1 November 2010 Volume 12, No.11 Wheel Installation and Wheel Nut Torque Every threaded fastener on a vehicle is designed to clamp parts together with a tension that is greater than the external forces tending to separate them. If the tension is too low, varying loads acting on a bolt or nut can cause it to loosen; tension that is too high can lead to bolt or nut failure. The most practical way of ensuring the correct tension is by specifying and controlling the tightening torque. During wheel installation, this requires the use of the proper size socket and a calibrated torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in the proper sequence and to the specified fastener torque. Improper wheel nut tightening can lead to brake pulsation and rotor damage as well as trapping the wheel on the wheel stud threads or clamping the wheel slightly off center, resulting in wheel vibration. TIP: Although wheel installation is a common procedure, make it a habit to double check your work and use care when installing wheels. Always refer to the SI Fastener Tightening Specifications for the correct wheel nut torque specifications for the vehicle being serviced. continued on page 2 Techline News Legacy Pass-Thru Programming to be Removed from SPS The Legacy Pass-Thru Programming option will be removed as a selectable programming option within the TIS 2 Web Service Programming System (SPS) application in November Legacy Pass-Thru has been long superseded by the J2534 Tech 2 scan tool. The J2534 Tech 2 option is the only programming option that meets the SAE J2534 programming specification, making it the best option when programming with the Tech 2. The Tech 2 Legacy Pass-Thru programming option will be removed from SPS this month. continued on page 3 Contents Wheel Installation and Wheel Nut Torque Legacy Pass-Thru Programming USB Serial Adapter for Techline Laptops Improving Wiring Repair Order Information....3 Outside Air Temperature Display Operation Brake Pulsation or Vibration BCM Programming Fails dexos Engine Oil Availability Turn Off Transport Mode Generator Not Charging Properly Aftermarket Braided Stainless Steel Brake Lines.6 Fluid Leak at Steering Gear Input Shaft Automatic Climate Control Function Turns Off...6 No Start Condition with No Communication Over High Speed LAN No Communication with ABS System After EBCM Replacement Service StabiliTrak Message with DTC U Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fill in Cold Weather Service Know-How Car Issues Fix It Right the First Time Truck Issues Fix It Right the First Time Customer Care and Aftersales

2 Wheel Installation and Wheel Nut Torque continued from page 1 Use a Torque Wrench The latest wheel installation procedures in the updated Service Information for the 2011 model year call for the use of a torque wrench. GM no longer endorses the use of torque sticks for wheel nut tightening. GM recommends hand starting the wheel nuts, and then using the proper size socket and a torque wrench, evenly tightening the wheel nuts in the proper sequence to the proper torque specification. For an accurate torque wrench reading, the final turn of the nut must be tightened with the torque wrench. When removing a wheel, loosen and remove the wheel nuts using a standard wrench. Torque Wrench Calibration Torque wrenches should be calibrated to ensure their accuracy. How often it should be calibrated depends on its use. According to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard, a torque wrench used in automotive repairs should be accurate within +/ 4% clockwise or +/ 6% counterclockwise, from 20% of its scale to full scale. For the commonly used clicker or micrometer torque wrench, the actual click is considered a cycle of the wrench. Most manufacturers recommend calibration after approximately 5,000 cycles, or once a year. Torque wrench calibration can be tested in the dealership. Torque wrench testers are available from manufacturers such as Snap-on as well as from Kent-Moore SPX. Be sure the tester is four times as accurate as the wrench being tested. This means a 1% tester is needed for a typical 4% wrench. The tester will indicate the accuracy of the wrench. If it is out of range, calibration is required. Calibration can be affected by the use and care of the torque wrench. Torque wrenches are precision instruments and should be stored in a safe place, such as in their original case in a location that is not subject to extreme temperatures or high humidity. Clicker wrenches should always be turned down to the lowest setting, but no further, to relax the spring and reduce spring wear. When using the torque wrench, do not drop it or overload it with a handle or pipe extension. Using this type of extension can exceed the rated torque of the wrench, causing possible wrench failure. Thanks to Brad Thacher Wheel Changing Procedures In addition to proper wheel nut torque, keep these following tips in mind when installing wheels. Lubricants Do not use penetrating oils, grease or other lubricants on wheel studs to aid in removal or installation. Always use a suitable cleaner/solvent to remove these lubricants prior to installing the wheel and tire assemblies. Lubricants left on the wheel studs may cause improper readings of wheel nut torque. Always install wheels to clean, dry wheel studs ONLY. TIP: Beginning with 2011 model year vehicles, GM recommends putting a light coating of grease on the inner surface of the wheel pilot hole to prevent wheel seizure to the axle or bearing hub. Refer to Bulletin # A for more information. Remove any corrosion from the wheel mounting surface. Corrosion Remove any excessive corrosion, dirt, rust or debris built up on mating surfaces of the wheel to the hub. These surfaces can mimic a properly tightened wheel in the service stall. Once the vehicle is driven, the debris may loosen, resulting in clearance at the mating surface of the wheel and an under-torqued condition. Remove the debris with a die grinder equipped with a fine s anding pad, wire brush or cleaning disc. Just remove enough material to ensure a clean, smooth mating surface. Damage Always inspect the wheel studs and wheel nuts for signs of damage from cross-threading or abuse. Never force wheel nuts down the stud. Wheel nuts that are damaged may not retain properly, yet give the impression of fully tightening. Always start wheel nuts by hand and be certain that all wheel nut threads have been engaged BEFORE tightening the nut. USB Serial Adapter for Techline Laptops Many new laptop computers are not equipped with a serial port. If the laptop is being used in the service department, a serial adapter is needed to connect and update the Tech 2. A USB serial adapter for updating the Tech 2 must work with the recommended Techline operating system of Windows 7 Professional, 32 bit. Techline recommends the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. This high speed USB serial adapter is available through under Techline IT Solutions > Desktop/Laptop Accessories. The USB serial adapter will enable the connection between serial devices, such as the Tech 2, to the USB port on a laptop computer. Thanks to Lisa Scott A USB serial adapter is available through the GM DESolutions website. 2 November 2010

3 Improving Wiring Repair Order Information GM strives for continuous improvement in all vehicle warranty categories. The primary tool for wiring warranty improvement is the repair order verbatim. Copies of repair orders are obtained by the wiring engineers, and then loaded into databases so that trends can be established and improvement can be made to the product, manufacturing and assembly processes. The repair order (R.O.) is the best source of information for problem definition on vehicles repaired under warranty at the dealership. As such, wiring improvements depend heavily on the accuracy and detail in the R.O. verbatim. Here are some pointers on what is most helpful to include in a repair order when a wiring issue is found. What, How and Where What, how and where are the most important questions an engineer needs to have answered to determine a fix for a specific problem. On the R.O., full sentences aren t necessary, but the following details are critical: Circuit numbers Cavity identification Connector identification Wire color Service document ID number Grid location Put yourself in the shoes of someone trying to prevent the problem you just spent two hours diagnosing. Some examples of both good and not so good descriptions: GOOD Circ 439 was chafed on the parking brake bracket Terminal in cav A X205 was open, replaced it Terminal in cav A of X205 was pushed out, replaced it NOT SO GOOD Wire was damaged Repaired terminal at IP inline No continuity, repaired terminal at IP inline Correct Labor Operations Use of the correct labor operation also is critical. The labor operation is the first means of sorting the repair order information. When a bulletin is issued, it may have a special labor op eration please use it. When a module is rebooted by a connector disconnect/reconnect, don t use a connector repair labor operation. Reboot with a fuse pull; don t charge the fuse labor operation. They may all pay the same, but it causes havoc when sorting for wiring problems. The correct labor operations to charge for a "Module Reset" are: N9999 Electrical Controls Labor Only (Comment required describing corrective action) Use the grids under Harness Routing Views in the Service Information to identify the wiring repair location on the vehicle. J9999 Powertrain Controls Labor Only (Comment required describing corrective action) These labor operations should be used in instances where a repair procedure is performed to a module that does not require that part to be replaced or any other physical repair. For example, when disconnecting the power to a module resets it and corrects the condition or when the set-up of a module that was previously replaced was not completed. TIP: The N9999 or J9999 labor operations may not be used in conjunction with another labor operation for the same customer concern. Terminal Issues Terminal issues are becoming the largest single problem category for wiring. It s important to distinguish between open contacts, terminals that were pushed out, and terminals that seem to have never been seated. The amount of damage to the terminal and the type of repair are the best way to distinguish between the three categories. See Bulletin # for complete details on submitting wiring repair warranty claims. It provides examples and instructions on entering claim information. Technicians are the eyes and ears of the GM wiring engineers. By providing the right information on the R.O., you can help improve the quality of GM wiring systems. A complete R.O. also may prevent getting pulled away from a job to answer a call to clarify wiring information. Thanks to Ron Cannatti Legacy Pass-Thru Programming continued from page 1 The preferred programming method for all GM vehicles is to use the J2534 MDI (Multiple Diagnostic Interface). Programming with the MDI can be as much as five times faster than with the Tech 2. In addition to J2534 MDI and J2534 Tech 2, the SPS application will continue to offer the Tech 2 Remote option in limited programming situations. Thanks to Mike Waszczenko November

4 Outside Air Temperature Display Operation The outside air temperature is displayed on the Driver Information Center, radio or rear view mirror in a number of GM vehicles. There may be some confusion about the operation of the display and how quickly it updates ambient temperature. Depending on several factors, the temperature may not be updated immediately and owners may feel that the display is inaccurate at times. As an example, here s a look at the operation of the outside air temperature display on several GM small cars from recent model years ( Malibu/Maxx; Cobalt and G6; Pursuit [Canada]; Solstice; HHR; AURA, SKY and G5; 2008 Malibu Classic; Malibu). The ambient air temperature sensor is a variable resistor interfaced to the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM provides the logic for reading the ambient air temperature sensor, filtering the data and transmitting the information via the serial data circuit to the outside temperature display. The outside air temperature algorithm uses three pieces of information: outside air temperature data, vehicle speed, and the time the engine was turned off. When the engine is first started, the algorithm looks at how long the engine was off and if the outside temperature is lower than the last reading taken during the previous ignition cycle. From this information, it s determined if a new outside temperature reading should be taken. If the engine was off long enough or the current outside air temperature is cooler than the stored value, a new outside temperature reading is taken and displayed. If the engine was not off long enough or the current outside air temperature is higher than the stored value from the previous ignition cycle, the last stored value of outside air temperature taken will be displayed. The outside air temperature will continue to be updated every second as long as the outside air temperature is the same or cooler than the previous reading. Once the new outside air temperature reading exceeds the previous temp - erature and the vehicle is traveling less than 18 mph, the displayed outside air temperature will remain at its last value. Once the vehicle speed exceeds 18 mph, the displayed outside air temperature will be updated. If the speed drops below 18 mph, the outside air temperature will freeze at its last value. When using a scan tool during diagnosis, it is possible that the temperature reading on the Tech 2 will differ from the temperature displayed on the DIC/radio without there being a problem with the vehicle. The DIC/Radio only displays the reading being sent from the BCM. TIP: Do not replace the ambient air temperature sensor or the BCM for an inaccurate outside air temperature display condition. Thanks to Ernest Haller Brake Pulsation or Vibration A brake pulsation or drag, or a vibration felt in the steering wheel, may be noticed on some 2011 Silverado and Sierra models. This condition can be intermittent and may occur even when the brakes are not applied, usually during longer drives. The brake pedal pivot joint may cause the brake pedal to keep a small amount of pressure in the brake system. Use the following procedure to isolate the brake pedal from the booster to identify the source of the brake drag. 1. Lift the truck on a hoist with the wheels off the ground 2. With the engine running, apply the brakes 3. Release the brake and check for brake drag by spinning the wheels (the condition is usually detected on the front wheels) 4. If brake drag is detected, pull up on the brake pedal 5. Check for drag again. If pulling up on the brake pedal resolves the condition, continue to perform the next steps. If it does not, follow the Service Information (SI) diagnostics 6. Remove the brake pedal rod from the pedal 7. Remove the brake switch from the rod 8. With the engine running, apply pressure to the flat area of the input rod against the brake pedal pin leading edge 9. Evaluate for brake drag at the wheels 10. If brake drag is identified, pull up on the pedal and re-evaluate 11. If the brake drag is eliminated, inspect for any components or harnesses contacting the brake pedal. If nothing is identified, replace the brake pedal with the WPC brake pedal kit 12. If the brake drag is not eliminated, follow SI diagnostics Refer to PIT5037 for part number information and the WPC order form. Thanks to Troy Zell BCM Programming Fails On some Cobalt and G5 models and HHR models, BCM part number or replacement BCM part number may fail BCM programming and/or RPO configuration. If BCM programming fails, update the scan tool (Tech 2) to software version (or higher if available). After updating, try communicating with the BCM and perform the following: If the Tech 2 is able to read the module ID information, perform the BCM setup with Tech 2 software version or higher. If the Tech 2 is not able to read the module ID information, the BCM will need to be replaced and the BCM setup performed with Tech 2 software version or higher. If the Tech 2 continues to exhibit a communication and/or module setup concern, continue with published diagnostics in the Service Information. Thanks to Ernest Haller 4 November 2010

Transport mode is intended for use on vehicles being shipped outside of the U.S. and Canada. It is designed to extend the battery charge during shipment or extended storage. When activated, it shuts down various modules and accessories, depending on vehicle equipment. The vehicle can be started and driven while transport mode is active, but it will have reduced functionality. To disable transport mode, follow these procedures: Camaro 1. Activate the Hazard Lamps 2. Turn the ignition key to the crank position and hold it for 15 seconds. The Transport Mode Off message will be displayed and the Battery light will turn off. LaCrosse 1. Press and hold the Start/Stop button or turn the ignition key to the crank position 2. Apply the brake for 15 seconds or until the Transport Mode Off message is displayed. SRX 1. Press and hold the Start/Stop button 2. Apply the brake for 15 seconds or until the Transport Mode Off message is displayed. TIP: If transport mode is active, it causes the RKE system to only work when the ignition is on or the BCM is awake (approximately 20 minutes after turning the ignition off). Equinox 1. Turn the ignition key to the crank position and hold it for 15 seconds. TIP: After turning the transport mode off, make sure the ignition lock cylinder is not binding on the bezel around it and causing the key to stick in the crank position. Thanks to Gordon Baillod Generator Not Charging Properly On the 2010 Express and Savana, the generator may not charge or operate correctly if the Engine Control Module (ECM) has been programmed improperly. When programming the ECM, there is a selection for the generator pin configuration in the Service Programming System (SPS). If the wrong selection is made, the generator will not operate properly. Program the ECM for the correct generator pin configuration. When programming the ECM, select the correct generator pin configuration. The generator will have a 2 pin or 4 pin connector cavity. Vans with Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) will have a generator connector with a 2 pin cavity. Vans without RVC will have a generator connector with a 4 pin cavity. TIP: If a generator is replaced and the pin configuration is different from the one removed, the ECM also will need to be reprogrammed for the new pin configuration. Thanks to Jim Will November

6 Aftermarket Braided Stainless Steel Brake Lines Aftermarket braided stainless steel brake lines installed (from the front calipers to the frame clips) on the Corvette may cause interference with front wheel speed sensors. As a result of the interference, the amber Traction Control/ Active Handling warning lamp and the ABS warning lamp may illuminate in the instrument cluster or Driver Information Center messages Service ABS, Service Active Handling and/or Service Traction Control may appear while driving. DTCs C1225/C0035 and/or C1226/C0040 (left and right front erratic wheel speed sensors) also may be set. This condition typically occurs at lower speeds (approximately 35 mph and under) and will usually occur more often over bumps while driving straight or during cornering. Before beginning any diagnosis for this condition, the aftermarket braided stainless steel brake lines will have to be removed. This is a customer pay expense and should not be charged to warranty. Diagnosis can continue after the original equipment rubber hoses are installed and after it is determined that the DTCs and other concerns still exist. Thanks to Jeremy Richardson The front wheel speed sensor is part of the front wheel bearing and hub assembly. Fluid Leak at Steering Gear Input Shaft When repairing a power steering fluid leak at the steering gear input shaft on Kodiak, TopKick, and all C-Series models, the previous GM Customer Care and Aftersales (formally GM SPO) seal kits did not include the input shaft pressure seal. GM Customer Care and Aftersales has recently released new seal kits that contain the input shaft pressure seal. Do not replace the steering gear when repairing this power steering fluid leak. Order the steering gear seal kit from GM Customer Care and Aftersales and follow the instructions included in the kit to replace the seal. Thanks to Jim Will Automatic Climate Control Function Turns Off No Start Condition with No Communication over High Speed LAN On Cobalt; HHR; Malibu; 2008 Malibu Classic; G5; Pursuit (Canada); G6; Aura, SKY; and Solstice models equipped with OnStar (RPO UE1), an intermittent no start condition may be exhibited along with an illuminated Service Engine Soon light or intermittently inoperative instrument panel gauges while driving. DTCs U0121, U0101, U1040, U2100, U2106, U2107, U2108, P0700, P2544, U0073 may be set. Verify that the Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM) connector C3 (Black) has been fully seated and there are no loose or backed out terminals present for circuits 2500 or Also check that the harness is not too tight, which could partially unseat the connector from the module when mated. Thanks to Martin Cowger Adjusting any settings other than the temperature while in the automatic climate control mode will turn off the AUTO indicator light. Owners of the 2011 Cruze with automatic climate controls may comment that when in the automatic climate control mode, the AUTO indicator light may turn off unexpectedly. This condition may be noticed when there is an occupant in the front passenger seat. It is possible for a front passenger seat occupant's leg/knee to come in contact with the fan speed control knob wheel, which results in the automatic climate control mode and the AUTO indicator light turning off. Verify with the owner if the condition happens only when the front passenger seat is occupied. Thanks to Chris Hightower 6 November 2010

Further diagnosis may show that the Steering Angle Sensor has set DTC U0710. The Steering Angle Sensor is setting the U0710 code incorrectly. There is not a valid DTC U0710. It should be setting DTC C0710, Steering Position Signal, instead. Follow the appropriate Service Information diagnostics for DTC C0710. Thanks to Jeremy Richardson Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fill in Cold Weather When filling the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) on the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine available on the 2011 Silverado and Sierra HD trucks and 2010 interim and 2011 Express and Savana vans, it s important to not overfill the DEF tank. TIP: With colder weather coming, keep in mind that DEF behaves like water and will freeze at 12 F ( 11 C) and will expand. Adding more than the 5.3 gallon (20 liter) usable capacity may not allow for DEF expansion if it freezes. DEF will not be damaged by freezing, and will remain fully usable when thawed. The fluid tank includes a DEF pump heater, reservoir heater and line heater. Vehicles are shipped with 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of DEF from the assembly plant. To prevent damage from freezing, at customer delivery or during PDI, do not add more than the approximate 3.3 gallons (12.5 liters) of remaining capacity. The 5.3 gallon (20 liter) capacity of the DEF tank will last approximately 5,000 miles (8,000 km) depending on drive cycles and vehicle use. The easiest way for customers to ensure that the tank is not overfilled is to wait until the EXHAUST FLUID RANGE: 1000 MILES message is displayed on the Driver Information Center. At this approximate mileage, add no more than 3.5 gallons (13 liters) of DEF. When fluid reaches the top of the fill pipe, stop filling. Thanks to B.J.
