Never fuel the machine with the engine running. Fuel the engine at least 3 metres away from your work area. Always fuel your machine outdoors. Only use 4-stroke engine oil. DO NOT USE automotive or marine oil. (REFER TO THE BRIGGS & STRATTON ENGINE MANUAL FOR OIL CAPACITIES) Unscrew the fuel cap slowly and fill the fuel tank with good quality unleaded petrol to a maximum of 80% capacity. This will allow the fuel tank expansion. Fasten the fuel cap tightly, being careful not to cross-thread. This will also prevent loosening through vibration during use. Wipe away any spillage, with an appropriate material. If the machine has continued leaks, the product should not be started. Never use the machine with damaged ignition cable or spark plug cap, as there is a risk of sparks. Fuel which is older than 30 days old can become stale and cause acid & gum deposits in the fuel system or essential carburetor components. This could result in starting issues which would not be covered by your manufacturer s warranty. To keep fuel fresh, we recommend you use HANDY PARTS SURE START FUEL ADDITIVE (HP-199) which is available in 250ml bottles, for 25 litres of fuel. SURE START FUEL ADDITIVE (HP-199) Helps make machines easier to start Extends shelf life of petrol up to 2 years Keeps carburettor & engine clean Reduces emissions & increases fuel economy IMPORTANT Ensure that any stored petrol/oil mixture is clearly marked in a separate appropriate canister for a maximum of 4-6 weeks. If the machine is not going to be used for a long period, drain the mixture from the fuel tank, start the engine and drain the carburetor of any remaining fuel. GEARBOX GREASE The gearbox is shipped from the factory WITH grease. See the Maintenance section for seasonal checks.

KNOW YOUR MACHINE TINE CLUTCH LEVER THROTTLE CONTROL LEVER UPPER HANDLE HANDLE ADJUSTMENT KNOB LOWER HANDLE DEPTH REGULATOR ROD TRANSPORT WHEELS OUTER TINE INNER TINE BELT GUARD THROTTLE CONTROL Controls the engine speed and stops the engine. TINE CLUTCH CONTROL Push down to engage the tines forward. Releasing returns the machine to neutral. TRANSPORT WHEELS Set the wheels down and the depth regulator rod will curve up when transporting the tiller. Tilt the machine back until the tines clear the ground. Push or pull the unit to the next location. HANDLE ADJUSTMENT KNOBS Provides different handle heights for different tilling conditions. Loosen both handle adjustment knobs and pivot hand to desired height. Tighten knobs. DEPTH REGULATOR ROD Lowering the depth regulator rod will slow the tiller and make it till deeper. Raising the rod will allow it to move faster and till shallower. Do not adjust the tilling depth unless the clutch lever is in the neutral position.

OPERATION STARTING THE ENGINE The engine is shipped from the factory without oil. You must add engine oil before starting engine. Add oil as instructed by the Briggs & Stratton Engine Manual packed separately with your tiller. Fill the engine to the correct level with good quality SAE 30 4 stroke engine oil. Fill the fuel tank with unleaded petrol, in accordance with the engine manual which is enclosed with the tiller. Take care to wipe up any spillages with a cloth. Press the primer bulb 3 times to allow fuel into the engine (for a cold start, press 5 times). Set the throttle lever to FAST. Hold the start handle firmly and pull rope out a short distance until you feel some resistance. Then pull the rope briskly and smoothly to start the engine. Allow the rope to return gently. If necessary, pull the rope several times until the engine starts. Allow the machine to idle for a short period before commencing work. Move the machine to the working area, remove the transport wheels and set the depth rod to the required setting. Hold the handles firmly and gently squeeze the clutch lever to engage the tines and move forward. IDLE SPEED Set the throttle control lever to the SLOW position to reduce stress on the engine when not tilling. Lowering the engine speed will extend the life of the engine and conserve fuel. SHUTTING DOWN: Set the clutch control lever to the neutral position to stop the tines. Set the throttle control lever to the STOP position to stop the engine. OPERATING SPEED: For normal tilling, set the throttle control lever to FAST. If the soil is particularly hard it may be necessary to change the speed to SLOW to allow the tines to dig down into the hard soil. Putting pressure on the handles will encourage the tines to dig deeper, whereas releasing the pressure will allow for shallower digging. The best tilling depth is mm (4-6 ). For cultivating around existing plants to loosen the soil, set the depth rod to 50mm (2 ) or less. TILLING OR CULTIVATING: Tilling is digging in, turning over and breaking up garden soil and preparing a seedbed for planting. The best tilling depth is 100mm (4 ) to 150mm (6 ). A tiller will also clear the soil of unwanted vegetation. The decomposition of this vegetation matter enriches the soil. Cultivating is loosening or digging around growing plants to disrupt weeds and aerate soil. Less than 50mm (2 ) depth is desirable. Avoid tilling soil that is too dry as it will be pulverised and produce dust that will not hold water. Conversely, tilling soil that is too wet will produce unsatisfactory clods. Better growth will be obtained if an area is tilled properly and used soon after tilling to preserve the moisture content.

In some soils, it may be necessary to pass the tiller over two or three times. In which case, lower the depth rod a little further each time, and if possible cultivate across the length and width of the garden alternately. If the tiller stops, rock the handles from side to side to start it moving again. The type of soil and working conditions will determine the actual setting of the tilling depth. In some soils the desired depth is reached with the first till. With other soils the desired depth will only be obtained by going over it two or three times. The depth regulator rod should be lowered before each pass over the garden. Passes should be made across the length and width of the garden alternately. Do not try to dig too deep in the first pass. If the machine jumps or bucks, allow the unit to move forward at a faster rate. Any rocks which are turned up should be removed from the garden area. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING Keeping your tiller in top running condition will prolong its life and help you obtain optimum performance whenever you wish to till your garden. Clean the underside of the tiller after each use. It is easier to clean it off immediately after use before any soil has had time to dry. Turn off the engine and allow to cool down. Keep the throttle position in the STOP position and remove the spark plug. Remove all vegetation, string and other debris which has accumulated around the axle and tines. Wipe off the tiller afterwards and apply a light coat of oil or silicone to prevent rusting or water damage. Replace the spark plug. Never use a pressure washer to clean the tiller as water can penetrate the tiller and cause damage to the transmission and engine. Do not use strong detergents of petroleum based cleaners when cleaning plastic parts. Chemicals can damage plastics At least once a season remove the tines, clean and apply oil to the tines and shafts. At the beginning of the season ensure that there is sufficient lubricant inside the gearbox housing. Ensure the machine is switched off. Ensure the gearbox is cool before filling with grease. Remove the right-side tines and place tiller on level surface. Remove the grease fitting screw and fill the worm gear housing until grease begins to come out. Do not overfill. Use a portable tool lithium grease, such as EP-O grease. 100ml (0.12kg) will fill the gearbox from empty. Too much grease can create pressure which could damage seals. Refit the grease fitting screw.

If the machine is not being used for at least six weeks: Drain the fuel tank completely of petrol by allowing the engine to run until it stops. Allow the engine to cool, remove the spark plug and put a few drops of high quality motor oil into the cylinder. Pull the starter rope a few times to distribute the oil. Replace the spark plug. Clean off the outside of the tiller to keep the vents free of dust. Remove the tines. Clean and apply oil to the tines and shafts before reassembling the tines. Oil the control cables and all visible moving parts. Do not remove the engine cover. Inspect the tiller for any loose or damaged parts. Repair or replace and tighten any loose screws, nuts or bolts. To store with the handles folded down, loosen the knobs that secure the upper and lower handles. Fold the upper handle down being careful not to crimp any of the control cables. Tighten the knobs. Do not store the tiller with fuel in a non-ventilated area where fuel fumes may reach flames, sparks or any other ignition sources. STORAGE & TRANSPORT STORAGE WARNING Make sure that unauthorised persons do not have access to the device! Store the machine is a dry place Store away from direct sunlight Do not store anything above or near the machine, where anyone might stand on the machine to reach them. Keep the machine away from children and others not qualified to use it. TRANSPORT Secure the device against slipping. When shipping, use the original packaging if possible.
