Change to BLUE High Density LED in Dashboard for Volvo V70-2001 VER. 1.1 1. Why we did it? Because 50% was not working. 2. We will try to show how to replace the original Lamps with LED in the Dashboard, Light regulation unit, Radio unit and AC unit. With Normal Blue 5mm LED at a cost of 1,40SEK + 1Kohm 1/4W Res. 3. Before you start you should Disconnect the (ground) from the Battery, just to be sure. Take out the panel for adjusting the brightness of dashboard lights do the following: Take away the cover for fuses on the left hand side. Inside you can feel some small plastic lockers on the top which you press down and at the same time press the panel out in the top from behind. Disconnect the cable in the back. In these 3 places the Original Lamps are fitted. Loosen the 2 screws in the back of the panel.
Bend up and out the plastic lockers to loosen the back cover with a small screw driver. Do this on both sides. Take out the pc board. The RED arrows TOP shows which side of the connector is (+). + On the picture you can see the new LED soldered on the front side with 1Kohm Resistor in serial with the LED s. We could not use the original Adapter for the lamps modified as we could in the Dashboard due to those in this unit was too small, so we soldered the LED s directly to the PC Board and the result you can see below.
The result after changed to Blue LED in the night.
To change the Lamps in the Push Button s switches and we take example with the Guard Switch. To take out the Switches you have to take out the plastic cover showing on the picture. Just start from one side and bend it out and it will slip from the plastic lockers. Then you pull out the Switches, in our case we had only 2 and one spare.
To take apart the Switch you have to bend carefully first the 2 on the long sides and then the 2 on the short sides with a small tool, we used the test pin to our volt meter. After you will have 3 parts. Then you screw out the Original Lamp and solder in the LED. If you want to go back to Original Lamps just clean as much as possible the Solder and put back the old original one.
Solder the LED with 1KOhm in serial with the LED. Make sure you get the (+) for the LED on the right place. This drawing is for the switch for Retractable Door Mirrors Original LED for Reduced Guard
The Reduced Guard LED will light up when you have pushed the Button and locked the car. Then you put all back again in reverse order and you get this result in daylight. In the night.
CCM Module Light s Take out the CCM module. There is on Youtube a lot of film how to do it. 2 screws and bend it out in the down part at the same time out in the upper part. Screw out the 4 screws which holds the cover and the 2 for the Sensor. Take out the sensor by pulling it out. As you anyway has the sensor out there is a small fan inside, clean it. Bend up and out the plastic lockers, be careful, and take of the plastic cover. Take of the plastic cover in the back
6 + is at the top of the arrow. All are in this module at the same side. 5 4 3 2 1 Take of the plastic cover in the back then you get as this picture shows. +(Plus) is on the same side. 1 We had to make the LED a special way to get the light to come as much as possible to the right place. 1 and 2 was soldered a little bit up from the PC Board as you can see from the picture. 3, 4 and 5 was in line with the PC Board. 6 was with Stiff cable put into the hole 5 to 8 mm bent upwards as the Yellow arrow on the picture shows. If not we could not get the Blue light to cover the Temp for 10 to 20.
This is how we made the LED together with 1Kohm Resistor. We also had to add one more LED to get the MAN lightening.
And the result.
Dashboard Light s To take out the Dashboard just pull out and down the Steering wheel put a coin in the upper right corner and bend out. Then you loosen the cover and take out the plastic cover for the Dashboard Screw out the 4 screws which holding the Dashboard.
+ + Not changed This is only if you have equipment for caravan. If not this will never light up. 2 of the LED s we had to bend to get the light to spread as much as possible over the Instruments. Where you see the White Dot is the direction where the Led was bend. The RED arrows TOP shows which side of the connector is (+). Picture shows modified/bended LED
We soldered the Resistor on the (+) side, just to have an indication which way to put back the LED. Be aware if you do the same way as we the Original lamp holder will not be able to hold the Original Lamp if you decide to go back to Original Lamp s. Dashboard unit after we changed to Blue LED. The result is not 100% as the LED will not spread the light the same way as the Original Lamps do. In the Computer notification display we tried to use Blue Led but then we got problem in the daytime when you could not read what the display was showing, so we changed back to Original Lamps.
And the result so far! If you solder the LED in the wrong way mixing + and -, nothing will happen as the LED will only be lightning if it is connected the right way, else it Blocks the current so there is no danger to make it wrong except for the 1KOhm Resistor in serial with the LED, if you do not use Serial Resistor the LED will Blow. Any questions pls. send e-mail to smed@nasab.com (special machines electronic department) and we will see if we can help you. You can also check out our web site http://nasab.com/volvo/tip-trick.htm where you may be can find some more interested tricks. We will be back when we has changed the Lights in the Radio module and the Lights in the Gearbox indicator. Good Luck!
