1 Out with the old and in with the new. The concept sounds simple enough, but the methods of achieving vehicle fluid exchange can vary widely. At its most tedious and labor-intensive, this can involve manual draining, disassembly of the component or system in question, manual cleaning and inspection, reassembly and the introduction of fresh fluid. At its theoretical best, fluid exchange can involve a relatively simple connection of the component system to a service unit, with the process accomplished at the touch of a button. While such technology may be available, is automated fluid exchange always the best route? That may very well depend on the specific vehicle system and the technician s own viewpoint. Fluid extraction (removal) equipment is always helpful, especially for such things as coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid and differential lube. This equipment, whether simple or technologically advanced, comes in darned handy to remove fluids from a system without making a mess on the shop floor (not to mention on your hands, arms and clothing). Fluid flushing equipment, especially with regard to cooling systems and brake systems, offers an efficient method of cleansing these systems of old fluid and contaminants. Brake systems can definitely benefit from the use of an efficient flushing/exchange unit. As we all know, consumers rarely consider the condition of their brake fluid. Over time, brake fluid breaks down due to moisture buildup. Any increase of moisture content reduces the fluid s boiling point. Interaction with the brake system components also causes an accumulation of tiny metal particles and other harmful contaminants. Many technicians would agree that brake fluid should be changed according to the vehicle manufacturer s maintenance schedule, or once each year as a rule of thumb. Extraction/flushing/refilling equipment designed for power steering systems and gear cases also offers both convenience and component life benefits, since these are typically difficult-to- Out With the Old, In With the New FLUID EXCHANGE EQUIPMENT PART 1 access applications that would otherwise require removal and complete disassembly in order to accomplish proper draining and cleaning. We ve divided this article into two parts, due to the large number of equipment manufacturers and individual pieces of equipment. This month, we ll cover brake system equipment, transmission, power steering and driveline service equipment and universal fluid flushing/evac equipment. We ll return with coolant and engine oil service equipment in a near-future issue. BY MIKE MAVRIGIAN Vehicle fluid exchange equipment comes in mighty handy for quickly removing and installing fluids without making a mess on the shop floor, or on your hands, arms and clothing. Brake System Service BG Products offers its BG PF7 Brake Service System for quick brake fluid flushing and fluid replacement. The PF7 will quickly and effectively flush all oxidized and corrosive fluid from the entire braking system. A visible indicator informs the technician when refilling is needed. Used brake fluid is captured and contained in a 2.5-gal. jug. The vehicle battery-powered Flo- Dynamics BrakeMate offers a fully automatic flushing machine that can service all four wheels in under nine min- 24 February 2007

2 utes. It simultaneously fills and vacuums the brake system to provide an efficient, safe and thorough brake system flush. Five steps are required: clean out the master cylinder, connect the special master cylinder adapter, connect the four hoses, open all four bleeder valves and start the machine. No flipping of switches it s all automatic. A complete master cylinder adapter set and 15-ft. lines are included. The new-fluid tank holds 7 qts. and the waste-fluid tank holds 20 qts. MotorVac Technologies offers its FluidVac MFV 1000, a multipurpose fluid extractor and exchanger that can be used to remove a variety of fluids, including differential lube, engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid or engine coolant. Features include pressure regulation, a pressure gauge, illuminated controls and an air-powered pump. Phoenix Systems offers a wide array of brake bleeding and flushing equipment, among which are the V-12 Injector, Maxpro and Power-Ject kits. The V-12 Injector performs reverse Photo courtesy Mityvac fluid injection (RFI), vacuum/pressure bleeding and master cylinder bench bleeding. It s a redesign of the V-10 Injector, with a smaller piston diameter that provides a high hydraulic advantage. The V-12 can develop 125 psi with comfortable hand force, and features a cushion grip and an end-cap quick coupler. The V-12 is compatible with all types of brake fluid. The Phoenix Maxpro is touted as a heavy-duty steel and die-cast aluminum tool designed for the technician who handles four or five brake and clutch jobs daily. It s also designed to address complex hydraulic system bleeding requirements. The Maxpro handles RFI, vacuum, pressure, pulse generation and bench and cross bleeding. According to Phoenix, the Maxpro is approved by GM, Raybestos and the military. It can develop 150 psi of injection pressure with a 15mL injection dosage. The modular construction of this unit allows it to interface with Phoenix s full line of adapters and accessories. The Power-Ject works like other Phoenix brake fluid injectors, but is pneumatically operated, eliminating the need to hand-pump. Flushing or bleeding is accomplished with the push of a button. This unit is said to perform all known bleeding and flushing procedures. RTI Technologies offers two part numbers for brake system service the FHS-100 Brake Bleeder & Flusher and the advanced roll-around BFX-1 Brake Flush System unit. Although referred to as a Brake Bleeder & Flusher, the FHS-100 may also be used for a variety of automotive fluid removals and fills. It s a simple hand-held fluid pot that will either remove or deliver fluid (changeover is simple, with a quick turn of the control knob), and includes an extraction tube for dipstick tube applications, a brake fluid bleeder, a general-purpose tube with shut-off valve and semirigid flex end, and a rigid tube attachment for filling of front or rear differentials, transmissions, transfer cases and pumps. The RTI BFX-1 is a dedicated brake system service center. Operating on 12VDC (10 amps), this unit features a 1.6-gal. vacuum pump diaphragm and a 1.4-gal. fill pump diaphragm. Fluid tank capacities include a 5-gal. tank for used February

3 FLUID EXCHANGE EQUIPMENT PART 1 Flo-Dynamics BrakeMate fluid and a 1-gal. tank for new fluid (it also will accept original brake fluid bottles). Universal adapters are included to handle all popular master cylinders. Other features include logical controls with intuitive layout, automatic shut-off and illuminated warning lights when the new tank is empty or when the used tank is full and a convenient pistol wand for quick and accurate master cylinder filling. The unit works on all ABS and non-abs systems and is capable of performing OEM recommended bleeding sequences. Mityvac offers several units designed to bleed (including removal of old fluid and addition of new fluid) brake and clutch systems. The MV6838 Master Vacuum Brake Bleed Kit is claimed to be the firm s most complete vacuum brake bleeding and master cylinder refill kit available. It features an MV6830 Vacuum Brake Bleeder, combined with the MVA6836 master cylinder auto-refill kit. It requires compressed air for operation. Two refill kit styles ensure a fit to all makes and models of vehicles. The MV6830 Vacuum Brake Bleeder unit (compressed-air operated) offers brake and clutch bleeding capabilities and simple operation. Featured is an integrated 1.9-qt. collection reservoir, variable-control thumb throttle, automatic overflow protection, a quick-connect coupler for accessories, a hanging hook, 6-ft. bleed hose, 4-ft. evacuation hose, universal bleed screw adapters and a quiet, muffled exhaust. Model MV6835 extends the capabilities of the MV6830 vacuum brake bleeder by including the MVA6832 Clamp-On Auto-Refill Kit. While the bleeder can evacuate up to 2 qts. per minute, the refill kit ensures that the master cylinder does not run dry of new fluid. The MVA6832 auto-refill kit uses gravity to automatically refill the master cylinder during vacuum or manual hydraulic brake or clutch bleeding/flushing. Included is a 40-oz. reservoir that mounts on top of the master cylinder and clamps securely to the wall. As old brake fluid is bled from the system through the bleed screws, new fluid automatically flows from the unit s reservoir to replenish the master cylinder. In addition, Mityvac offers its Pressure Bleeder, a manually operated unit that allows pressure bleeding without the need for expensive adapters. It s also designed for filling differentials, transfer cases, transmissions and more. Manual pump operation requires no shop air or electricity. Features include trigger operation with fluid control, an integrated 2-qt. dispensing reservoir and a large neck for easy refilling. A separate 16-oz. collection reservoir and flex-wand with universal pressure bleeding and flushing adapter are also included. Snap-on Tools Brake Flushing Machine (Stock No. EEBR311A) is designed to perform an automatic fluid extraction/clean, flush and refill/system bleed. The comprehensive process is said to clean and diagnose in 10 to 12 minutes. Flushing is performed with pulsating pressure at the master cylinder reservoir and vacuum at all four bleeders at once. The unit connects to the master cylinder via special adapters. Snap-on also offers smaller portable diaphragm MotorVac FluidVac MFV 1000 Phoenix Systems Power-Ject and nondiaphragm brake bleeder units. The Wynn s BrakeTech Rapid Fluid Exchange Machine (Part No ) uses a combination of pressure at the master cylinder and vacuum at the wheel cylinders to provide a complete brake system flush, either via individual or simultaneous bleeding of all four wheels. Individual color-coded toggle switches are provided. A new-fluid container float switch prevents emptying of the master cylinder reservoir. The unit is powered by the vehicle battery and is compatible with conventional and ABS brake systems. Adapters for use on virtually all vehicles are provided. Transmission Service BG Products offers three transmission fluid exchange units, including the PF5, Big Dawg II and Big Dawg. The BG PF5 Power Flush and Fluid Exchange System dissolves and removes harmful deposits from critical transmission components and exchanges the old oxidized ATF for new fluid in about five to seven minutes, according to BG. This unit is fully automatic and requires no monitoring. When the exchange is complete, the unit switches to bypass mode and sends the incoming new fluid through its normal route back to the transmission. The old fluid is safely captured inside the unit. The BG PF5 has no power supply of any kind and no scheduled maintenance is required. It comes complete with all adapters needed to connect to most vehicles. 4 FLUID EXCHANGE EQUIPMENT PART 1 Mityvac MV6838 Master Vacuum Brake Bleed Kit plications from small passenger cars to medium-capacity, heavy-duty trucks. This unit can service all automatic transmissions up through a 42-qt. capacity in as little as two minutes. Fluid exchange is fully automatic and power is supplied via the transmission s pump. The new Big Dawg High Capacity Flush and Fluid Exchange unit can, according to BG, handle the exchange of 14 gals. of ATF in less than one minute. The Clore Automotive T-TECH TT400 ATF Exchange System exchanges virtually all of a vehicle s transmission fluid, according to its manufacturer. The vehicle transmission regulates the exchange process and a 12-volt onboard pump speeds cylinder filling. The unit features a rugged case design, enhanced storage space and a side pocket to hold manuals. Other features include auto-alignment for fast hookups, autobypass mode when service is completed, 23 standard fittings and leak-free, drybreak, quick-connect couplers. Models TT100 and TT500 ATF exchangers also are offered. The Flo-Dynamics Model TS410 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger features fully automatic operation, and a 2.5-gpm pump ensures rapid exchanges. The unit uses the vehicle s battery for power. No pit, lift, ramp or auxiliary power supply are required. Two inline 10-micron absolute fluid filters capture microscopic particles and contaminants. Easy-to-use adapters allow quick hookup to virtually any make and model vehicle. Clear service hoses give visual confirmation of new and used fluid movement. The remove fluid feature allows easier and cleaner removal of the pan for a filter change when necessary. Waste fluid can be drained from the unit at the touch of a button. There s no need to turn the machine upside down. Four capacity selections (4, 12, 16 and 20 qts.) allow for specified amounts of automatic transmission fluid to be pumped through the transmission. The company s battery-powered Model TSD450 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger with Dipstick Mode connects to the cooler lines or through the dipstick tube. This gives the operator the option of a full fluid exchange or a fast dipstick process. Fully automatic operation and a new 2.5-gpm pump ensure rapid exchanges. The unit also has two 10-micron fluid filters, adapter hoses, clear service hoses and an easyaccess service panel. The Flo-Dynamics ProMax40 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger with Cooler Flush Option features fully automatic operation and a large 46-qt. capacity. The unit has many of the features of the other units and performs 16-, 20-, 28- and 40-qt. exchanges with a 2.5-gpm pump. Both standard and Allison adapter sets are included. MotorVac s TransTech 1000 is designed to perform a fast and basic automatic transmission fluid exchange. It connects via the transmission dipstick tube for easy access. This portable machine includes an audible high fluid alarm, electric circuit protection and an illuminated display, as well as a high-volume fluid pump, affording quick extraction and emptying of the waste tank. MotorVac also offers its FluidVac Snap-on Tools EEBR311A Brake Flushing Machine BG Products PF5 Power Flush and Fluid Exchange System MFV 1000, a multipurpose fluid extractor and exchanger that can be used to remove a variety of fluids, including differential lube, engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid or engine coolant. Features include pressure regulation, a pressure gauge, illuminated controls and an air-powered pump. RTI has introduced its ATX-2 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger, which features 12VDC operation, a 4- qt.-per-minute positive displacement gear pump, two 26-qt. tanks (one for old fluid and one for new fluid), and microprocessor controls with digital keypad and light-emitting diodes. Average process time for a full exchange is two to five minutes. For multifluid capability, one type of transmission fluid may be removed with the push of a button and replaced with a different type. An integrated pressure gauge measures transmission pressure as a diagnostic aid. Color-coded quick-connect adapters, along with a reference chart, aid in vehicle hookups. RTI s ATX-2PS Combo Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid Exchanger is also available, designed to accommodate both transmission and power steering service. Snap-on offers its Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger TransKare 1 (Stock No. EETF305A). This unit is designed to extract and replace transmission fluid through the transmission dipstick tube for a simple fluid exchange. The unit may also be used to drain the transmission prior to servicing the pan, filter, etc. A high flow rate permits most automatic transmission fluid exchanges in about 10 minutes. 5 FLUID EXCHANGE EQUIPMENT PART 1 RTI ATX-2 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger SPX Robinair Transmission Fluid Exchanger control panel provides a step-by-step guide, and bright seven-segment LED displays keep the technician informed regarding function, fluid volume in and out, process progression and service count. The unit operates on 12VDC. Snap-on also offers its Heavy Duty Exchanger Model MFX HD35 (Stock No. EETF304A) that handles both automatic transmission and power steering fluid exchange. Tank capacity is 40 qts. Complete ATF exchange is reportedly eight minutes or less. Unlike the Trans- Kare 1 that removes and adds fluid via the dipstick tube, this unit connects to the transmission cooler lines (without the need to remove the pan). The unit s power steering service features include the ability to replace up to 95% of the old power steering fluid in minutes. Old fluid drains directly into the unit s waste tank. A compartment for a new-fluid bottle allows easy addition of new fluid. To top off its lineup of transmission fluid exchangers, Snap-on also offers its Heavy Duty Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchanger Model FX HD35 (Stock No. EETF303A). This unit offers 100% fluid replacement in eight minutes or less. The 40-qt. capacity unit connects directly to transmission cooler lines and is heavy-duty-capable with the addition of the optional Allison Transmission Medium Duty Truck hose kit. The SPX Robinair Transmission Fluid Exchanger offers three modes of operation dipstick only, cooler line or a combination of the two. The unit has a 32-qt. supply tank and a 34-qt. waste tank and exchange accuracy of approximately 1 4 qt. for adding or subtracting fluid from the pan. A complete set of cooler line adapters for most foreign and domestic vehicles is included. It cannot be hooked up backwards and it works with all types of automatic transmission fluid. The Drain Waste feature automatically pumps used fluid from the machine into a waste oil container. The White Industries ATX Automatic Transmission Fluid X-Changer connects to transmissions through the cooler line and provides a clean, safe and automated method of transmission fluid replacement. Using the vehicle s own transmission pump, the unit removes fluid normally held by the torque converter, clutch drums and valve body. This provides a thorough transmission fluid exchange in less time. The unit filters the new and used fluid with 10-micron filters. An auto bypass valve prevents the transmission from running out of fluid. A Flo-Dynamics PSX-2000 Power Steering Fluid X-Changer low fluid alarm and indicator light alert the operator. An Empty Waste button automatically pumps the used fluid from the machine into a waste oil container. A set of cooler line adapters is provided for most foreign and domestic vehicles. The portable, battery-powered Wynn s TranServe II+ Automatic Transmission Flush & Fill Machine (Part No ) flushes contaminated fluid from the transmission, torque converter, cooler and cooler lines, and refills the system with fresh ATF in about 10 minutes, even on low-flow vehicles. An automatic flow rectifier directs flow to and from the transmission, regardless of hook-up direction to cooler lines. An automatic safety loop prevents transmission damage and a lighted flow meter allows you to observe fluid color change during the process. The unit automatically adds the same amount of new ATF as was removed, without monitoring or adjustments. The reservoir allows the exchange of up to 11.5 gals. of fluid, and can perform multiple services. An automatic safety switch sends ATF through its normal loop route back to the transmission when the TranServe II+ tank is empty. Color- and number-coded adapters with a dripless disconnect are provided for most vehicles. Power Steering Service BG Products Power Steering Service Center is designed for clean-up of both conventional sector and rack & pinion power steering units. 6 ation without entrapment of air within the components. Engine Clean Technology offers two power steering service units the RX Model 1000 and the RX Model 555. The RX Model 1000 operates on 12VDC or shop air and completes a power steering fluid exchange in five minutes. The unit performs an exact 1:1 fluid exchange ratio no overfills or underfills. Clear tubes allow visual confirmation of fluid exchange, which can be performed while turning the steering wheel. Multifluid capacity provides easy change between different power steering fluids. The RX Model 555 exchanges 1 to 4 pts. of new fluid in less than five minutes with a 1:1 fluid exchange ratio. The transparent yellow hoses allow a visual confirmation of the fluid exchange process and are fuel- and oil-rated. Fluid transfer is accomplished by two selfpriming flowjet pumps. Flo-Dynamics offers three different power steering fluid exchangers. The PSX-2000 Power Steering Fluid X- Changer is a basic hand-held unit that replaces up to 95% of the old power steering fluid in less than eight minutes. The battery-powered unit has new- and used-fluid reservoirs and clear hoses for visual confirmation of fluid movement. Dual pumps and service hoses drain and refill power steering fluid through the system s reservoir. The PSX-2500 Power Steering Fluid X-Changer offers many of the features of the PSX-2000, mounted on a roll-around cart that holds the unit at an ergonomically correct working height. Unlike continuous-flow fluid exchangers, this unit allows you to control the fluid volume, reducing the amount of wasted material. A fingertip control pendant allows fast operation of the battery-powered fluid changer. MotorVac s FluidVac MFV 1000 is a multipurpose fluid extractor and exchanger that can be used to remove a variety of fluids, including differential lube, engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid or engine coolant. Features include pressure regulation, a pressure gauge, illuminated controls and an air-powered pump. RTI s PSX-2 Power Steering Fluid Exchanger directly connects to the vehicle s power steering fluid reservoir. Once connection is made, simply flip a switch to begin either extracting or adding fluid. A clear two-channel hose provides a visual reference for monitoring old-fluid removal and new-fluid injection. The unit is powered by 12VDC (4 amps). Usedand new-fluid tanks provide a capacity of 1 gal. each. The used-fluid pump moves 1 gpm, as does the new-fluid pump. Three models are available the PSX-2 with cart, the PSX-2A for adding onto an RTI ATX-2 ATF unit and the PSX-2B economy bench-top version without cart. The ATX-2PS Combo Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid Exchanger is also available to handle both transmission and power steering service applications. Snap-on s Model MFX HD35 handles both automatic transmission fluid and power steering fluid. See the details about this machine in this article s transmission section. Wynn s offers its Power Steering Flush Machine in toolbox (Part No ) and roll-around (Part No ) configurations. Both allow draining and refilling of the power steering system through the power steering fluid reservoir. According to the manufacturer, 95% of the old power steering fluid is replaced. Separate on-board pumps are provided for new and used fluid, and the unit operates on vehicle battery power. Clore Automotive Viper Universal Flushing System Driveline Service BG Products 939 Drive Line Service Center removes old fluids and installs new fluid in front-drive manual transmissions, all rear-drive differentials and 4WD transfer cases. This system can pump gear oils and additives or be used to transfer lighter oils such as ATF. BG s Drive Line Service Center allows instant switching from fluid removal mode to new-fluid installation from different containers. It carries its own used-fluid tank and handles new fluid or additive in containers from small squeeze tubes to 16-gal. drums. The powerful gear-drive pump allows the handling of heavier lubes faster at lower temperatures. MotorVac offers its FluidVac MFV 1000, a multipurpose fluid extractor and exchanger that can be used to remove a variety of fluids, including differential lube, engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid or engine coolant. Features include pressure regulation, a pressure gauge, illuminated controls an air-powered pump. RTI s DFX-1 Differential Fluid Exchanger is designed to handle all gear oils including 75-90W through W (both conventional and synthetic). Operating on 120VAC, process time is reportedly 10 to 15 minutes on average. The fluid tank capacity is 1 gal. Vacula Series DX 12 Universal Fluid Extractor The vehicle battery-powered Wynn s Diffserve Differential Fluid Service Machine (Part No ) evacuates and refills fluid via the differential fill plug opening. Separate rocker switch-activated pumps are provided for new and used-fluid and a trigger-operated newfluid delivery nozzle. Used fluid is contained on-board and is removed via an on-board used-fluid pump. A control panel-mounted valve and pump switch control waste fluid removal. The Diffserve unit also can be used for manual gearbox and transfer case fluid changes. Universal Fluid Flushing/Evac Equipment Clore Automotive offers its Viper Universal Flushing System (Part No ), designed to flush debris and contaminants from a variety of components, including a/c condensers and engine oil, transmission and power steering coolers. Powered by shop air, this system features a pulsating action to provide superior results. The 1-gal.-capacity system works with most any flushing solution and features a 100-psi safety pop-off valve and a safety gun trigger lock. The kit includes a flush storage container, flush gun, three adapter tips, return hose and a used-flush collection pail. According to Clore, this kit may also be used for degreasing components or even degreasing a vehicle s underside. Mityvac offers four compact units capable of evacuating a variety of fluids, including coolant, engine oil, transaxle grease, brake fluid, power steering fluid and transmission fluid. Included here are Models MV7430, 07300, and Model MV7430 is a mini fluid evacuator featuring a 1.9-qt. reservoir that operates on compressed air, creating a powerful vacuum designed to empty small reservoirs. Model is a pneumatic vacuum unit with a larger vertical 2.3-gal. reservoir. This includes accessories for draining engine oil or transmission fluid directly through dipstick tubes, as well as a brake/clutch bleeding kit for vacuum bleeding. The compressed air connection is located at the unit base for added stability. Model Fluid Evacuator features a manually operated vacuum pump, making it 32 February 2007

Model Evacuator Plus (also manually operated) offers both evacuation and dispensing modes. In addition to these units, Mityvac also offers a full line of hand vacuum pumps, in both metal and composite construction, with and without built-in gauges. All Mityvac hand pumps produce vacuum and pressure, and include MotorVac Technologies ; Phoenix Systems RTI Technologies, Inc Snap-on Tools Corp SPX Robinair ; Vacula Automotive Products White Industries Wynn Oil Co ports for accessing both. These pumps produce pressure on the spring-actuated return stroke. Snap-on offers two fluid evacuators, including a pneumatic model (Stock No. VAC300) with 2.3-gal. capacity and a manually operated model (Stock No. VAC201), also with a 2.3-gal. capacity. Each unit is capable of removing engine oil, transmission oil, coolant, brake fluid and gear oil. The pneumatic unit is designed for fluid evacuation only, while the manual unit can be used for both evacuation and dispensing. Vacula has recently introduced its new Series DX 12, a universal fluid extractor designed to handle a wide variety of nonflammable fluids, including even aggressive types of brake fluid. The DX 12 extracts fluids quickly via a vacuum while generating a slight overpressure to empty the unit s fluid canister. A built-in silencer function protects workers by guarding against excessive noise levels.
