4 Wolf Steel Product Information Bulletin PIB: 72 March, 2012 Subject: IR Direct Vent Gas Insert Improvements The recent launch of our hot, new IR Series of inserts has been met with a tremendous response from our customers. We have also been provided with some great feedback regarding these inserts, which has enabled us to introduce the following improvements in our next production runs. A new battery pack (W ) will replace the 2 x 2 battery pack (W ) previously provided. This will make accessing the batteries much easier and also eliminate the potential of the contacts shorting out on parts of the insert body. As previously advised, the sensor and electrode wires on the pilot assembly (W ) are being replaced with wires protected by a higher temperature rated coating. We are also redesigning the PRP panels for each of these inserts to remove the potential of flue gases re-circulating behind them. Changes will include returns on the panel edges to improve rigidity, barriers behind the PRP cavity as well as securing mechanisms to fix the panels tightly to the firebox walls. An IR Insert service kit (IRSK) has also been created for those existing IR Inserts in the field experiencing intermittent pilot issues. The IRSK kit will include the new battery pack, IPI Control Module, wire sleeves and a complete natural gas pilot assembly along with an LP pilot orifice for those LP installations. These IRSK kits are available for order from the Wolf Steel Customer Service (Technical Service) Department. 6 Wolf Steel Product Information Bulletin PIB: 76 November 2012 Subject: IR Insert Review Last season we introduced our New Direct Vent Insert Series which included the IR3, IR3G, XIR3 and XIR4. The first units encountered a variety of challenges that we immediately addressed near the start of this year. An upgrade kit (IRSK) was also released to address related issues in the field. It included a new pilot assembly with higher temperature tolerant wire coatings, a new battery pack, replacement IPI control and wire loom sleeves. We introduced all these changes in each insert model along with some additional upgrades which are listed below. Beginning at the following relative serial numbers for each model, the nylon bushings that protected the wires, etc. where they penetrated the firebox were removed and the opening is now sealed with red RTV, only. Also, all baffles were modified so they are now removable. IR3 Beginning at serial number IR , we introduced a new pilot housing/shield (W ) along with a new burner pan cover (W ) to prevent pilot flame contamination. A transformer was also added to the insert enabling the IPI ignition system to be operated on either battery or 115 volt supply. IR3G Beginning at serial number IR3G we added 2 holes to the rear porcelain panel (W ) base so it can be secured tightly against the back of the firebox. We also added a ceramic fibre strip horizontally across the rear panel along with both side panels (W and W ). These fibre barriers were added to prevent pilot flame contamination. Note: the PRP3 s and PRP4 s also were changed to include the ceramic strip barriers. XIR3 Beginning at serial number XIR the back-up battery pack was removed. This model is equipped with a remote control system and the receiver battery may be used as battery back-up. The burner tube cover W was modified to open up the area around the pilot flame and a new pilot housing/shield (W ) was also changed to prevent pilot flame contamination. XIR4 Beginning at serial number XIR400284, the original 2 piece log support was changed to 3 pieces which include the burner cover W , the cover plate W and the rear log support W The upper baffle was also modified by adding two additional slots. More recently, the rear burner tube W was changed from the W burner. This change was made as an enhancement to the flame appearance and had no impact on the insert s performance. 7 Wolf Steel Technical Bulletin To: Subject: Napoleon Dealers and Distributors IPI Gas Control Systems TB-51 November 2012 Many of our Customers have been asking us if the Intermittent Pilot Ignition Systems we use in our gas fireplaces are subject to the same problems as those identified in the recent recall of some Monessen gas fireplace models. The short answer is No. For those of you that may be unfamiliar with the recent recall, it concerns a number of Monessen Gas Fireplaces that use the Signature Command System including many of their new models equipped with electronic ignition. This system is their own designed brand of ignition module and is unique to the Monessen brand of products. It was designed and developed specifically for Monessen and is manufactured for them in Asia. Wolf Steel gas products do not use this system and never have done so. As we understand it, the Signature Command System failure is related to an electrical component within the ignition module. This inherent design flaw can cause the control to think flame rectification has occurred and initiate the flow of gas when no flame has been established. The logic in the ignition control modules used by Wolf Steel in our gas fireplaces differs from that of Monessen. Monessen s system uses voltage as the signal mechanism for flame rectification while the systems used in Wolf Steel products use amperage. The amperage system is far more dependable and robust. It is also more expensive but has been proven to be very reliable as it is commonly used in central heating gas furnaces and boilers.
