1 February 2011 Volume 13, No.2 uses this information to shift the transmission at the optimum time. Adaptive 6-Speed Automatic Transmission The new Cruze is available with the 6-speed 6T40 automatic transmission (RPO MH8) that contributes to the car s excellent fuel economy while also providing responsive performance. One of the unique features about the automatic transmission is the adapt mode, which optimizes shift quality. As the vehicle is driven, the transmission will adapt the shift patterns to best match the operating characteristics of the vehicle. TECHLINEnews It s important to communicate to new Cruze owners about how the automatic transmission operates. Owners may notice transmission shifts will change for the first few hundred miles. Transmission Control Module Recommended Techline Operating System: Windows 7 Professional Changing the six forward gear ratios is accomplished through the transmission control module (TCM) located inside the transmission. The TCM receives and monitors various electronic sensor inputs and The new recommended Techline operating system (OS) for dealership service department PCs is Windows 7 Professional, 32 bit, and the recommended web browser is Internet Explorer (IE) 8. The minimum required systems are Windows Vista Business, 32 bit, and Internet Explorer 7. These guidelines for PCs as well as other IT infrastructure requirements can be found in the recently updated GM Dealership Infrastructure Guidelines. TIP: As of January 1, 2011, GM Techline ended support of Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6. continued on page 2 The TCM commands shift solenoids and variable bleed pressure control solenoids to control shift timing and feel. It also controls the apply and release of the torque converter clutch to allow the engine to deliver the maximum fuel efficiency without sacrificing vehicle performance. Shift Quality The purpose of the adapt function is to automatically compensate the shift quality for the various vehicle shift control systems. The adapt function is a continuous process that will help to maintain optimal shift quality throughout the life of the vehicle Contents continued on page 2 Adaptive 6-Speed Automatic Transmission...1 Recommended Techline Operating System: Windows 7 Professional New Electronic Pre-Delivery Inspection Form..2 Timing the High Feature V6 Engine Volt Electric Vehicle Range Driving Tips Wind Noise or Water Leak at Door Glass or Mirror Patch Charge Port Door Operation in Cold Weather.5 Fuel Line/Bracket Rattle Front Bumper Alignment Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor DTCs Inoperative Shift Indicator Light Seat Belt Pretensioners Water Leak on Front Passenger Floor Service Know-How Car Issues Fix It Right the First Time Truck Issues Fix It Right the First Time Customer Care and Aftersales

2 Adaptive 6-Speed Automatic Transmission continued from page 1 New Electronic Pre-Delivery Inspection Form Shifts within the automatic transmission are accomplished by applying and disengaging clutches simultaneously, which provides a more direct feel, compared to freewheeling gear change mechanisms. The transmission uses a line pressure control system during upshifts to compensate for the normal wear of transmission components. As the apply components within the transmission wear or change over time, shift time (the time required to apply a clutch) increases or decreases. In order to compensate for these changes, the TCM adjusts the pressure commands to the various pressure control (PC) solenoids to maintain the originally calibrated shift timing. This automatic adjusting process, referred to as "adaptive learning," is used to ensure consistent shift feel as well as increase transmission durability. The TCM monitors the input speed sensor (ISS) and the output speed sensor (OSS) during commanded shifts to determine if a shift is occurring too fast (harsh) or too slow (soft) and adjusts the corresponding PC solenoid signal to maintain the set shift feel. TIP: When the vehicle is new, with very few miles, the "adaptive learning" process has begun but is not yet complete. As the vehicle is driven, the learning process takes place and the upshifts become more consistent and pleasing. In order to further the learning process, owners should drive the vehicle as they normally would. There is no need for special driving maneuvers to make the learning occur. Neutral Idle The neutral idle feature of the automatic transmission saves on fuel by automatically shifting the vehicle into a neutral state when the vehicle comes to a stop and the brake pedal is depressed. It shifts back to gear as the brake pedal is released. Neutral idle is activated when the brake pedal is depressed, and the vehicle speed, throttle position, and transmission temperature are within the calibration defined limits. The TCM will command Neutral Idle ON. The low and reverse clutch remains applied. The TCM reduces the pressure command to the 1234 PC Solenoid 5, which reduces the fluid pressure to the clutch, allowing the clutch to slip. This reduces the torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed, which, in turn, reduces the engine load and lowers fuel consumption. TIP: The driver may experience a different feeling during starts and stops when first driving the Cruze compared to other vehicles. The vehicle also may roll back very slightly when stopped on an incline before shifting into Drive. Thanks to Dave Peacy and Mike Johnston Be sure to use the latest form when performing a PDI. The Pre-Delivery Inspection Form has been revised for These changes include: In the Under Hood section, the 12V battery testing procedure has changed. 3 Timing the High Feature V6 Engine The following models offer the available high feature 3.6L V6 engine (RPO LY7, LLT), 2.8L V6 engine (RPO LP1) or 3.0L V6 engine (RPO LF1, LFW): CTS, SRX, STS, Acadia, Lacrosse, Allure (Canada only); G6, AURA; OUTLOOK; Pontiac Torrent; Enclave, Malibu, Equinox; VUE; Camaro; and 2011 Traverse. The high feature V6 engine family features a camshaft drive system that consists of a primary timing drive chain driven by the crankshaft sprocket. The primary timing drive chain drives two intermediate drive shaft sprockets. Each intermediate drive shaft sprocket drives separate secondary timing drive chains, which drive the respective cylinder head's intake and exhaust camshaft position actuators. The following supplemental information may be helpful when timing the high feature V6. Refer to #PIP4384E for additional details and to the appropriate Service Information for complete timing procedure information. For additional information, view video D, January 2008 Emerging Issues, from the Common Training Website (U.S.). In Canada, view Tech Assist video W, Timing the High Feature 3.6L V6 Engine, on the LMS website and a related video on the GM GlobalConnect Service Library under Technician Resources >TAC Talk Video Help. Keep these items in mind before beginning the timing procedure: In a front-wheel-drive vehicle, it may be easier to remove the engine before beginning. When removing the front cover, be sure to remove the belt tensioner and all the bolts. Damage may occur to the block if this procedure is not followed. When removing the front cover, do not pry against or strike the cam actuators. This will cause damage to the reluctor or actuator. Intake cam actuators have marks on them for the Right Bank (R) and the Left Bank (L). They must be positioned respectively. Be sure to note the orientation of the injector wiring harness. The harness with connector should come out on the front side of the engine. If installed backwards it will cause misfires and/or fuel trim DTCs. 4 screw Delphi and 5 screw Aisin cam actuators are interchangeable, but will require the correct shim behind them when applicable. 4 screw Delphi actuators use a in. shim and the 5 screw Aisin actuators use a in. shim. Stage One Timing To set the timing on a high feature V6 engine, start with the engine in stage one position with tool EN , Camshaft Locking Tool, or EN , Camshaft Retaining Tool, on the left bank, or bank 2. The circular timing marks on the camshafts should be aligned as shown. In stage one position, the circular timing marks on the camshafts should be aligned. Stage one primary chain alignment for the crankshaft and the left intermediate gear is shown below. The intermediate gear has a triangular shaped timing mark that aligns with the painted link and the crankshaft has a dot-to-dot alignment. The intermediate gear has a triangular shaped timing mark that aligns with the painted link and the crankshaft has a dot-to-dot alignment. The right intermediate gear has a triangular mark that aligns with the painted link. Remove EN or from the left bank. Stage Two Timing The engine will need to be rotated 115 degrees clockwise for stage two timing. The crankshaft marks should align dot to dot. Tool EN or EN should fit easily on the rear of the cams on the left bank of the engine. In stage two position, the crankshaft marks should align dot to dot. EN should be installed on the right bank, or bank 1. The triangular marks should be aligned. The left camshafts will be aligned when in stage two timing position. The painted link on the right intermediate shaft should be aligned with the hole in the rear gear. The left camshafts will be aligned as shown when in stage two timing position. If there are any concerns in identifying the correct location for the camshafts, check the number stamped in the rear of the camshaft RI is right intake, RE is right exhaust, LI is left intake and LE is left exhaust. 4 Volt Electric Vehicle Range Driving Tips The electric vehicle (EV) range displayed on the instrument cluster of the Volt is an estimate based on the recent driving conditions and driving history of the vehicle. It is normal for the displayed value to change while the vehicle is driven. The displayed EV range can vary from season to season, week to week, day to day and even drive to drive. The electric range of the Volt may be less than customer expectations or what is being displayed on the in-vehicle display for EV range. The electric range of the Volt may be higher or lower than expected due to the driver s technique, the outdoor temperature, and/or the terrain. In other words, driving and braking aggressively, driving in extreme outdoor temperatures, and/or driving in areas with large elevation changes will impact the electric range capability. FACTORS THAT AFFECT EV RANGE Driver s Technique Jack-rabbit starts and driving aggressively can drain the battery faster High-speed driving (over 75 mph/120 km/h) will deplete the battery capacity and range quickly Increased weight from additional cargo or passengers can also decrease the range Temperature All electric vehicles are less efficient in cold and hot conditions. This is a function of battery storage capability and the greater use of heating and air conditioning in these conditions. In cooler temperatures, the electric cabin heater, electric air conditioning, and battery heater may be running to defrost the windows and heat the cabin. These items can have a substantial affect on range. The actual range during periods of cold temperatures will be at the low side of range estimates. This may become more evident when a customer is driving for maximum fuel efficiency or when driving on a common route and the only variable is outside temperature. It s no different than fuel mileage decreasing in a gas engine due to cold temperatures, efficiency losses, cold starts, cabin heating and the use of the defrosters. The average cost to fully charge the high voltage battery is approximately $1.50 (depending on utility rates) and a customer who is driving in cold temperatures may experience approximately cents of electrical energy use to condition the cabin and heat the battery. TIP: In cold conditions below 25 F (-4 C), the engine may run periodically even when the battery is charged to provide supplemental cabin heat as well as to heat the high voltage battery. The ENGINE RUNNING DUE TO TEMPERATURE message will be displayed in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Also, in hot temperatures, the electrically-driven air conditioning compressor will operate more often, using more energy. TIP: Tire pressure, which can change along with ambient temperatures, can have an impact on EV range. In order to maximize EV range, ensure that the tires are properly inflated. Tire pressure values can be viewed through the DIC. Terrain Driving in hilly terrain will definitely impact EV range Driving uphill requires more energy and can reduce range DRIVING TIPS FOR BETTER ENERGY EFFICIENCY Efficiency Gauge Use the Efficiency Gauge (green/yellow spinning ball indicator gauge) on the Enhanced Configuration of the instrument cluster to monitor efficient driving. Driving efficiently will keep the ball green and in the center of the gauge. Inefficient acceleration is indicated when the ball turns yellow and travels above the center of the gauge. Aggressive braking is indicated when the ball turns yellow and travels below the center of the gauge. Acceleration/Braking/Coasting Avoid unnecessary rapid accelerations and decelerations. Electric range is maximized at 50 mph (80 km/h) and below. Higher speeds use more energy and can significantly reduce electric range. Use cruise control when appropriate. Plan ahead for decelerations and coast whenever possible. For example, do not rush to traffic signals. Do not shift to N (Neutral) to coast. The vehicle recovers energy while coasting and braking in D (Drive) or L (Low). TIP: A significantly different driving style (higher speed and acceleration rate, harder braking, etc) compared to the previous drive event (the last X miles of history recorded in the vehicle s computer) will cause the actual driving range to be significantly less than the initially predicted electric range. Drive Mode and PRNDL Selection Use Normal Mode when possible. Sport Mode provides more responsive acceleration than Normal Mode but can reduce efficiency. Use Mountain Mode prior to climbing long, steep grades in mountainous areas. Be sure to engage Mountain Mode before entering mountainous terrain. Mountain Mode reduces electric range and power but may be needed to maintain speeds above 60 mph (96 km/h) when climbing long grades of 5% or higher. Use L (Low) in heavy stop-and-go traffic or when traveling downhill. L (Low) requires less brake pedal application and provides a controlled, efficient way to slow the vehicle. Climate Settings Using the heating and air conditioning systems decreases the energy available for electric driving. Optimal energy efficiency is achieved with the heating, air conditioning, and fan turned off. Less energy is used at low climate control fan speeds. When using the fan, FAN ONLY is the most energy efficient climate setting. ECO is for moderate air conditioning and heating operation and is the next most energy efficient setting. COMFORT is the least energy efficient setting. Use the auto heated seat feature instead of the climate settings. Heating the seat uses less energy than heating the vehicle interior. Use remote start to heat or cool the interior when the vehicle is plugged in to utilize electricity from the electrical outlet, maximizing the electric range. In hot weather, avoid parking in direct sunlight or use sunshades inside the vehicle. Turn off the front and rear window defogger/defroster when they are no longer needed. Avoid driving with the windows open at highway speeds. Thanks to Paul Radzwilowicz, Keith Newbury and Tom Sklenar 4 February 2011

5 Wind Noise or Water Leak at Door Glass or Mirror Patch Wind noise on some 2011 CTS Coupe and CTS-V Coupe models may be heard at the driver s or passenger s door area, or at the outside rearview mirror seal (mirror patch) area. Some vehicles also may have a water leak in these areas. If a vehicle exhibits any of these conditions, there are two inspection/repair procedures to follow. Refer to #PI0337 for complete details. Door Glass Fit The wind noise or water leak at the door area may be due to the door glass not seating properly in the window seal. Checking the door glass can be done by applying masking tape at the front and rear edges of the door glass and measuring how far the glass seats in the window seal. If the measurement is greater than or equal to 3 mm (0.118 in.), the door glass is seating properly (refer to the information on the mirror patch area). If the measurement is less than 3 mm (0.118 in.), push the glass to the full upward position, and then leave the door closed for 24 hours in a warm location. After the waiting period, open and close the door several times and measure the distance again. If the measurement is less than or equal to 3 mm (0.118 in.), increase the window tip-in toward the body seal. Adjust the regulator rail outboard to increase the window tip-in. Mirror Patch Check that the glass is fully seating in the door seal. The wind noise at the outside rearview (OSRV) mirror patch area may be the result of a wind rush noise in certain driving conditions. Inspect the visible edges of the front vertical run channel (OSRV mirror seal) with the window fully raised and the door closed. The entire length of the interior and exterior sealing surfaces of the seal should be in contact with the glass. TIP: When inspecting the front run channel, ensure that the window is fully raised and not in the index position. If the seal is not making complete contact, lower the glass and work the edges of the seal closer together. In extreme cases, the OSRV mirror seal may need to be replaced. Also, check for the presence of front and rear foam blocks inside the mirror patch. If the foam blocks are missing, install adhesive back shim stock foam tape as necessary. Thanks to Jean Hart Inspect the front vertical run channel of the OSRV mirror seal. Front (A) and rear (B) foam blocks should be present inside the mirror patch. Charge Port Door Operation in Cold Weather Owners of the 2011 Volt may experience a frozen charge port door that will not open in cold weather. In addition, the Check Engine light may be illuminated and DTC P0CD2 (Charge Port Door Unlock Control Performance) may be set. In colder weather conditions, the charge port door may freeze shut due to snow and/or ice accumulating on the charge port door or ice forming between the door and the seals. Any snow and/or ice should be removed from the door prior to requesting the charge port door to be opened using either the charge port door release button on the driver s door or the Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (key fob). If the charge port door does not open in these conditions on the first release command, lightly push on the outer charge port door surface to gently break free any snow and/or ice, and then try the release button again. TIP: In colder weather conditions, the charge door will open more slowly than normal. This is due to the viscous damper that's inside the charge port housing. DTC P0CD2 may set if the charge port door does not open during two consecutive key cycles. Erase the DTC, and then try the charge port door several times to make sure the door opens correctly. To help reduce the potential for moisture freezing between the door and seals, apply Krytox weatherstrip lube to the charge port weatherstrip seal. Refer to #PIC5415 for more information. 6 Fuel Line/ Bracket Rattle On some Escalade models, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra, Sierra Denali, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, and Yukon Denali XL models, a rattling noise during light acceleration around 1,200-1,700 rpm may be noticed. The noise may also sound like a creak or tap sound coming from behind the instrument panel. This noise condition may be caused by the fuel line or fuel line bracket above the transmission contacting the floor pan. Inspect the fuel line/bracket and reposition away from the floor pan. Thanks to Jim Will Front Bumper Alignment A clunk or pop noise coming from the front end on some Express and Savana vans most noticeable while turning left or right at slow speeds while driving up or down an incline may be caused by the front bumper cover contacting the fender. When inspecting for contact, make sure the vehicle is on a level surface, or place the vehicle on a hoist. If using a hoist, keep in mind that a frame-supporting hoist will allow the body/frame to flux and the contact area may be missed. Also, a visual inspection of the left-toright front bumper alignment may reveal the contact. To correct this concern, perform a left/right front bumper alignment. Thanks to Jim Will A. Grill B. Upper bumper cover C. Left front fender Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor DTCs On some Escalade, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra and Yukon models, an illuminated Service Engine Soon light and Reduced Engine Power message may be the result of any of the following APP Sensor DTCs being set: P2120, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128, and/or P2138. In most cases, this condition is very intermittent, so it may be difficult to get the DTC(s) to reset so stepby-step diagnosis can be performed. If SI diagnosis does not isolate the cause of the DTC(s), inspect the related Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor circuits for potential shorts-to-ground or high voltage drop while manipulating the harness between the APP sensor and ECM. Also inspect the related APP sensor circuits for poor terminal tension at the APP sensor and ECM connectors using the correct terminal test probes. If there are no problems found, inspect C109/X109 and C205/X205 for the following concerns: Connector halves that are not seated properly Corrosion and/or water intrusion APP circuit terminals that are not seated properly APP circuit terminals that have poor terminal tension using the correct terminal test probes. APP circuit terminals that are not crimped properly C109/X109 is located on the left side of the engine compartment below the underhood fuse block and C205/X205 is located under the upper instrument trim panel. If a terminal/wiring concern is found, repair it by following the related SI repair procedure. If these steps do not isolate the cause of this condition, re-crimp all of the APP circuit terminals at the APP sensor and ECM connectors using the proper terminal crimp tools. Thanks to James Parkhurst Inoperative Shift Indicator Light The upshift indicator light on the instrument cluster may be inoperative on some ION; Cobalt; HHR; G5; and Pontiac Pursuit (Canada only) models. The shift indicator will be able to be commanded On using a scan tool. The shift indicator is designed to function ONLY on vehicles equipped with the 2.2L 4-cylinder engine (RPO L61) and a manual transmission. If the vehicle is equipped with engine RPO L61 and the shift indicator is inoperative, verify that the scan tool is up-to-date, and then check the BCM option configuration. If the automatic transmission option has an asterisk (*) next to it, remove it. Next, verify the rest of the options before saving and exiting. TIP: It is important to verify all options before saving and exiting the BCM option configuration; otherwise, some of the options may default to On or Off and result in setting DTCs, warning lights or the undesired functionality of other components. This should be done even when the options are not changed. Do not replace the BCM, ECM, or IPC for the inoperative shift indicator condition. Thanks to Ernest Haller 6 February 2011
