1 November 2012, Volume 14, No. 11 The Benefits of Calling the GM Technical Assistance Center When technicians call the GM Technical Assistance Center (TAC), they are only thinking about how to best service the vehicle in their service bay quickly and accurately. Those calls to TAC help technicians make the right repairs, yet they also benefit GM as well as other technicians at dealerships across the country. TAC relies on calls from technicians to help build their database on vehicle conditions and proper repairs for all GM vehicles (TAC does not have a model year limit on service support), but especially for new models, where technicians calls can speed up resolution time on the latest concerns and improve initial quality. To address particularly tough conditions or new product issues, TAC also engages GM engineering and GM product quality managers for answers. All of this information enables technicians to make the right repairs and enhance GM s efforts in continuous product quality improvement. Before Calling On the other end of the phone line when technicians call TAC are TAC agents who have extensive automotive continued on page 2 TECHLINEnews GDS 2 News The Global Diagnostic System (GDS) 2 recently received several enhancements with the latest diagnostic package update. 2 The Benefits of Calling the GM Technical Assistance Center continued from page 1 training on GM systems and components, ASE certification, and years of dealership experience as technicians themselves. For TAC agents, the challenge is to help technicians quickly diagnose a condition based on the information provided during the call. The agents rely on their training on how to proceed through a TAC case, which involves using existing information on similar conditions along with listening to what the technician has to say about the condition. Technicians who prepare for a call in advance will help TAC agents to reduce call time and provide quality recommendations. The Technical Assistance Information Form lists all of the background information needed to help quickly resolve each case. Before calling TAC, the following information should be gathered: Specifics about the vehicle, including make, model, VIN, and mileage A detailed explanation of the condition A verification of the customer s concern may require talking with the service consultant and/or the customer A list of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) A list of history DTCs that may have been compared to another vehicle A review of service bulletins and PIs that may apply A review of the Customer Concern Verification Sheet a form in the Service Information that lists basic information and questions for diagnosis Details Matter Like a good detective, TAC agents ask callers to provide as many details as possible about a condition. The little things may seem insignificant at first, but the small details may lead to a bulletin or other cases with similar conditions. Providing all the details can mean gathering as much information as possible in many different ways, such as sending photos, GDS 2 session logs, snapshots and other information to TAC agents. These details can help resolve other TAC cases too. Technicians are encouraged to call TAC once repairs have been made successfully so that the case can be closed and it can be documented that the repairs worked. The database can then be updated with new information that can be used for similar repairs, providing a qualified and verified repair for a specific condition. Once a repair has been made after calling TAC, technicians should submit the TAC case closing information. The online form is available through GlobalConnect. TAC agents also will follow-up with technicians to close open cases and document the repairs made. Behind the Scenes The structure of TAC is designed to quickly solve problems by developing and maintaining an extensive technical database with all GM models. There are 200 TAC agents organized in eight groups: Certified Elite Dealer, Engine, Electrical, Drivetrain, Chassis, Infotainment, Performance Contact Center, and Volt/Hybrid. TAC also has an Escalation Team that performs a more in-depth analysis to resolve vehicle concerns and escalates the especially difficult cases to GM engineering and product quality. These are cases where there may not be a good resolution on record. If a repair still cannot be recommended, TAC will deploy a Field Service Engineer to visit the dealership and help technicians resolve a difficult case. In addition, Action Centers are now established when new models are launched. The Action Centers provide specific information on new models, to help quickly address new concerns and resolve product quality issues. All of these aspects of TAC are designed to address the variety of vehicle repairs technicians experience every day. But the most important factor in assisting technicians is the information that technicians themselves provide, helping TAC gather critical technical data. It s a winning combination for faster vehicle repairs. Thanks to Dale Hall What Do You Think? Thanks to Chris Henley Install Lower Control Arm Deflectors during PDI In the bag of dealer-installed parts found in the trunk of the 2013 ATS, there are two pieces of black plastic trim that do not include installation instructions. These two items are deflectors to be installed on the bottom of the rear lower control arm assemblies during the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process. Each is marked for right-hand (RH) or left-hand (LH) installation. Lower control arm deflectors To install, identify the deflector as either right hand or left hand. The deflector also has a larger fin or lip on one side, which should face forward in relation to the car. Place the deflector on the lower control arm and tuck the forward, outboard corner above the parking brake cable. Install the four pushpin fasteners, which are included in another package in the trunk. Be A. Left-hand or right-hand identifier B. Fin faces forward when installed Installed deflector sure to push the fasteners through both the shield and the control arm to fasten the deflector securely. Thanks to Jeremy Richardson Brake Pedal Pulsation or Drumming Noise On some Volts built before November 22, 2012: A drumming or ringing noise may be heard after depressing the brake pedal. This condition is often most noticeable during low speed EV driving and/or stationary brake pedal applies while in Park. The noise may seem to be a hydraulic pressurerelated drumming/ringing sound that tends to transmit throughout the entire vehicle. The noise also can be heard after the vehicle is powered off. Pulsation felt through the brake pedal while sitting still while slightly depressing the brake pedal. If either of these conditions is found, program the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) with the latest calibrations in TIS2Web and then perform an Electronic Brake Control Module Learn with GDS 2. 4 New Charging Rate Procedure for 2013 Volt Charging the lithium-ion high voltage battery pack on the 2013 Volt continues to be a simple procedure. However, several changes were made to the 120-volt portable charge cord and the charging rates selection. The 120-volt charge cord for 2013 vehicles is not compatible with models. If replacing a charge cord, be sure to order a cord for the appropriate model year. The new 2013 model year electric cord can be identified by its black color. The previous electric cord was orange. The new electric cord also does not have a flashlight. Charging Procedure When charging the Volt: Press the Leaf button on the center stack and then touch the Charging tab at the stop of the screen to review the selected Charge Mode and Charge Press the Leaf button to display the Charging Mode screen. Complete time. Charge Complete time is based on charging level (the default charging level is Reduced 8 Amps for the 120-volt portable charge cord). To change the charging level, touch the Change Charge Level button at the bottom of the screen. Select the desired charging level (120-volt portable charge cord only). Remind owners to use the reduced charge level if they are not using a dedicated circuit or if the electrical circuit or outlet/socket capacity is unknown. Refer to the owner manual for additional information. TIP: Regardless of the selected charging level, it defaults to the reduced level each time the vehicle is started. Plug the charge cord directly into an electrical outlet/socket. Do NOT use an extension cord. Charge cord indicators should be green. The charging indicator on top of the instrument panel will illuminate green and the horn will chirp when the charge cord is properly connected. Charging Status The charging status indicator on the Volt is located on the instrument panel near the windshield. When charging the Volt, it will indicate the following: Solid green with single horn chirp Vehicle is plugged in; battery is charging Slow (long pulse) flashing green with double horn chirp Vehicle is plugged in; battery charging is delayed Slow (short pulse) flashing green Vehicle is plugged in; battery is fully charged Solid yellow Vehicle is plugged in; not charging No light Vehicle is not plugged in OR there is an issue with the charger or outlet Repetitive horn chirps and no light Electricity was interrupted before charging was completed Immediately after plugging in, the charging status indicator may be amber for up to five seconds before turning green. Charging Time The charge level default is the reduced 8 amp selection. The recommended 240-volt charging station will take approximately 4 hours to charge the Volt. The portable 120-volt charge cord will take approximately 16 hours at the 8 amp default setting, or about 10 hours at the 12 amp maximum setting. Charge times will vary with outside temperature. It s important to point out to owners that the 12 amp setting may stress an electrical system if not a dedicated circuit and that using a charge level that exceeds the electrical circuit or outlet/ socket capacity may cause damage. 5 Enhancing Volt Electric Range in Cold Weather Colder weather is almost here as the winter months approach. This will affect the electric range of the Volt. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated that a new Volt will average 35 miles and a new 2013 Volt will average 38 miles of electric range. Most customers will see an electric range between 25 and 50 miles depending on outside temperature, terrain, and driving technique. During colder months, the energy needed to keep the vehicle s cabin and the high-voltage battery warm will deplete battery energy available for electric driving, decreasing the vehicle s electric range. Here are a few tips that can be used to help maximize electric range as the thermometer dips. Volt owners who live in warmer climates can benefit from these tips too. Use less heat switch the climate mode setting from Comfort to Eco to help reduce the energy used to heat the cabin. If equipped, use the automatic heated seats to keep warm. It takes less energy to heat your body through the seat than heating the entire cabin. Use of the cabin heater and defrost can consume considerable energy. Pre-condition the vehicle While plugged in, use the remote start feature to heat the cabin and the battery prior to driving. The Volt can be remote started through the key fob, MyVolt.com, or the RemoteLink App available on compatible iphone or Android based smart phones. This will use available energy from the power grid to heat the Volt if it has been sitting in the cold for a while, and reserve the stored battery energy for driving on the road. Maximum benefit is provided when using the 240V charger to pre-condition cabin. Check the tire pressure As the outside temperature drops, the air pressure in the tires drops as well. Be sure to check the tire pressure and add more air if needed to maintain the tire pressures at the recommended level. Recommended tire pressure for the Volt is on the label inside the driver s door opening. Properly inflated tires will improve electric range and fuel economy. Engine Assisted Heating (2013 Volt only) If equipped, this feature enables owners to select the outside temperature level at which the gas-powered generator will run to assist heating while driving in Electric Mode. The Engine Assisted Heating options are: At Cold Outside Temperatures, below approximately 35 F (2 C). This selection maximizes the battery range and uses a very small amount of gasoline to help power the vehicle during cold temperatures. At Very Cold Outside Temperatures, below approximately 15 F ( 10 C). This selection uses less gasoline, but has a larger adverse impact on battery range. Engine Assisted Heating, Plugged- In (2013 Volt only) If equipped, this feature allows owners to turn on the gas-powered generator while the vehicle is plugged in to help heat the vehicle. Use of this option will improve electric range. Refer to the Owner Manual for more details. Three T s Remember the three T s to maximize electric range. Temperature Cold weather will adversely impact electric range, but efficient use of the climate system, pre-warming the vehicle while it is plugged in, and using the heated seats (if equipped) instead of the heater can help reduce the effect of cold outside temperatures on electric range. Terrain Going up and down hills is less efficient than driving on flat surfaces. Where possible, avoid hilly routes to maximize electric range Technique Aggressive acceleration and deceleration is not as efficient as gentle and smooth starts and stops. Use the efficiency gauge in the instrument cluster to help drive more efficiently. Thanks to Keith Newbury Incorrect Power Seat Movement and Inoperative Heated Seats Some 2012 Enclave, Escalade models, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Acadia, Sierra, and Yukon models may have a power driver s seat that only moves in short bursts each time the seat switch is operated and/or inoperative front and/or rear heated seats. These conditions may affect only certain vehicles based on their build date. Each manufacturing plant has a different breakpoint. Vehicles built before or after the breakpoint are not applicable to the recommended software update. Enclave, Traverse and Acadia built between: 5GAKVDED5CJ GAKVCED0CJ Full-size Trucks and Utilities built between: Arlington 11th VIN R: 1GN- SCJE01CR GNSC- CE03CR Flint 11th VIN F: 1GC1KYE83CF GC4K1C8XCF Fort Wayne 11th VIN Z: 1GCRK- TE74CZ GTR2WE75CZ Silao 11th VIN G: 3GNTKGE79CG GTP2WE74CG There will not be any DTCs set in the Memory Seat Module (MSM), Rear Heated/Vented Seat Module (RHVSM), or Front Seat Heating Control Module (HVSMF) if these conditions are present. When the heated seats are activated, three clicks may be heard from the module. If the module has a DTC(s) set, this information does not apply. Follow the appropriate Service Information diagnostics for the DTC. Do NOT replace the Memory Seat Module, Rear Heated/Vented Seat Module, or Front Seat Heating Control Module. Reprogram only the affected module with the updated calibrations available in TIS2Web. 6 Noise Behind Instrument Panel Cluster On some 2013 Malibus equipped with the 2.5L 4-cyinder engine (RPO LCV), a buzz or rattle noise may be heard from behind the instrument panel cluster. The noise may be more noticeable when the brakes are applied. Inspect the plastic vacuum tube that supplies vacuum from the pump to the vacuum switch and brake booster for contact with the bulkhead, stud or brake lines. The vacuum pipe has likely been routed over the top of the throttle body and sensor during assembly. Remove the intake resonator and snorkel. Carefully flex the vacuum pipe rearward and off the throttle body and Throttle Position Sensor. The following photos show the incorrect and correct routing. It may be necessary to wrap the brake booster vacuum switch with butyl tape if it is contacting a vacuum pipe. It may also be necessary to wrap the rubber section of the brake vacuum pipe with butyl tape if it is contacting a brake line or the body of the brake booster. Also check the position of the pipe clamps for contact with the brake booster or brake lines and reposition as needed. Thanks to Christopher Crumb A. Vacuum pipe contact with bulkhead and stud. B. Vacuum pressure switch connector. C. Intake snorkel. D. Brake master cylinde Incorrect throttle body vacuum pipe routing Correct throttle body vacuum pipe routing Blank Rear Camera Display The rear camera display may be inoperative when shifting into Reverse on some Escalade models, Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon models equipped with the rear camera option (RPO UVC). This condition may be caused by an open or shorted camera circuit (7641, 7642, 6799) between the camera and display (with either the navigation radio display or inside rearview mirror display). The body harness routing of the rear camera circuits, starts at the liftgate. X413 connects the liftgate harness to the body harness. The body harness runs along the rear of the roof to the driver s side D pillar and then down along the driver s side to the door sill. At the driver s seat, the harness routes across the vehicle (going under the driver s seat, center console/center seat and passenger s seat) to the passenger s sill. At the passenger s sill, the circuits either go rearward to X421/X322, if equipped with the display in the inside rearview mirror, or forward to X209, if equipped with a navigation radio. If normal diagnostic leads to the rear camera body circuits being shorted or open, inspect the following areas: For trucks equipped with the camera display in the inside rearview mirror, check for a loose or disconnected X421/X322 connector behind the right side C pillar trim and repair as necessary. For trucks equipped with either the camera display in the inside rearview mirror or the navigation radio, inspect for the camera circuits A. Connector X421/X322 being opening, pinched, or shorted as the harness crosses the truck from the driver s sill to the passenger sill (under the driver s seat, center console/center seat and passenger s seat). Repair as necessary. Thanks to Jim Will Body harness routing of the rear camera circuits: A. X413 B. X421/X322 C. X209 6 November 2012
