DESCRIPTION SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT Anti-Theft Systems - Concorde, Intrepid & 300M CAUTION: Large metallic objects, or items such as magnetic pass-keys, may cause vehicle starting problems. These devices do not cause damage to system. Devices may cause intermittent malfunctions if positioned too close to ignition lock cylinder during vehicle start-up. Move objects away from ignition lock cylinder and try to start vehicle. The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) is designed to provide passive protection against unauthorized vehicle use by preventing the engine from operating. The components of this system are the SKIM,. The Body Control Module (BCM), Sentry Key transponder, VTSS indicator LED and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See Fig. 1 -Fig. 3 Monday, June 04, :52:52 10:52:57 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

Fig. 3: Identifying Sentry Key Immobilizer System Components Courtesy of DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORP. SKIS INDICATOR LAMP The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) uses the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) indicator LED to give an indication when the SKIS is faulty or when the vehicle has been immobilized due to the use of an invalid ignition key. The LED is controlled by the BCM based upon messages received from the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). The VTSS/SKIS indicator LED is hard wired directly to the BCM. TRANSPONDER KEY The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) uses a transponder that is integral to each of 2 ignition keys that are supplied with the vehicle when it is shipped from the factory. The transponder chip is insulated within a nylon mount inserted in the head of the key, and invisible beneath a molded rubber cap. See Fig. 3. VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM The Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) is designed to protect against whole vehicle theft. The system monitors vehicle doors, deck lid key cylinder and ignition action for unauthorized operation. The alarm activates, the sounding of the horn, flashing of the park and tail lights, flashing of the headlamps and an engine kill feature (without SKIS). VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM INDICATOR The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) uses the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) indicator LED to give an indication when the SKIS is faulty or when the vehicle has been immobilized due to the use of an invalid ignition key. The LED is controlled by the BCM based upon messages received from the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). The VTSS/SKIS indicator LED is hard wired directly to the BCM. OPERATION SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM The SKIS includes 2 valid Sentry Key transponders from the factory. These 2 Sentry Keys can be used to program additional non-coded blank Sentry Keys. These bank keys can be cut to match a valid ignition key, but the engine will not start unless the key transponder is also programmed to the vehicle. The SKIS will recognize no more than 8 valid Sentry Key transponders at any one time. Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

The SKIS performs a self-test each time the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, and will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) if a system malfunction is detected. The SKIS can be diagnosed, and any stored DTC can be retrieved using a scan tool. SKIS INDICATOR LAMP The SKIM sends messages to the BCM to turn the LED on for about 3 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position as a bulb test. After completion of the bulb test, the SKIM sends bus messages to the BCM to keep the LED off for a duration of about one second. Then the SKIM sends messages to the BCM to turn the LED on or off based upon the results of the SKIS self-tests. If the VTSS indicator LED comes on and stays on after the bulb test, it indicates that the SKIM has detected a system malfunction and/or that the SKIS has become inoperative. If the SKIM detects an invalid key when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, it sends messages to the BCM to flash the VTSS indicator LED. The SKIM can also send messages to the BCM to flash the LED and to generate a single audible chime tone. These functions serve as an indication to the customer that the SKIS has been placed in its "Customer Learn" programming mode. The VTSS indicator LED is housed in the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) Sun Sensor located in the instrument panel top cover. If the VTSS indicator LED comes on and stays on after the bulb test function, diagnosis of the SKIS should be performed with a scan tool. TRANSPONDER KEY Each Sentry Key transponder has a unique transponder identification code programmed into it by the manufacturer. The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) has a unique "Secret Key" code programmed into it by the manufacturer. When a Sentry Key transponder is programmed into the memory of the SKIM, the SKIM learns the transponder identification code from the transponder, and the transponder learns the "Secret Key" code from the SKIM. Each of these codes is stored within the transponder and in the non-volatile memory of the SKIM. Therefore, blank keys for the SKIS must be programmed by and into the SKIM, in addition to being cut to match the mechanical coding of the ignition lock cylinder. The Sentry Key transponder is within the range of the SKIM transceiver antenna ring when it is inserted in the ignition lock cylinder. When the ignition switch is turned to the START or ON positions, the SKIM transceiver issues a Radio Frequency (RF) signal that excites the transponder chip. The transponder chip responds by issuing an RF signal containing its transponder identification code and the "Secret Key" code. The SKIM transceiver compares the transponder codes with the codes stored in it memory to determine whether a valid key is in the ignition lock cylinder. 6 VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM Upon failure of proper VTSS/SKIM communication to the PCM, the PCM will shut off fuel after 2 seconds of run time. The engine will not re-crank on the key cycle that the failure occurred, a full key down sequence must be performed for the engine to crank again. After 6 consecutive fuel shut-offs, the engine will no longer crank on subsequent key cycles. The failure must be corrected and a valid communication process between the VTSS/SKIM, and the PCM must occur for the engine to crank and start again. The electronics for the VTSS are part of the BCM. The system is armed when the vehicle is locked using, the power door lock switches, Remote Keyless Entry transmitter and door cylinder lock switches. For vehicles equipped with SKIS, the doors do not have to be locked to enable the fuel shut off feature. After the vehicle is locked and the last door is closed, the set LED indicator in the top cover will flash quickly for 16 seconds, indicating that arming is in progress. If no monitored systems are activated during this period, the system will arm. After 16 seconds the indicator LED will continue to flash at a slower rate. This indicates that the system is armed. If the deck lid key cylinder switch is not sensed by the system, the indicator LED will remain lit during the arming process, although the system will still arm. If the indicator LED does not illuminate at all upon door closing, it indicates that the system is not arming. Passive disarming occurs upon normal vehicle entry by unlocking either door with the ignition key or remote transmitter. This disarming will also halt the alarm once it has been activated. A tamper alert exists to notify the driver that the VTSS has been activated. This alert consists of 3 horn pulses when the vehicle is disarmed. VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM INDICATOR The SKIM sends messages to the BCM to turn the LED on for about 3 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position as a bulb test. The SKIM can also send messages to the BCM to flash the LED and to generate a single Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

audible chime tone. This procedure requires SKIM to be placed in SECURED ACCESS mode using 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) code. If PCM and SKIM are replaced at the same time, program Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into PCM first. All vehicle keys will need to be replaced and programmed into new SKIM. SECURED ACCESS mode is not required to check programmed status of key. Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

If 3 attempts are made to enter SECURED ACCESS mode using an incorrect PIN code, SECURED ACCESS mode will be locked out for one hour. To exit lock out mode, turn ignition switch to ON position continuously for one hour then enter correct PIN code. Ensure all accessories are turned off. Monitor battery state and connect battery charger if necessary. To program sentry keys using "customer programming method", 2 valid sentry keys are required. See CUSTOMER LEARN PROGRAMMING METHOD. Initialization Procedure CAUTION: If wrong country code is programmed into Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) when requested, SKIM must be replaced. Obtain vehicle's unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) code assigned to original SKIM module from vehicle owner or Chrysler's customer center before performing the following procedure: 1. Turn ignition switch to ON position and ensure vehicle transmission is in Park or Neutral. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then select SKIM MODULE REPLACEMENT and follow scan tool prompts. 2. Program unique 4-digit PIN code into SKIM. Select COUNTRY CODE and program correct country code into SKIM's memory (U.S.). 3. Select UPDATE VIN and press ENTER. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will transfer Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to SKIM automatically. 4. Scan tool will ask if "Secret Key" data is to be transferred. Press ENTER to transfer vehicle's unique "Secret Key" data from PCM. This process will ensure all current vehicle keys will still operate Sentry Key Immobilizer System. PROGRAMMING SENTRY KEYS USING SCAN TOOL Once key blank is cut, insert key into ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAM IGNITION KEYS. Enter 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) code. When programming is completed, Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) will exit SECURED ACCESS mode and display status of key. PROGRAMMING SUCCESSFUL is displayed if SKIM sentry key programming is successful. If ignition key programming is unsuccessful, one of the following status messages may be displayed: LEARNED KEY IN IGNITION is displayed if key in the ignition has already been programmed into vehicle's SKIM. Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

8 KEYS ALREADY LEARNED, PROGRAMMING NOT DONE is displayed if 8 keys have already been programmed into SKIM. If a new key needs to be added due to a lost or defective key, the ERASE ALL KEYS function has to be performed. Original 7 keys plus additional new key may then be reprogrammed into SKIM. PROGRAMMING NOT ATTEMPTED is displayed after an ERASE ALL KEYS function is executed. PROGRAMING KEY FAILED is displayed if further diagnosis is required. To program additional keys, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove current programmed key and insert next new blank key. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Re-enter SECURED ACCESS mode and repeat PROGRAM IGNITION KEYS procedure. CUSTOMER LEARN PROGRAMMING METHOD CAUTION: To program sentry keys using "customer programming method", 2 valid sentry keys are required. If 2 valid sentry keys are not available, use scan tool to program sentry keys. See PROGRAMMING SENTRY KEYS USING SCAN TOOL. NOTE: The following steps must be completed in proper order. Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) will automatically exit CUSTOMER LEARN programming mode if time allotted is exceeded, or if 8 keys have already been programmed. 1. Ensure new sentry key blank is cut before proceeding. Insert one of the 2 valid sentry keys into ignition. Turn ignition switch to ON position. 2. After ignition switch has been turned to ON position for 3 seconds, but no more than 15 seconds, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove key. Insert second valid sentry key and turn ignition switch to ON position within 15 seconds. 3. About 10 seconds after completion of step 2, sun sensor/vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) Light Emitting Diode (LED) indicator will flash and a single tone will be heard. This indicates system has entered CUSTOMER LEARN programming mode. 4. Within 50 seconds, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove valid sentry key. Insert blank sentry key. Turn ignition switch to ON position. 5. After about 10 seconds, a single tone will be heard. Sun sensor/vtss LED indicator will stop flashing and stay on for about 3 seconds to indicate sentry key has been successfully programmed. 6. SKIS will immediately return to normal operation after exiting CUSTOMER LEARN programming mode. 7. Repeat procedure for each additional sentry key to be programmed. 10 SYSTEM TESTS CAUTION: Large metallic objects, or items such as magnetic pass-keys, may cause vehicle starting problems. These devices do not cause damage to system. Devices may cause intermittent malfunctions if positioned too close to ignition lock cylinder during vehicle start-up. Move objects away from ignition lock cylinder and try to start vehicle. NOTE: SYSTEM TESTS are basic system checks. For full diagnosis, use scan tool. For scan tool testing, see BODY CONTROL MODULES - CONCORDE, INTREPID & 300M (2002) or BODY DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES (2003). Self-diagnostic tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) scan tool. A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions. SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER MODULE BULB CHECK Note operation of sun sensor/vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) Light Emitting Diode (LED) located on top of instrument panel during check. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) should send message to BCM to turn LED on for about 3 seconds. After 3-second bulb check, SKIM sends message to turn LED off for about one second. If LED comes on and stays on after one-second off period, there is a malfunction in the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS). If LED flashes and a single chime tone is heard, an invalid key was used to attempt vehicle start-up. SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM CIRCUIT TEST 1. Check related fuses located in junction block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. If fuses are okay, go to next step. If any fuse is blown, check associated circuit for short to ground, and replace fuse. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and SKIM connector terminal No. 5, ground circuit (Black wire). See Fig. 4. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between ground and SKIM. Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

Fig. 4: Identifying Sentry Key Immobilizer Module Harness Connector Terminals Courtesy of CHRYSLER CORP. 3. Reconnect negative battery cable. VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM SELF-TEST NOTE: Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) and VTSS self-test will be inoperative if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has been replaced within last 20 ignition switch cycles. System operation may be verified by entering self-test mode. Self-test mode can only be entered using Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) scan tool. 1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then SELF-TEST. Once in self-test mode, parking lights and taillights will flash and horn will sound twice. Parking lights and taillights will flash verifying their operation, and horn will sound twice to verify proper trunk cylinder position. 2. To stop lights from flashing, turn ignition switch to OFF position while keeping system in self-test. While in self-test mode, horn will sound after each of the following steps to indicate proper operation: Ensure all doors are closed. Open, then close each door. Horn will sound when door ajar switch closes and opens. There must be a one-second delay between closing and opening switch. Activate power door locks in both LOCK and UNLOCK directions. Horn will sound after each activation. Rotate key in both front door lock cylinders to unlock position. Horn will sound when switch closes and opens. Ensure there is a one-second delay between changing switch states, or horn will not sound. Using Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, activate locks in both LOCK and UNLOCK directions for one-second. Horn will sound after each activation. Monday, June 04, :52:52 PM Page Mitchell Repair Information Company, LLC.

Turn ignition switch to ON position. A single horn pulse indicates proper operation of ignition input and exits VTSS module out of self-test mode. For any of these tests, if switch does not remain open or closed for at least one second, the horn will only sound once. 3. Lack of horn pulse during any operation indicates a switch failure. Check for continuity at suspect switch. If switch continuity is okay, check for open or shorted wire between switch and VTSS module. 4. Whenever a VTSS malfunction occurs, verify wiring harness is properly connected to all connectors before starting diagnosis and repair procedures. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
