Field Cruise engine control lets you maintain a consistent engine speed and consistent ground speed. You can seed, fertilise incorporate chemicals uniformly. With the tractor moving, press the learn touch pad. Engage the sequence button, No 1 or No 2 on the CommandARM module. Now, execute your tractor commands. You can programme the hydraulic remotes to extend, retract, float or cancel; raise the 3-point hitch; shift up, shift down or resume the Automatic PowerShift transmission. 10 HIGH CAPACITY HYDRAULICS John Deere offers outstanding TouchSet hydraulics. You get up to 166 l/min flow. System pressure is 200 bar to make implements snap to attention. TouchSet hydraulics give you maximum control of the oil flow and implement response. For example, you can set oil to flow for a specified time, continuously or only when you engage the hydraulic lever. It s the easiest hydraulic control system you ll ever use. John Deere TouchSet hydraulics: Still ahead of its time These pads set upper and lower cylinder stop limits when your implement is equipped with TouchSet control which allows the implement to connect to the tractor electronics. 1 4 Push this pad to 2 deactivate the hydraulic system prior to implement transport. Set individual SCVs by 3 pressing the corresponding Roman numeral and adjusting the timed detent and flow with two rotary knobs, No 4 and No Use this dial to set the length of time you wish oil to flow. Using this convenient feature eliminates inadvertent lever kickback from implement back pressure. To set hydraulic flow, 5 simply turn the dial on the right. Adjust from the seat, on-the-go whilst the SCV is in use. Flow rates are easily repeated when re-attaching implements. A large digital display 6 permanently shows the rate and flow you set, as well as the flow time for each SCV. Hydraulic levers on the CommandARM module provide complete control with extend, neutral, retract, float and timed detent positions. You can even feather the control: The further you push, the more the implement responds. 10

It s fast, smooth and accurate. Nobody offers, or even comes close to the response rate, load sensing and position control that John Deere has developed. Our system will help keep you moving at a steady pace without tedious hitch adjustments and corrections. HITCH AND PTO You can add a wide variety of attachments to a 9020 Series tractor to increase its usefulness. For example we ve highlighted the 3-point hitch and PTO on these two pages. The PTO is modulated for smooth engagements, with plenty of power to handle high load conditions and to start high inertia equipment. Uniform starts and stops help avoid any shocks to your implement. And thanks to our tremendous engine Extra Power capabilities, PTO operations are extra productive. The John Deere hitch is also very productive. Advanced load and depth control helps keep you on the move. The fast acting hitch responds instantly to changing conditions, making hitch adjustments smooth, quick and unnoticeable. A category III, 3-point hitch provides up to 8350kg lift capacity for most implements. For the largest implements a Category IV hitch with over 9200 kg lift capacity is available. The heavy duty drawbar can be positioned in the centre, to the left or right to accommodate various implement requirements. It can also be lengthened to a desired position. Increase the usefulness of your high horsepower machines. Equip your 9020 Series 4 wheel drive with an optional 1 3 /4 inch 1000 rpm fully independent PTO. It can be factory or field installed. To engage or disengage the PTO, just move a lever. You get smooth PTO startups that can handle large, heavy loads. The PTO lever is colour-coded for quick identification and is conveniently located on the side control console, within easy reach. 11

12 12.5 L POWERTECH ENGINES A new benchmark Now, generate more power than you ever have before. Introducing the all-new 9020 Series 4 wheel drive tractors. All three models, the 375 hp 9320, 425 hp 9420 and 450 hp 9520 tractors feature our 12.5 l POWERTECH engines. These incredible powerplants produce up to 7 percent extra power (above rated engine power) plus as much as 38 percent torque rise. This is the kind of strength you need to pull deep-digging, extrawide implements in high draft soils. And thanks to our unit injection fuel system and 4 valves per cylinder, these high torque engines maintain excellent fuel efficiency while meeting current air quality standards. And the cam-inhead design and internal routing of fluids create a trim, athletic profile. These remarkable engines are easy to service there are fewer leak points and they re built to last. The large, high capacity turbocharger is efficient, providing excellent response and air transfer. This, in conjunction with the air-to-air aftercooler, promotes greater fuel economy. Unit injectors (near left) are electronically controlled for precise timing and injection. Each is essentially its own high pressure fuel pump delivering up to 22,500 psi. Unit injectors eliminate pressure bursts, reduce time delays and completely control atomisation and injection. This increases fuel efficiency and promotes cleaner combustion. Directed top liner cooling reduces liner temperatures by 55 degrees C. This feature reduces oil consumption, emissions and improves cylinder durability. The full flow oil cooler is designed directly into the cast block, minimising the chance of leak points and increasing reliability. The plate-type cooler element is immersed in high velocity coolant for efficient heat transfer. Combination type oil filter provides full flow and bypass filtration. It traps both large and small contaminants in a single unit. Our cross flow cylinder head (right) features four valves per cylinder. The ports are arranged in a canted design to increase air flow in and out of the cylinders. With the additional air flow, camshaft timing can be optimised to utilise more of the expansion stroke. The result is improved torque and economy. Notice that the exhaust valves are the same size as the intake valves to improve exhaust scavenging. 12

13 in power: Get up to 507 hp Long life rocker arms with rollers ride directly on the induction hardened camshaft lobes to give smooth operation. The heavy camshaft and large size rocker arms and rocker arm rollers help minimise unit loading. Highly efficient new front geartrain features only five active gears. The large size gears add capacity; the high contact gear ratios reduce stress and loading. The gear driven water pump operates independently of the fan drive and is rated at 65 percent efficiency (industry average is 45 percent efficiency). The gear driven, integrated oil pump is designed into the front geartrain. It operates at 1800 rpm (engine speed at 2100 rpm). Slower operating speed, fewer parts and greater flow help ensure long pump life and smooth engine operation. The two piece articulated piston in 12.5 l engine (above) features a forged alloy steel crown to better withstand higher temperatures. The sound mechanical and thermal strength also helps reduce fatigue. And cast copper/lead steel backed bushings in the crown provide twice the wear resistance of conventional aluminium pistons and provide high load carrying capability. You get less heat transfer and closer tolerances between the piston and the liner. The turned skirt design and spray jets also provide better cooling, oil control and lubrication. It s what s inside that counts the most. As you can see, there are few moving parts. The cam-inhead design eliminates push rods and lifters; delivers precise control of valve operation; and extends the one-time valve lash interval to 2500 hours. A large damper improves torsional control to maintain crankshaft reliability. It drives a strong, 12-rib poly-v drive belt, with automatic tensioner, to operate the fan. A large, heavy duty deep sump oil pan features a 42 litre capacity. The steel intake tube is strategically positioned near the deepest part of the sump to ensure proper engine lube during off-level operation. A special alloy material for cylinder liners that s stronger than common gray iron and less brittle than induction hardened liners, provides a stronger liner flange. High performance engine power, torque 500 reserve and fuel efficiency. That s what you get with these tractors. And as field 450 conditions change, torque and power 400 respond accordingly. Thanks to our 350 advanced, electronically controlled unitinjection system, John Deere engineers 300 shaped the torque curve to produce up to percent torque rise and maintain this 200 level of high torque performance to as low 150 ENGINE RPM as 900 rpm. So, as the load increases, these 900 engines develop a real grip to keep you going. At the same time, we optimised fuel delivery to ensure peak operating characteristics and practical fuel economy. The all-new 18 speed Automatic PowerShift transmission incorporates the latest in transmission technology, alongside traditional John Deere strength. The massive gear case features a narrow profile to accommodate the modular design and fit perfectly into the 9020 s protective steel frame. Strong helical cut gears, industrial type roller bearing, hardened shafts and ample lubrication and cooling give the 18 speed Automatic PowerShift transmission the ability to stand up to excessive power loads while providing smooth shifting performance. High-tech shift solenoids modulate clutch engagements to ensure smooth, uniform shifts. Minimal gear meshes promote added efficiency. And in high loading areas, gears are helical cut to enhance durability and promote quiet operation. Multi wet disc clutches are electronically controlled and modulated to ensure smooth gear engagements. Oil flows only when needed to reduce drag. Industrial strength tapered roller bearings maintain excellent shaft alignment and provide extra surface area for high contact loading. Input yoke and shaft with dampener moves the raw engine power (and high torque power loads) into the transmission case to set the gears in motion. The high strength steel housing is perfectly sized to fit neatly into the frame profile yet withstand instantaneous power loads. High pressure lubrication system routes oil through the shafts to minimise lines. There s less chance of leakage, greater reliability. 18 speed Automatic PowerShift Strong output shaft routes power to the front axle to give you added pulling power and traction. 14 The high capacity pump draws from deep within the well to ensure proper lubrication on steep hillsides. Clutches, bearings and gears are pressure lubricated (versus bathed) to oil drag and increase efficiency.

16 TYRES AND WEIGHTS Put weight in the right places and you ll increase muscle. That s right. A properly ballasted and balanced tractor, on the largest size tyres recommended with properly adjusted inflation pressures, can improve traction, reduce compaction, improve pulling power, maximise fuel efficiency and improve ride quality. And to help you accomplish this, John Deere offers a wide variety of cast weight packages and large size tyres. Read through this page and discover how you too can optimise tractor performance. Optimise pulling power and performance You can never have too much tyre on your tractor. Larger tyres let you operate at lower inflation pressure and still carry the axle load. This 9020 is equipped with 800/70 R38 tyres. For other recommended tyre selections, see the chart below. We generally recommend ballasting to 48 kg per horsepower. For drawbar implements, it s essential that the tractor is balanced so that no more than 50 to 55 percent of weight is up front. For mounted implements, put 55 to 60 percent up front. Whenever possible, use only cast ballast. A Quik-Tatch weight rack can be located between the fenders. 17 Turning power into progress RUGGED FINAL DRIVES AND AXLES Electro hydraulic differential lock uses a 3-pinion design. This 3 point geometry adds tremendous strength and allows the three pinion gears to carry the load more evenly. Once engaged, the pinions cannot turn, transmitting all torque through the shafts. Inboard planetaries spread the axle loads over three points to increase strength and durability. The strong, steel ring gear forms a tight seal between the axle housing and differential case. The high capacity planet gears, ring gear, and shaft splines mesh perfectly for smooth, reliable transfer of power. Differential lock wet clutch on 9020 Series tractors feature large discs and plates to give the differential lock greater ability to transmit torque to the side that needs it more. Oil cooling ensures years of dependable service. The robust differential driveshaft is heat treated and induction hardened for extra strength and durability. The high capacity tapered roller bearings provide smooth performance and long life. The driveshaft is sized to handle stress and high torque loads. All gear sets and components are well lubricated throughout the axle. John Deere final drives are built to flow power smoothly from the transmission to the ground. They re also built to last. The strong differential driveshaft routes the high torque power to the spiral bevel gear set which sets the axles into motion. Inboard planetary gears spread the power loads evenly over three points to reduce stress and ensure uniform loading on the axles. The large diameter, heavy duty axles and gears are built to handle the tremendous power associated with deep tillage, wide implements and difficult field conditions. Plus, they re designed to handle the new high levels of power you d expect from a new world leader. Heavy duty, multiple lip, unitised outer seal eliminates two service points on each axle. It s specially designed to keep oil in and contaminants out. High load tapered roller bearings are oil cooled to prevent heat buildup. The bar type axles feature a machined rack which, in conjunction with a special pinion gear tool attachment, lets you adjust wheel treads easily. The reliable, annular brake piston provides more uniform contact than a 3 piston system. These beefy, high energy wet disc brakes use cooled and filtered oil to maintain long lasting performance. Hydraulically actuated wet disc brakes ensure positive stopping and long, dependable service. Brakes are selfadjusting and cooled with filtered oil.
