5 HARTRIDGE LIMITED HM1000 MICRODIESEL CLEAN CABINET SAFETY INFORMATION Most accidents involving equipment operation and maintenance are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognising potentially hazardous situations beforehand. The equipment is designed to be intrinsically safe whenever possible. Guards are fitted to afford optimum operator protection. Read and understand all warning, caution, prohibition and mandatory notices and labels on the equipment before operation or carrying out any maintenance or servicing. If in doubt - ASK! Warnings, Cautions and Notes The precautionary notes in this publication, indicated by the words WARNING, CAUTION, or NOTE provide information about potential hazards to personnel or equipment. Ignoring these notes may lead to serious injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. These notes appear as follows: WARNING! INDICATES THAT A SITUATION MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO PERSONNEL. INSTRUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR AVOIDING PERSONAL INJURY. CAUTION! Indicates that conditions exist that could result in damage to equipment. Instructions are provided to prevent equipment damage. NOTE: Indicates additional information for clarification where there may be confusion. Warning Symbols Isolate the electrical supply before performing any maintenance operations. Impervious gloves and overalls should be worn if regular contact with ISO4113 test fluid is likely. Refer to the Health & Safety Data Sheets. Ensure that the servicing requirements and intervals as set out in the Maintenance section are adhered to. Operate and service this equipment only if competent to do so. Carry out regular inspections to make sure all high pressure connections are tight and safe. Ensure good levels of lighting for safe, efficient equipment operation. HL022 01/03 3

7 HARTRIDGE LIMITED HM1000 MICRODIESEL CLEAN CABINET 1. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFICATION This document describes the installation of equipment, both electrical and mechanical 1.1. Overview The Microdiesel Cabinet (HM1000) is an industrialised clean air booth designed specifically for the assembly of diesel fuel injection equipment. It enables diesel workshops to set up and maintain a clean assembly area to accepted clean room standards in order to meet the stringent demands of FIE manufacturers. Figure Specification Size 1273 mm (w) x 784 mm (d) x 1371 (h) (Refer to Fig 1). Weights (approx) Complete Unit 155 kg Filter 22.5 kg Power requirements 220VAC, 50 Hz, 10A. Filtration A pair of prefilter mats and a HEPA filter cartridge capable of particle filtration down to 0.5 um. 8 HM1000 MICRODIESEL CLEAN CABINET HARTRIDGE LIMITED 2. INSTALLATION AND OPERATION Isolate the electrical supply before performing any maintenance operations. Do not work on electrical equipment while voltage is supplied. If such cannot be avoided, e.g. for measurements, tests or adjustments, have the action carried out by qualified personnel only. To prolong the filter life, it is recommended that the Microdiesel Cabinet is installed in an enclosed assembly area. The cabinet is designed for bench top use, the recommended dimensions of which are shown in figure 2. Figure 2. The unit should be positioned on a suitable work surface/bench, located to a convenient single phase supply 50Hz). When supplied, the air flow is set to a nominal 0.7m/s at the factory and as the filters gradually block the air speed will decrease. For optimum performance it is necessary to maintain the air flow above 0.4m/s, details of which are described in Section 3 - Maintenance. 6 HL022 01/03

Do not work on electrical equipment while voltage is supplied. If such cannot be avoided, e.g. for measurements, tests or adjustments, have the action carried out by qualified personnel only. The unit is nominally set to 0.7m/s at the factory and as the filters become gradually blocked the air speed will decrease. To maintain optimum performance the air flow must be maintained above a minimum of 0.4m/s. This can be achieved by adjusting the fan controller to increase the fan speed, but once the maximum speed setting is achieved it indicates that the main HEPA filter has come to the end of its life Air Speed Checking and Adjustment This maintenance procedure requires the front cover to be removed and the motor to be running. Some rotating parts of the fan motor are exposed. Take extra care when carrying out this procedure to minimise risk of entanglement. To monitor and adjust the air speed it is recommended that a suitable Rotating Vane Anemometer is used, capable of reading between 1.0 and 0.3m/s with an accuracy of +/-5% of reading and a resolution of 0.05 m/s. 1. To monitor the air flow, power on the unit and monitor the flow at various positions across the filter face with the anemometer held approximately 100 mm from the filter face. 2. Ensure that the minimum flow recorded is not below 0.4 m/s (+/- 20%). 3. If the minimum flow is too low it will be necessary to remove the front panel (secured by six bolts) to gain access to the speed control (Fig 3). 4. Measure the flow where it was at its lowest whilst adjusting the speed controller to obtain a minimum air velocity of 0.4 m/s Note: The minimum performance acceptable is 0.4 m/s. The preferred speed is between 0.6 and 0.7 m/s. If the flow cannot be achieved it will be necessary to replace the HEPA filter (refer to section 3.3) 5. Recheck the flow at various points across the filter face and ensure the typical velocity is above 0.4 m/s. 6. Once set refit the front panel Pre Filter Replacement To extend the life of the main HEPA filter, it is recommended that the pre-filters are changed at regular 8 week intervals. These simply lie in trays accessed from the top of the unit (refer to figure 3). HL022 01/03 7

10 HM1000 MICRODIESEL CLEAN CABINET HARTRIDGE LIMITED 3.3. HEPA Filter Replacement The HEPA assembly weighs 22.5 kg. A minimum of 2 people are required to remove the unit. It is necessary to change the HEPA filter once the air speed cannot be maintained above 0.4 m/s. 1. Switch off the unit and isolate from the mains electricity supply. 2. Remove the front panel to gain access to the fan assembly jacking points (see figure 3). 3. Using a 13 mm socket, jack up the fan assembly until all pressure is removed from the HEPA filter assembly. Take care to adjust the screws alternately to keep the assembly level. 4. Slide out the HEPA filter assembly. 5. Replace with the new unit making sure that the unit is the correct way up (refer to figure 3). Note: The HEPA filter assembly has foam sealing strips around the edges. Take care when removing and refitting the assembly not to damage these. 6. Undo the jacking screws alternately until the full weight of the fan assembly is on the HEPA filter. 7. Replace the front cover. 8. Do not work on electrical equipment while voltage is supplied. If such cannot be avoided, e.g. for measurements, tests or adjustments, have the action carried out by qualified personnel only. 1. There are four fluorescent tubes fitted to the unit, two mounted on either side panel (one upper and one forward). 2. The tubes are a push fit into the holder with an additional clip to hold the fluorescent tube. To remove a fluorescent tube unclip the body of the tube first then withdraw it from the holder. 3. To replace an upper tube it will be necessary to remove the diffuser which is secured by two bolts. 4. Fit the new tube in the reverse order. HL022 01/03 9
