2 BOLD = CHANGE STOCK DIVISION RULES ALL new and existing cars must be updated to the LATEST set of rules for the division The Soap Box Derby program is designed expressly for parents and their children. A parent/guardian or adult is expected to help in the construction of the car. The adult must not build the car for the child, but share this experience by being there and giving help only when and if needed. This program is meant to be an enjoyable learning experience for both parent/guardian and child, and provide them with the opportunity to develop mutual respect and trust, and demonstrate the importance of individual pride and sportsmanship. The "Let's Go Racing" booklet must be followed when assembling your Stock Division Car. Also, refer to the Common Rules section of the All-American Soap Box Derby Rule Book for general racing rules. AGE LIMITS See 2006 Rule Book S-1 ASSEMBLY RULES The Stock Car must be built exactly as set forth in the most current plans and specifications. No changes or additions may be made to the car. The Stock Car is a sit-up car designed for builders ages The driver must sit in a lean forward position at all times. You must build the Stock Car purchased from the International Soap Box Derby, Inc. The hardware provided in the kit must be used and the parts assembled as shown in the plans. All missing or damaged parts that are manufactured solely for the AASBD must be replaced with parts from the AASBD. The Stock Car hardware (Stock shell is also classified as hardware) may be passed on and re-used under the following conditions: 1) The Derby Director must certify the removal of the hardware and Stock shell from the floorboard; 2) If a car participated in an All-American Local and/or Rally Championship in Akron, the car, nor any part of the car, will not be permitted to race in another Official Soap Box Derby race by another participant. 3) Car must be updated to the latest rules. REMEMBER, if not specifically stated in the plans or Rule Book, YOU CANNOT DO IT! Innovation in the Stock Car Division is not permitted. (See rulebook for further clarifications) S-2 PARTS All required parts needed for the assembly of your Stock Division racer are included in your kit packaged by the AASBD with the exception of Z-Glas Racing Wheels. These and any optional parts sold are the only parts allowed in the car. No alterations are permitted to these parts unless otherwise specified. Replacement parts are available through the AASBD office. Parts are sold in bags specified for each area of the car. Only the items that are exclusively designed for the AASBD are sold as individual parts (not in bags). The following replacement parts may be purchased at your local hardware store as long as they are IDENTICAL to those parts issued by the AASBD: A1, A2, B, C, D, E1, G1, G2, G3, H1, I, J, K1, K2, M, O, P, Q, S, V, W, Y, Z Elevator bolts and 5/16 carriage bolts and 5/16 elevator bolts. (See drawings for detailed description of each part). S-3 WEIGHT a. Combined Weight - Combined weight of the car and driver cannot exceed 200 pounds with Z-Glas wheels. b. Added Weight - The car may be increased to the maximum combined weight of the driver and car by the addition of metal or wood. The additional weight must be securely bolted through the floorboard with 5/16" diameter bolts and must pass all safety requirements of the inspection committee. There are SEVEN predrilled locations for weight. These are the ONLY locations that can be used. Two 6" x 5/16 carriage bolts, washers and wing nuts are supplied for the front and rear of the car; THESE TWO BOLTS ARE THE ONLY AREA FOR ADJUSTABLE WEIGHT (Do not trim bolts). If additional weight is needed in the center location, you will use 3 x 5/16" elevator bolts (trim for safety), nuts and washers like the ones shown in Figure 8.2. Weight between the legs and any type of seat will have a maximum height of 1-1/2" off the floorboard. THIS AREA IS NOT FOR ADJUSTABLE WEIGHT! If bar bell style weights are used, the large center hole must be filled or a dowel rod must be used until the weights fit securely on the 5/16 weight bolt. Shifting or any type of movement in the weights is prohibited. 2
3 c. Prohibited Weight - Added weight must not be permanently attached, and must not touch in anyway to give support to the sides of the car. Added weight in the forms of angles, channels, tees and so forth (structural shapes) is not permitted. Added weight in the form of bars, plates, or flat shapes will be permitted but must not be longer than 12" lengthwise and must be stacked evenly on each other in the car. Weight may not be linked in a chain like manner that would be considered as giving support to the car. No pouring of molten metal into the car is permitted. Moveable or loose weight is not allowed. Weight will not be placed over the axles or within 1" of the axles or radius rods (Fig. 10.1). There must be a minimum clearance of 1/8" around the wooden radius rod block and between the two weights in the cockpit area. Use only the weight bolt holes that are provided. No additional holes or attachments will be allowed. d. Weight - All weight used in the car must be painted and the weight of each piece must be clearly marked. If any weight is used in the car, there must be adjustable weight on the front and/or rear 6 bolts. The amount of required adjustable weight is ten pounds, (3-two pound, 3-one pound, and 2-eight ounce). Note: There must be a 5/16" washer on all weight bolts. (1 ¼ x 5/16 ) Note: There is a weight free zone between the original holes of the footrest and brake pedal back to the steering pulleys. Note: All weight must be removable without disconnecting or removing any components, and weight may not conceal any components. WEIGHTS MAY NOT BE THREADED ON TO THE WEIGHT BOLT. S-4 AXLES a. You must use the pre-drilled axles provided by the AASBD with no alterations. Sanding, filing, or shaving axles to reduce dimensions is not permitted. It is permitted to use steel wool to remove rust from the axle square stock and spindles. Pre-bowing and bending of square stock is NOT PERMITTED. Bending of round spindles to achieve alignment is permitted. Drilling, peening, painting, coating, polishing, bluing, or rusting, etc. of the of the square stock of the axles is prohibited unless otherwise stated. Thin coatings of rubbed-out auto wax or oils are permitted to prevent rusting. b. The All-American may drop kingpins to ascertain proper assembly of the bushing and the kingpin. If the kingpin holes, bushing holes, or the axle holes have been altered, the car WILL be disqualified. Bushing length must be maintained. If altered, and the floorboard was damaged during removal, replace floorboard as well. c. Alignment - To adjust cross bind, you may use one complete, uncut, feeler gauge under or between washers as in fig A small nail at each end of the feeler gauge to hold the gauge in place is permitted. Only one feeler gauge can be used per stock car with placement at either the front or the rear axle. d. No epoxy, glue or loctite is permitted. (Except to install bushing J1 for the kingpin and bushings under stabilizer block in the floorboard.) S-5 LETTERING AND DECORATIONS No painting whatsoever is permitted in this division except for airfoils. Airfoils may be painted but cannot be covered with mactac material or decals. Any sponsor advertising, logo, lettering, and/or decorations must be applied with Mactac (or similar stick-on material), decals, or with felt-tipped markers. Any stick-on letters or decorations must be cutout. The shell can be covered to the bottom edge. You cannot cover the axles, radius rods, steering cable openings, or any screws, a width of 3" on the nose, the seam between the floorboard and shell, and/or bottom of the car with Mactac or similar material. Marking or Mactac is not permitted on the floorboard. SPIRIT OF THE RULES The All-American Soap Box Derby Rules are intended to provide fair and uniform regulations governing competitions. These rules create competitive opportunities for all Divisions. It is not possible to write individual rules governing every possible circumstance, therefore, the "Spirit of the Rules" shall grant the authority and responsibility for interpretation of the written rules to a special committee named for that purpose, to fairly supervise and judge all competition. It shall be the responsibility of a special committee named for that purpose to interpret the rules in the interest of fair competition and the special committee's interpretation of the rules shall be binding on the individual and competition under their jurisdiction. In addition, from time to time the AASBD may, at its discretion, publish a rule interpretation that shall be binding upon all entrants. It must be understood by all entrants in the SBD that it is not possible to cover all possible issues of legal construction for racing. However, changes, alterations, modifications and/or replacement not authorized by the rules should NOT be assumed to be legal under "Spirit of the Rules". Any entrant unable to locate a rule pertaining to a specific area of construction is advised to contact the Local Race Director for consultation and interpretation. The rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These rules govern the conduct of all sanctioned AASBD races and events. By participating in these events all entrants are deemed to have consented to the rules and to the authority of person who enforce the rules. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM THE PUBLICATION OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS. ANY QUESTIONS DIRECTED TOWARD THE NATIONAL CONTROL BOARD PERTAINING TO ANY RULE MUST BE REQUESTED IN WRITING MAIL TO: AASBD, PO BOX 7225, AKRON, OH SOAPBOX@AASBD.ORG FAX: ANSWERS WILL ONLY BE GIVEN TO QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED IN WRITING. STOCK DIVISION ADJUSTMENTS The following adjustments have been made standard practices observed in the Stock Division. 1. Cut off excess bolt length 1/8 from nut and remove (file) sharp edges on steering pulleys, brake pulleys, assembly D attachment bolts, and foot brace. 2. Maintain 6" carriage bolt length for weight adjustments on the front and rear weight bolts that are supplied with the kit. The weight bolt, washers, and wing nuts supplied with kit MUST be installed per plan. The recommended amount of adjustment weight is ten pounds (3-two pound, 3-one pound, and 2-eight ounce). THESE ARE THE ONLY ADJUSTABLE WEIGHT AREAS PERMITTED. There must be adjustable weight if you use any weight in the car. 3. Weights under the driver s legs and seat must use hex nuts and washer. Cut bolt flush to nut and file smooth of sharp edges. This is not to be used as an adjustable weight area. 4. Weight used in the car must be painted and each piece must be marked with poundage. 4
5 5. Cut off excess brake cable on steering shaft. Recommendation: solder the area where the cable will be cut (at least 1/4" on each side of the intended cut). Cut cable at center of soldered area. You will be permitted to tape the ends of the cut cable to avoid fraying (only on the cable ends inside the car). 6. All race cars must display sponsor decals per rule S-5 7. Any lettering must be of Mactac or similar stick-on material or with markers. 8. Unused holes in the floorboard may be taped over on the bottom side using only clear adhesive tape. 9. The winning race cars at the All-American will be re-inspected following the final heat and the suspension system will be removed. Any unauthorized material or components found in or around the kingpin area will be grounds for disqualification. 10. It is permissible to remove part of shell's inner lip from the rear center of the opening extending forward to a point up to but not exceeding 5" measured from the rear center of the opening. A minimum of 3/4" of the lip must be retained at all points on the modified lip. (See figure A.1 below) The shell may be raised or raked ½ maximum from bottom of floorboard. Cockpit Opening (Top View) 5 in. Cockpit Opening (Cross Sectional Side View) Inner Lip (Full Depth) 5" FIG A.1 Rear 3/4 in. Minimum Front Rear 11. Foam on the rear of cockpit opening is optional, but if you use the foam, you must use it all. (No undercutting of foam is allowed.) 12. Any of the two kingpin bolts shown below and supplied by the All-American Soap Box Derby may be used in the Stock Division car. Kingpins identical to those issued by the AASBD can be purchased at your local hardware store. 13. A center punch mark may be made on the head of the kingpin along with the axle to aid in alignment procedures. Can t be drilled only center punched. Top View LEof Bolt 14.
