake rotor cannot be refinished. If the front brake rotor is found to be at or below the minimum specification, it must be replaced. Any brake system has a normal break-in period before optimum performance is realized. The Camaro Z/28 brakes are no different. If aggressive street braking is performed, it should be noted that some green fade may occur on subsequent stops. This will feel like longer than expected pedal travel for the desired deceleration. This is normal and considered part of the burnishing process. A subtle growl sound may be heard coming from the front or rear brakes during light brake apply. This is normal and part of having new carbon ceramic brakes. The condition can be eliminated by performing the Street High Performance Brake Burnishing Procedure. When brake pads have optimum burnish, there may be a white chalky appearance visible on the pad edge near the rotor surface. This will be more apparent on front pads. The Camaro Z/28 is equipped with Pirelli 305/30ZR19 PZero Trofeo R tires. These are competition-oriented tires that use a special tread pattern and compound. The wear performance and life of the tires will be markedly different than most tires. The Camaro Z/28 uses 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. Wheels are staggered: 19 x 11 inch aluminum (front) and 19 x 11.5 inch aluminum (rear). A special rim protector is built into each tire that puts rubber over the aluminum of the outer rim for protection when parking. Body Design A rim protector is built into each tire. The front fascia of the Camaro Z/28 has a large lower splitter to reduce front lift and force air through the larger lower grille. The larger openings, splitter and hood extractor all combine for a significant increase in cooling capacity for the powertrain. The front splitter is a large aero panel that is designed to withstand 250 pounds of downforce at its tip, enhancing cornering capability and high-speed stability. It is matched with an aero closeout panel under the front of the engine compartment. The Camaro Z/28 underbody incorporates a belly pan that also helps reduce front lift. The underbody belly pan must be removed before performing service work, including oil and filter changes. Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) Only hand washing of the Camaro Z/28 is recommended. Damage may occur to the tires, wheels, front fascia, and rockers if the vehicle is driven through an automatic carwash. Do not apply wax or polish to the flat black portion of the hood or extractors. If a vehicle is washed in a touch-less carwash: Do not attempt to use a car wash that has tracks that guide the vehicle through Do not attempt to use the car wash if there are locating features that protrude above the surface by more than 3 in. (75 mm) continued on page 3 2 June 2014

The Camaro Z/28 Returns continued from page 2 Use care when exiting the wash. As with any brake system, soaps or waxes found in the automatic carwash can spray onto the brakes. When this occurs, it may affect the vehicle s capability to stop or accelerate. Apply light brake pressure when exiting the wash The front splitter is shipped inside the vehicle from the assembly plant. Installation instructions are included with the front splitter and also can be found online in the appropriate Service Information. Remove the spring spacers from the front suspension and place them in the glove box for the customer. TIP: If the car is to be loaded on a trailer for any reason, the spacers need to be placed back in the front springs to obtain ground clearance. Thanks to Gary Kirrkamm and Ann Briedis Remove the spring spacers during PDI. Wicker Bill Spoiler Installation A new accessory for Camaros is the wicker bill spoiler (part number ), which adds up to 150 lbs. of downforce to the rear of the vehicle at high speeds. The wicker bill spoiler is compatible with the 2014 accessory wing spoiler (RPO SB3). It is not restricted to only Z/28 models. During installation of the wicker bill spoiler, the template should be lined up on the lower feature line of the Original Equipment (OE) spoiler to ensure a consistent gap at the top of the template to the top of the spoiler. Seven holes are drilled in the OE spoiler. Use a graduated drill bit due to the irregular hole size required for the M8 riv-nuts. The riv-nuts should easily slide in and out of the drilled holes. Install the M8 riv-nuts using the M8 riv-nut installation tool. The correct tool must be used to ensure proper installation of the riv-nuts. The riv-nut installation tool (BO MM-KIT) can be ordered by calling GM TOOLS ( ) or online using the Service Workbench link in GM GlobalConnect. Rubber grommets are placed over the M8 riv-nuts to prevent water intrusion. In addition, two rubber grommets are added to the decklid stops. For a copy of the complete installation instructions, refer to the Camaro Accessory Installation Manual available in the Service Information. Thanks to Ann Briedis Make sure there is a consistent gap at the top of the template to the top of the spoiler. Use a graduated drill bit to accommodate the M8 riv-nuts. Installed M8 riv-nuts June

Full-Size Trucks Exhaust System Conditions Two exhaust system noise conditions may be heard on some 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks equipped with the 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8 or 6.2L V8 engine (RPOs LV3, L83, L86) built prior to December 8, 2013 or on vehicles with a muffler Julian date of In addition, a vibration condition may be felt when Active Fuel Management engages. PEV in the open position The first noise condition is Rotate the PEV counterclockwise a rattle, buzz and/or pop (oil canning) noise heard coming from the exhaust system under different conditions. The exhaust system rattle can be diagnosed by tapping on the bottom of the muffler. The correction of the muffler pop or oil canning noise will require the replacement of the cold end or back half of the exhaust system. The second noise condition is a whistle noise heard coming from the muffler area of the exhaust system. To diagnose this condition, temporarily lock the Passive Exhaust Valve (PEV) in the open position. Equipped on all light-duty trucks, the Passive Exhaust Valve, located behind the muffler, acts as a broadband tuner in both V4 (Active Fuel Management) and V8 mode for a more refined sound. Rotate the Passive Exhaust Valve counterclockwise. For testing purposes only, install a 1/4" x 20 x 2 steel bolt, nut, lock washer and two large standard 1/4" x 1 outside diameter washers (body washer) in the Passive Exhaust Valve. If the condition is reduced or changes greatly in severity with the bolt installed, replace the exhaust system. The vibration condition may Install the steel bolt, washers and nut as shown be noticed in the seat or steering wheel when the truck engages V4 mode (Active Fuel Management). After verifying the condition, check the exhaust system for Ground Outs at the mounts and repair as necessary. For testing purposes only, install the bolt, washers and nut as described above. If the condition is reduced or changes greatly in severity, replace the exhaust system. Thanks to Peter Joslyn Liftgate or Liftglass Interference There may be a pop or scrape noise heard when the liftgate or liftglass is opened on some 2015 Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Yukon XL models built prior to March 11, In some cases, the power liftgate (if equipped) may reverse when opening. This condition may be caused by the liftgate spoiler contacting the roof. It is more noticeable with thermal expansion caused by the sun. Some vehicles are equipped with shims located between the left hinge and spoiler. If shims are present, remove them and reassemble. The complete spoiler does not need to be removed to access the shims. Shims located between the left hinge and spoiler After removing all of the spoiler attachment fasteners, close the liftglass and lift up on the spoiler to inspect for shims and remove them if they are present. Retest for the condition by parking the truck in the sun for a few hours. If the condition is not corrected by removing the shims, the spoiler will need to be replaced. Thanks to James Will 4 June 2014

Proper Lifting of the ATS, CTS Sedan When lifting the ATS and 2014 CTS sedan on a hoist, the vehicle should be lifted so that the hoist pads and/or lift arms do not contact the rocker panel molding. Each hoist pad must be located in the designated area in order to prevent any damage to the vehicle. In the front location, place the lift pads on the rocker outer panel weld flange. In the rear location, place the lift pads on the rocker outer panel rear cradle brace. Ensure the hoist pad is inside the rocker panel molding cut out area (notch). Damage may occur to the rocker panel molding where it contacts the lower front of the quarter panel (dog leg) if the rear hoist pad contacts the rocker panel molding and shifts the position of the molding, which may result in the paint peeling where it meets the step in the body panel. Thanks to Mark Gordon Correct hoist lift points Front hoist pad placement Rear hoist pad placement Rocker panel molding damage Inoperative Power or Memory Seat, Power Adjustable Pedals On some 2015 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL models, the driver's power seat or the memory seat functions may be inoperative. In addition, the power adjustable pedals (if equipped) may be inoperative. While performing diagnosis, check terminal tension at the left Instrument Panel fuse block (X51L) connector X1, terminal 27, with test probe J (VT). If the terminal is found to have poor tension, it will need to be replaced. The terminal is available from the Warranty Parts Center (WPC). The WPC part number is WPC751. Please fill out the WPC request form and submit. Since there is a very limited supply, it s requested that only the number of terminals required to repair the vehicle be ordered. Thanks to James Will Instrument Panel fuse block (X51L) connector X1, terminal 27 June

Radio Displays Alert Point Messages The radio of the 2014 Chevrolet SS may intermittently display one of several messages at the bottom of the radio screen, such as Camera Nearby, Railroad Crossing, or School Zone. The messages will only appear on the radio for several seconds while driving. These messages will be very difficult to reproduce. No DTCs will be set. These radio messages are referred to as Alert Points and they are displayed to alert the driver of the presence of various issues or zones surrounding the vehicle. The Camera Nearby message indicates the presence of a traffic camera that has been placed near an intersection. The Railroad Crossing message indicates the presence of a nearby set of railroad tracks that crosses a public road. The School Zone message indicates that the vehicle is traveling near an established school. This information originates from the software in the navigation portion of the radio. It is not related to the XM weather or traffic system features. Because it is a function of the navigation software, drivers may not be alerted to all cameras, railroad crossings, and/or school zones that may be present, depending on the current year's mapping data. Change the Alert Points setting in the Navigation menu. The Alert Points messages can be turned off by going into the Configuration and Navigation menus within the radio and deselecting the option. Please communicate to the customer that this condition is a normal operating characteristic of the vehicle. Thanks to Matt Bierlein UPDATE: J A Angle Meter Last month, TechLink covered the growing use of Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) fasteners, or sometimes referred to as Torque To Yield (TTY) fasteners. To achieve the proper specification when tightening TAY fasteners, the J Angle Meter or the J A Angle Meter should be used. The J A Angle Meter is designed for use with standard 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch square drive extensions, ratchets, or breaker bar handles, or for use with a 1/2-inch square drive click style torque wrench, approximately 1 inch to 1-1/4 inches (25 to 31 mm) in diameter. When turned J A Angle Meter on, the J A Angle Meter displays the last angle value entered. Press the power button to rotate A. Attachment location for 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch extension, ratchet or breaker bar handle B. Attachment location for click style torque wrench the display 90 degrees clockwise; continue pressing the power button until the display orientation is in the desired position. Use the up/down arrow buttons to set the desired angle value from degrees. When ready to measure angle, apply a slight force in the required direction of rotation to eliminate free-play in the socket, extension, and driver. Do not turn the bolt at this time. With free-play eliminated, press the Start button, and the meter will display WAIT, followed by TURN. When TURN is displayed, the meter is zeroed. Turn the driver until the desired angle is reached. While the meter is turned, a yellow bar is displayed that gets longer as the set angle is neared. Within 5 10 degrees of the set angle, the end of the yellow bar will turn red, and the meter will beep and flash when the angle is reached. The J A Angle Meter can be used on a ratchet handle when the fastener is in an area with limited access. To use this feature, after the meter is zeroed, and the ratchet is being turned, stop turning momentarily. The ratchet can be turned back, but the displayed angle will not change. At the end of the back-swing, stop momentarily again, and the meter will continue to increase the angle measured from this ratcheted point. The J A Angle Meter requires a AA battery. The J Angle Meter uses two #CR-2032 batteries. To replace the batteries, separate the front case from the back. The battery is located in a holder on the circuit board. 7 BCM Reprogramming for Unwanted Trunk Opening On some 2014 Cruze models built prior to February 28, 2014 and 2014 Sonic sedan models built prior to March 30, 2014, the trunk may open intermittently while the vehicle is parked without pressing any of the release buttons. This condition may be caused by the trunk release button on the Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (key fob) being pressed inadvertently while the transmitter is in the customer's pocket or purse. Although the trunk is unlatched while parked, the owner may not observe the trunk being open until the vehicle is driven. A Trunk Open message may be displayed in the Driver Information Center. The unwanted trunk opening condition was addressed earlier by installing a two shot relay requiring that the key fob trunk release button be pressed twice to open the trunk. Now, for 2014 model year vehicles, reprogramming the Body Control Module (BCM) will provide a press and hold trunk release function on the key fob. Prior model year vehicles still require the two shot relay (refer to #PI0924B). Press and Hold To correct the unwanted trunk opening condition, reprogram the BCM with the latest calibrations available on TIS2Web. The new calibration will change the amount of time required to hold the trunk release button on the key fob from 200ms, which is instant open, to a 1 second hold in order to execute a trunk release event. Refer to the BCM Programming and Setup procedure in the appropriate Service Information for programming information. Press Twice If the two shot relay was previously installed (refer to #PI0924B) to address the unwanted trunk opening condition, the trunk will not open as expected after BCM reprogramming because it now takes two 1-second presses of the key fob to open the trunk. The rear compartment relay must be changed back to a factory single press relay. This can be confirmed by investigating vehicle warranty history for labor operation After reprogramming the BCM for any reason, explain to customers that they now have the 1 second press and hold key fob function to open the trunk. Thanks to Steve Bruder DTC Symptom Byte Documentation in Warranty Claims When job cards are submitted for warranty claims on all GM passenger cars and light-duty trucks, DTC symptom byte information is required. When documenting DTC information, the DTC symptom byte needs to be included along with the module it was set in. Enter the DTC and symptom byte information in DTC Display screen with DTCs and symptom bytes the Cause section of the GWM claim. For example: B0014 0D (the first four characters are the DTC and the last two are the symptom byte). In GDS 2, click the Details button on the DTC Display screen to view the DTCs and symptom bytes. With the added technology within the vehicle, adding the symptom byte to the documentation helps to speed up the process and pinpoints the problem for the supplier and engineering when trying to determine the root cause of a vehicle condition. For further information, refer to section Details of Cause and Correction in the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual. In Canada, see c Details of Customer Concern, Cause of Failure and Correction. Thanks to Gary McCraw Door Striker Cover Installation Installation of the front door and rear door striker covers is part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process for uplevel 2015 Tahoe LTZ, Suburban LTZ, Yukon Denali and Escalade models. These covers are shipped with the vehicle from the assembly plant. Be sure not to install the striker covers incorrectly or backwards. The covers are installed correctly if the rounded side of the cover is positioned toward the outboard side of the vehicle. Thanks to James Will Position the cover with the rounded side toward the outboard side of the vehicle. June

Passive Keyless Entry Diagnostic Tips If one or more Passive Keyless Entry (RPO ATH) buttons, located on the outside door handles, of some 2015 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon models are not working or are intermittently working, there are several diagnostic tips to keep in mind. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (key fob) may not be properly located within the range of an antenna. The key fob needs to be within approximately one meter (approximately three feet) of the door handle where the passive entry button is being operated. The customer may not have completely pressed the door handle button. For example, pressing only the side of the button does not allow the switch to make contact and the system will not operate. In some cases, wearing gloves may contribute to this condition. In cold weather below 32 F (0 C), ice may form between the door handle and the button during car washes or thaw/freeze cycles. With this condition, the button or the bottom of the button may not move or only move slightly. The top of the button may move so it looks and feels as if the button is being pressed when it is not. Applying additional pressure and/or cycling the button multiple times will usually break up the ice and allow the system to operate normally. If the front door is fully open and the customer is trying to open the rear door, the rear door may not unlock and open because the key fob is out of range of the front door handle antenna. When the front door is fully opened, the antenna in the handle is far from the rear door and out of range. The unlock button on the key fob or door switch will need to be pressed to open the rear door(s). Passive Keyless Entry button on the door handle. If a door handle switch is suspected to be defective, it can be component tested. Measure the resistance between the door handle switch circuits. With the button released, the resistance should be infinite. With the button pressed, the resistance should not exceed 15 ohms. Do not replace the door handle for a condition that has not been duplicated unless switch resistance is outside of these specifications. Thanks to James Will Pinched Instrument Panel Harness Depending on vehicle options on some 2015 Escalade models, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra and Yukon models; and 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 models, any of the following conditions may be present: Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) inoperative Passive Entry and Passive Start inoperative No audio Touch screen inoperative Steering wheel controls inoperative BCM DTC B3101 (Keyless Entry Data Link Circuit) Instrument panel mounting bracket Radio and Human Machine Interface (HMI) DTC's U0028 (MOST Bus) and U0029 (MOST Bus Performance) These conditions may be caused by the instrument panel harness being pinched between the left instrument panel mounting bracket and the body. In many cases, the complete harness is not pinched and it may not be apparent. When inspecting for a pinched harness, make sure the harness can be moved freely away from the bracketto-body interface. To repair this condition, loosen the left instrument panel mounting bracket bolts and pull the harness free. Open the harness and repair any damaged wires as necessary. Thanks to Jim Will Instrument panel harness (B) may be pinched between the left I/P instrument panel mounting bracket (A) and the body. 8 June 2014

Rear Quarter Glass Area Wind Noise A wind whistle noise may be heard from the right or left rear quarter glass area on some 2015 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon models when driving at highway speeds of 60 mph (96 km/h) and up. The noise may be more noticeable with a cross wind. This condition may be caused by the fit of the exterior D pillar trim or the rear tail lamp assembly. D Pillar Trim Check the fit between the exterior D pillar trim and the rear quarter glass. Excessive urethane from the quarter glass installation may not allow the exterior D pillar trim to fit properly against the rear quarter glass, as shown below. Use a sharp knife to cut off the excessive urethane to allow the exterior D pillar trim to fit correctly against the rear quarter glass. Exterior D pillar trim and rear quarter glass Urethane from the quarter glass Cut any excessive urethane. Rear Tail Lamp Assembly Inspect the fit between the rear tail lamp assembly and the quarter panel. Install a 5mm X 5mm (3/16-inch X 3/16- inch) piece of closed cell foam tape along the entire length of the tail lamp assembly. Thanks to Jim Will Rear tail lamp assembly and quarter panel Apply foam tape along the tail lamp assembly. June

Wind Noise from Front of Vehicle On the 2014 Camaro equipped with the RS Package (RPO WRS), a whistle or howl noise may be heard coming from the front of the vehicle while driving at speeds of mph (64 96 km/h). It may be a difficult to narrow down the cause of the condition by taping off various body seams. The noise may be described as coming from the windshield area, but in most cases, it is not the source of the condition. The whistle noise may be caused by wind rushing over the various gaps around the headlamp capsules of the vehicle, which may produce a higher pitched wind noise when the car is driven at speeds of 40 mph (64 km/h) and greater. It may be difficult for some technicians to hear the noise. Depending on the direction and severity of the wind, as well as the direction and pitch of the vehicle, the noise may come and go completely or may simply change in volume. To isolate the source of the noise, apply 2-inch (5 cm) wide masking tape along the upper edge of both headlamp assemblies. Make sure that the tape covers the gap between the headlamp capsules and the adjacent chrome trim directly above it. Test-drive the vehicle to confirm that the noise has been eliminated. Either headlamp may contribute to this noise. With an assistant, lift up slightly on the chrome trim above each headlamp assembly and run a bead of silicone between the headlamp capsule and the chrome trim above it. Release the chrome trim so it relaxes itself into the wet bead of silicone. Afterward, run a moist finger along this area and tool the bead so it is as smooth and inconspicuous as possible. Be sure to apply silicone to the entire horizontal length of both headlamp capsules. TIP: On lighter colored cars, use clear silicone. On black cars, a black colored silicone has been found to go unnoticed as well. In some cases, the wind noise has been found to come from other areas surrounding the headlamp capsules. If this procedure does not resolve the noise concern, call the GM Technical Assistance Center before making any additional repairs in this area of the vehicle. Thanks to Matt Bierlein Service Know-How The cause of the noise may be the gap between the headlamp capsule and the chrome trim around the top edge of the headlamp capsules D Emerging Issues Apply silicone to the top area of the headlamp capsules.
