1 BASE UPGRADEABLE VALVES FOR TIERED SOLUTIONS As part of Phoenix Controls Upgradeable Control tiered solution, the Base Upgradeable Valve (BxV) with a flow feedback card, pressure switch, and 3 to 5 second electric actuator, provides essential airflow solutions when control is to be carried out by the Building Automation System (BAS) contractor in critical spaces. This blended architecture has Phoenix Controls high-speed electric Celeris valves, sash sensors, and Sentry displays on the fume hoods while zone balance and temperature control is done by BAS-controlled supply and general exhaust BxV. Each hood valve is connected with an analog 0-10 Vdc feedback and alarm DO signal to the BAS zone controller. Field mounted BAS controllers are placed on each supply and general exhaust BxV to directly control their actuators using a factory configured 2-10 Vdc, 4-20 ma, or Vdc signal. Each BxV flow feedback signal is used by the BAS controller for actuator position control and by the BAS zone controller for zone balance control. Zone balance, temperature, humidity, and other controls may be accomplished in a variety of ways determined by the BAS. If maximum hood data (sash position, face velocity, fume hood occupancy, and explicit alarms) and emergency mode control is requested, it can be provided by also connecting the hood valves via LON to a Room Controller (RMC) or Room Integrator (RMI) that networks to the BAS via BACnet. If minimum hood data is requested (flow feedback and one general alarm DO per hood), the RMC/RMI is not required. This approach maintains Phoenix Controls speed and containment control on the fume hoods and provides our proven pressure independence on all zone valves. By using BAS controllers on BxV valves, end users have broad control options and flexibility with which to implement temperature and zone balance control. Also, the three-to-five-second BxVs can be easily retrofitted into an all one-second Complete Control with Vantage system if desired, offering continued support and expandable performance upgrades over the life and operation of your facility. 3 APPLICATIONS The Upgradeable Control tiered solution is an alternate controls architecture with Phoenix Controls high-speed electric Celeris valves, sash sensors, and Sentry displays on the fume hoods, connected with analog 0-10 Vdc feedback and general alarm DO signals to the BAS. The supply and general exhaust have base upgradeable valves (BxV) with flow feedback cards, pressure switches, and three to five second electric actuators directly controlled by the BAS. Zone balance, temperature, humidity, and other controls may be accomplished in a variety of ways determined by the BAS. Phoenix BxV valves are fully built and characterized on NVLAP airstations. Then, field mounted BAS controllers are placed on the supply and general exhaust BxV and directly control their actuators using a factory configured 0-10 Vdc, 2-10 Vdc, or 4-20 ma signal. For applications where the BAS uses a 4-20 ma actuator control signal, a 500 ohm ¼ Watt factory-provided resistor (terminated on a white connector in the flow feedback enclosure) is used to convert 4 to 20 ma to the 2 to 10 Vdc signal needed to modulate the actuator. By monitoring the supply and general exhaust pressure switch signals, the BAS controller knows when the valves are in alarm states. If maximum hood data (for example, sash position, face velocity, ZPS user status - normal or setback mode, explicit alarms - low differential static pressure or jam) and emergency mode control is requested, it can be provided by also connecting the hood valves via LON to a RMC or RMI that networks to the BAS via BACnet (MS/TP, IP, or Ethernet). If minimum hood data is requested (flow feedback and one general alarm DO per hood), the RMC/RMI is not required Phoenix Controls. Specifications subject to change without notice. It is also used by the BAS zone controller for calculating and controlling zone balance. Upgradeable Control BxV Connections The flow feedback assembly is factory installed in the PPC flame retardant black box. One PCB required per flow feedback assembly. 7 Wiring for Triple and Quad Valves NOTES: See Phoenix Recommended Cables on page 8. for more information. See submittal wiring diagrams for project-specific details. BAS CONTROL OF BxV Because Upgradeable Control is using a BAS controller to position the 3 to 5 second actuator, it is recommended that the BAS tune or "optimize" the coefficients of the PID control Loop. By doing this, you will extend the life of the actuator and reduce the position time of the supply and exhaust valve as it varies based on fume hood demand. As controllers may vary, one specific approach to programming and tuning for a fast response system like this is not practical. Instead, please use the following guidelines. Programming 1. Use raw, unfiltered valve feedback for PID control. Do not attempt to "condition" the feedback signal. Feedback is stable. The PID can perform better with unconditioned feedback. 2. As with any PID control, a custom piece of code will be needed to run the valve s actuator control efficiently. The following guidelines should be considered when developing BAS code. a. Limit the control signal from exceeding the speed of the actuator (use 25%/second). b. Build in a dead band to prevent actuator from constantly modulating (use approximately 1% of desired airflow). c. Limit control signal to small adjustments every second, when feedback is within 5% of desired airflow. d. The feedback from the flow card is nonlinear, meaning that the CFM increases more per 1% actuator command at higher percentages than lower. To help the control at both the high and low end, scale the tuning factors based upon airflow feedback. When the actuator is more open, the tuning factors are smaller as smaller changes are desired. When the actuator is more closed, the tuning factors are larger as larger changes are desired. 3. It is likely that code developed for one type (supply versus Gex) and size of BxV can be copied and used on other valves of the same type and size. Tuning the PID Loop 1. To start - Kp should be very small or even Start with a small Ki and test the response to a typical change in setpoint. 3. Increase Ki and continue to test until output is unstable, then decrease value. 4. Add Kd last and only if there is undesirable overshoot, start small and slowly increase until satisfactory Phoenix Controls. Specifications subject to change without notice.
