SECTION 1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Owner s/operator s Manual MAMBA HB SERIES DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE General The New-Way MAMBA HB SeriesLoaders were designed to work hard and withstand the rigors of daily use. The forces used on the packer to compact refuse is accomplished with hydraulic pressures which are created and then directed through hoses to the slide/sweep panel. Extreme care and safety practices need to be used at all times while operating the packer. The owner is responsible to require all employees associated with this unit, read this manual thoroughly so that they fully understand all the instructions contained within it. Publication of these safety precautions does not imply and should not be considered an all inclusive list. It is the operator s responsibility to learn and follow the proper operational procedures that are in accordance with all safety codes and requirements including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) requirements and Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) regulations. ANSI Z has been released and should be followed. Failure to operate this machine correctly, or failure to heed warnings in the operator manual or on safety decals, may cause Death or Dismemberment to the operator, co-workers or bystanders. Safety Decals Safety Decals are very important and should be clearly seen and obeyed at all times. Pages 1-14 thru 1-21 describes a detailed diagram of where the decals should be displayed. If any of these decals are missing or cannot be clearly read, they must be replaced immediately with the proper decal. New decals can be ordered free of charge from New Way by calling (800) Danger, Warning and Caution As you are reading this manual you may see WARNING, CAUTION, and DANGER graphics such as you see below. These graphics are there to alert the operator or mechanic of specific safety issues concerning a certain operation. Operators and maintenance personnel shall read the instructions that accompany these graphics and follow them carefully. Compliance and common sense are crucial for safe operational procedures. 1-3

DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE SECTION 3 MAINTENANCE Owner s/operator s Manual MAMBA HB SERIES ELECTRICAL TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE LINES Electrical trouble shooting will be less intimidating if remembering that all electric circuits are electricity passing from the battery through the wires, fuses, switches and relays to the component or components and to ground, from which it is passed back to the battery. Any electrical problem is an interruption of the flow of electricity to and from the battery. The two instruments on the opposite page are the main tools that are used in trouble shooting this 12 volt, negative ground, alternator charged system. NOTE: For trouble shooting purposes the battery will need to be connected but when servicing any components remove the ground cable and the 30amp inline fuse located at the power source. GENERAL INFORMATION: The previous chapter holds the various electrical schematics for the packer unit and a chassis to packer wiring schematic is sent along with the the truck. Refer to the individual schematics for the problem being investigated. Page 3-8 is the harness scheme for the packer body and should give a good understanding of tracing problems related to the packer body. This chapter is designed to help with most problems encountered and the diagnostic steps in solving those problems. CHECKING FOR VOLTAGE Electrical problems generally are attributed to blown fuses, loose or corroded connections or a failed relay. Check these things as a first step in trouble shooting. When changing a blown fuse always use the same amperage rating as the circuits require this amount of protection. Using a larger fuse value could cause serious damage. If the new fuse blows soon after replacement do not replace until the problem is found and corrected. Starting at a point closest to the power source and following it along the path of the circuit having a problem is usually the fastest way to find the problem. Pay special attention to points where connections are made as these can be the trouble areas. Connector cases hide oxidation and misaligned or loose wires. Often this will be the case if intermitent problems are being experienced. The truck ignition may need to be in the on position to have voltage to most of the circuits. CHECKING FOR GROUND To determine if a component is grounded, disconnect the ground from the battery and having set the multimeter to the ohms scale connect one lead of the multimeter to a good ground. Connect the other lead to the ground wire of connection being tested. The resistance should be 5 ohms or less if the ground is good. 3-12

DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE SECTION 3 MAINTENANCE Owner s/operator s Manual MAMBA HB SERIES RELAY CIRCUITS 30 BRAIDED WIRE STEEL PLATE SWITCH CONTACTS 87A 87 POWER CIRCUITS ELECTROMAGNET CONTROL CIRCUITS COIL SPRING The first step in trouble shooting a circuit controled by a relay is to understand how a relay works. When power is applied across the 85 and 86 terminals (control circuits) current passes through the coil which builds a magnetic field in the bar it is wrapped around. This pulls the steel plate to it and that is the audible snap heard when power is applied. The spring attached to the steel plate pulls the plate away from the bar when power is removed. The relay uses a low current circuit (control circuit) to open and close the high current circuit (power circuit). If a failed relay is suspected, while being close enough to hear, have the switch to the component in question turn on. Remember you must have the ignition key on. When the switch is turned on an audible snap should be heard. Continuity between 30 and 87 should be found at this point. With the switch in the off position continuity should be between 30 and 87a. If not then you have a failed relay that needs replaced. It is important to remember that relays can be wired to have power energize the circuit or can be wired to have ground energize the circuit. On the following page are examples of each. 3-13

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW WAY MAMBA SERIES LOADERS SCRANTON MANUFACTURING CO,INC. 101 STATE ST, POBOX 336 SCRANTON, IOWA (712) OR (800) FAX (712)

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE MAMBA HB MODEL PREPARATION The unit has a lifting eyelet on the top center of the body. The equipment used to lift the packer should have a rating that exceeds the body weight. Body and sub-frame weights are: Mamba 600 = 4560 Mamba 800 = 5350 Mamba 1000 = 6050 We highly recommend removing the sub-frame from the packer body. The chassis should have the rear wheels secured with wheel chocks and the engine shut down. The body and subframe can be lifted and set on the chassis frame. The above picture depicts the areas of the packer and subframe where the hinge pins and cylinder pins are located. Figure A and Figure B are close in views of the pins that need removed in order to separate the sub-frame from the body. Figure C shows the wiring harness for the body ajar switched tied to the front of the body for shipping and will need the wire tie clipped and the wire kept with the subframe in such a manner as to not pinch with the sub-frame or the body as the packer is being mounted. Figure A Figure B Figure C HINGE PIN BAND BAND CYLINDER PIN WIRE TIE If the unit is equipped with the proximity switch option the proximity switch lead will have been wire tied to the subframe and the extension to the body and can be left that way till body is reattached. CAUTION When removing the pins from the hinge and cylinders there are pinch points so care should be taken to ensure the hands are protected from the weight pinching them as the pins are removed. When the pins are removed from both sides of the unit the bands can be cut to allow the body of the unit to be lifted and separated from the sub-frame. The body of the unit can then be set aside. Ensure that the area where the body will be set is level and the stands that the unit was shipped on can be used to hold the body until the sub-frame is squared up and secured to the chassis.

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE MAMBA HB MODEL MOUNTING THE SUB-FRAME A minimum of 4 clearance between the cab of the chassis and the unit is required. Refer to the chassis manufacturers information to determine if more than 4 clearance is required. A 4 clearance can be obtained by measuring 30 from the cab of the chassis to the front outside edge of the sub-frame. Square the sub-frame on the chassis frame. Spacers may be required to allow for rivet or bolt heads that protrude on the top of some chassis frames. Once the sub-frame is setting flat and square on the chassis frame clamp the sub-frame securely to the chassis. For the Mamba 600 and 800 six sets of brackets (three per side) are used for mounting the sub-frame to the chassis. An additional set per side is used on the Mamba The first set of brackets should be located directly under or slightly ahead of the front body hinge. The second set should be located directly under or slightly ahead of the cylinder pivot pin. The third set should be located as close to the end of the truck frame as possible allowing 1 of truck frame remaining. On the Mamba 1000 the fourth set should be located between the first and second set an preferably closer to the first set. CAUTION When locating the bracket placement always keep in mind that you will be drilling holes through the truck frame at these locations. Do not drill through wiring, fuel or air lines, cross members or any tanks. Before drilling holes or cutting the frame refer to the body building instructions from the chassis manufacturer. When the desired locations are found the bracket weldment should be clamped in place on the sub-frame and the holes for securing the bracket to the truck frame should be marked for drilling. Remove the brackets and drill the holes to be used. Check and ensure that the chassis frame is the only thing being drilled through or into. The brackets are now ready to be bolted to the truck frame with the x1.5 (5/8) grade 8 bolts and lock CAUTION nuts supplied in the shipping kit. Tighten all mounting bolts to 210 ft lbs. BEFORE WELDING THE BRACKETS TO THE SUB-FRAME ENSURE THAT THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM ON YOUR CHASSIS IS PROTECTED BY EITHER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CABLES OR USING AN APPROVED SURGE PROTECTION DEVICE. DANGER PROTECT THE FUEL TANK, HYDRAULIC TANK, ANY WIRING AND FUEL LINES WITH WELDING BLANKETS TO PREVENT FIRES OR EXPLOSIONS. WHEN THE SUBFRAME IS SQUARED UP ON THE MOUNTING BRACKETS A MINIMUM WELD OF.375 (3/8) NEEDS TO BE ADHERED TO ON ALL SIDES OF THE MOUNTING BRACKET PLATE TO THE SUB- FRAME. Fabricate a bracket to hold the fuel fill hose where it comes through the sub-frame. The mud flap brackets will then be welded to the sub-frame in the appropriate locations. Route DOT wiring to the front street side

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS DRIVING THE DIFFERENCE MAMBA HB MODEL of the sub-frame so they will be available for wiring your packer. CAUTION Ensure that all wiring is secured away from sharp, hot or moving parts on the chassis as well as ensuring that it will not be pinched when the body is seated on the sub-frame. BODY ATTACHMENT The packer body can now be lowered carefully on to the sub-frame and reattached to the subframe using the pins that were removed when the body was removed from the sub-frame. Ensure that the new cotter pins provided with the shipping kit are installed to hold all 4 pins on each side of the unit are secured fully to keep the pins from working free. CAUTION PLUMBING AND WIRING Ensure that the hoses and wiring have been routed in such a way that they will have the ability to move with the upward and rearward movement of the body without straining when the body lift is being used. Clean all hydraulic fittings and hoses that may have become contaminated during shipping. Mount the PTO and pump on the chassis and program to manufactures specification. Programming will vary to chassis being used. Once installed a.75 (3/4) high pressure hose (3000 PSI) will need to be connected to the pump and routed to the front valve on the packer body. Ensure this hose is routed in such a way as to avoid hot spots, sharp edges and moving parts. A 1.25 (1 1/4) low pressure (200 PSI) suction hose will be routed from the pump to the packer body tank. Ensure this hose is routed in such a way as to avoid hot spots, sharp edges and moving parts. Route the hoses in a manner as to avoid kinking of the hoses. Check to ensure that the hydraulic oil level is correct and refer to the oil chart on page 3-6 of the operator manual section of the Mamba series manual before adding oil. The DOT wiring along with the loomed two wires of the body ajar switch including also the PTO wiring should enter the Cantex box through the open strain relief located in the bottom of the box. If your packer is equipped with a proximity switch for the body ajar feature the proximity wire will need to be clipped loose and routed to the proximity switch lead on the sub-frame and plugged together there. ALL wiring needs to be wire tied in such a way as to keep it clear of moving parts, hot spots and sharp edges. Wiring instructions for the chassis to body detail are located on page 3-9 of the operator section of the Mamba series manual. Follow the color coding listed there. Once the wiring has been completed the unit should be operated to ensure proper operation of each function. The hydraulic schematic is located on page 3-10 of the operator manual section of the Mamba series manual. Primer packers will need the operational and safety decals applied after painting of the body. Detailed instructions and placement of decals can be found on pages 1-14 through 1-21 of the operator manual section of the Mamba series manual. WHEN WORKING ON OR AROUND THIS UNIT REFER TO THE PROPER LOCKOUT/TAGOUT PROCEDURES STARTING ON PAGE 1-5 OF THE OPERA- TOR MANUAL SECTION OF THE MAMBA SERIES MANUAL. 74 Tool List Strap wrench Rubber hammer Allen wrench - 5/32 Screwdriver - long, thin shanked Ring removal tool Packing installation tools (drivers) Masking tape

Seal Kit A B C D E Seal repair kit Which should contain the following: A: Lower guide ring B: Spiral retaining ring C: U-cupped seal D: Upper guide ring E: Wiper Seal

Seal Removal We recommend draining the oil from the cylinder before hoisting it to a vertical work-stand position. Firmly secure the cylinder in place. 1. Remove the setscrews from the head nut.

Seal Removal 2. Using strap wrench, remove the smallest head nut. If the tube turns with the head nut, tighten the next head nut slightly, or use another strap wrench to hold the tube in place.

Seal Removal 3. To remove the old packing, use a chain hoist to pull up on the tube. The packing should come out as the tube is lifted. We recommend using a lift strap so not to damage rod eye of cylinder. On larger stages, there is no pin eye to help in lifting of the stages. Instead, you will lift up on the head nut of the next smallest tube to lift the tube you need access to.

Seal Removal 4. If all or part of the packing remains inside the cylinder, clean off a section of the tube and wrap masking tape around it. 5. Lower the wrapped section into the packing, and lift the tube slowly. This should remove the top guide ring and U-cupped seal. Continue these procedures for the remaining tubes, working from smallest stage to the largest stage.

New Seal Installation Before installing the new seal, clean the seal cavity and plunger tube O.D. Lubricate the Hyco U-cupped seal inside and out with an all-purpose grease. 1. Install the seal on the tube. The U-shaped cavity should face down toward the cylinder body. 2. Place the correct size seal installation tool over seal. Tap the seal into the tube bore. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

New Seal Installation 3. Install the top guide ring. When the seal is set properly, the top guide ring should be flush with the end of the tube. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

New Seal Installation 4.Place a new wiper seal into the head nut.

New Seal Installation 5. Apply anti-seize compound to the sleeve threads. Then reinstall each of the head nuts, starting with the largest one and working toward the smallest one. Use a strap wrench to tighten each head nut until it bottoms out on the sleeve ends. 6. Install a nylon plug into the head nut.

New Seal Installation 7. Finally, install the head nut setscrew.

Cylinder Disassembly If the cylinder needs to be disassembled, first make three clips from thin steel. They should be approximately.020 thick, 1/2 wide, 4 long. Bend each clip about 1 from the end so it can rest over the top of the tube. Note: Banding strap can be used.

Cylinder Disassembly 1. Insert a screwdriver into the spiral retaining ring slot. At the same time, insert a ring removal tool (or thin screwdriver with a hooked end) under the end of the spiral retaining ring. Pull the ring upward and out of the sleeve cavity. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

Cylinder Disassembly 2. To remove lower guide ring, clean off a section of the tube. Place masking tape on cylinder and lower down past the bottom guide ring. Lift the tube slowly.

Cylinder Disassembly 1. Begin disassembly inserting a screwdriver under the end of the retainer ring to pry the ring out of the groove. Place a clip between the retainer ring and the retainer ring groove directly across from the opening of the retainer ring. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

Cylinder Disassembly 2. Continue using the screwdriver as pry bars, and install the remaining two clips around the outside of the retainer ring. 3. With a hoist, lift the tube completely out of the cylinder. The retainer ring will be removed with the tube. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

Cylinder Reassembly 2. Install new guide rings on the piston of each tube. Some double acting cylinders have two guide rings instead of one. In those instances, both rings should be installed. Note: Some pistons require two guide rings.

Cylinder Reassembly 1. After all plunger tubes are in place, install the retainer rings. 2. Use the correct collar to seat the retainer rings in the grooves. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

Cylinder Reassembly 3. Install the bottom guide ring with the small diameter down toward the cylinder body. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

Cylinder Reassembly 4. Install the spiral retaining ring. 5. Follow steps one through four for the remaining tube assemblies. Note: Here the tube has been removed to show the procedure clearly.

V-Packing Option Important Note: Each packing ring should be installed one at a time and the V opening should be facing toward the pressure as shown to the left. The packing kit consists of: A. Lower spacer ring B. Bottom adapter C. Five v-rings D. Top bushing E. Wiper seal

V-Packing Option Installation 1. Install the packing set, making sure the offset in the bottom spacer passes over the retainer ring. This can easily be accomplished by installing the spacer before the rest of the packing set.

V-Packing Option Installation 2. Place the correct size collar over the packing, and tap the packing straight into place using a rubber hammer. Note: Oiling V-packing with hydraulic oil will ease installation.

V-Packing Option Installation 3. When the packing is set properly, the top bushing should extend approximately 1/8 above the end of the tube. For future packing adjustment. 4. Follow steps to replace wiper seal and head nut. (See New Seal Installation)
