Objectives Discuss the history of the Current Industrial Reports (CIR) Discuss NASS Current Agricultural Industrial Reports (CAIR) Grain Crushings and Co-products Production Publication Update on the other CAIR programs 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 2

History of U.S. Census Bureau s Current Industrial Reports (CIR) Conducted by U.S. Census Bureau from 1904-2011 Purpose was to provide regular estimates of production, shipments, inventories, and consumption of specific manufacturing products 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 3

History of U.S. Census Bureau s Current Industrial Reports (CIR) (cont d) 125 CIR surveys which covered commodity areas as diverse as textiles, apparels, chemicals, electronic components. Reduced to 47 surveys, which covered 40,000 establishments and 1/3 of the total manufactured products produced in the U.S. Terminated by the Census Bureau in 2011 to secure funding for new programs. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 4

NASS s Current Agricultural Industrial Reports (CAIR) Congress mandated and appropriated funds for NASS to reinstate industrial surveys relating to agricultural sectors in 2014. Why? Vital to a variety of agricultural stakeholders for planning and decision making. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 5

Current Agricultural Industrial Reports Sectors Covered Grain Crushings and Co-products Production Dry and Wet Mill Flour Milling Cotton Spinning Fats and Oils Oilseed Crushings Fact-based reports on production, consumption, and stocks. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 6

Usage of CAIR Data users include but not limited to: United States Bureau of Economic Analysis- to prepare quarterly estimates of Gross National Product. United States Department of Agriculture- to provide regular estimates of production, shipments, inventories, and consumption of specific manufacturing products. United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics- to develop price indexes and estimates of productivity. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 7

Usage of CAIR (cont d) Federal Reserve Board- to prepare monthly indexes of industrial production. International Trade Administration- to monitor the effects of international trade on domestic production and meet responsibilities under the Trade Act, assess production trends, and forecast future industrial activity. Private Industry- to monitor the effects of international trade on domestic production, evaluate relationship between company and industry performances, conduct market analyses, assess current business conditions, and plan future operations. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 8

Dry and Wet Mill Producers Survey Program Changes Formerly part of the Crushings Report (Corn) Added wheat and sorghum inputs Added co-products produced CO 2 captured Differentiate corn oil between edible and nonedible High fructose corn syrup Starch, glucose and dextrose 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 10

Outreach Efforts NASS built and will maintain a list of all known ethanol mills. An operation profile was completed for each facility to determine the presence of dry and/or wet ethanol milling during 2014. collected for the nameplate production capacity documented the manner in which the mill(s) will report the headquarters can report for all milling locations or each location can report separately Primary and secondary contacts were established for the actual Dry and Wet Mill Producers surveys. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 11

Dry and Wet Mill Facilities All operations on the list which will produce ethanol will be selected for the monthly Dry and Wet Mill Producers Survey. Grains used as feedstock Products produced Co-products produced Cellulosic ethanol facilities (woodchips, stover, etc.) are not included. 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 12

2014 Data Collection NASS mailed 147 questionnaires for the Dry and Wet Mill Facilities. 136 Dry 11 Wet 2/20/2015 10:26 AM 13
