QUALITY PLUMBING & HEATING SOLUTIONS QUAL-TAP MANIFOLD SYSTEMS Centralised distribution systems using flexible Qual-PEX or Qual-PB barrier pipe offer a modern alternative approach to heating and plumbing installation systems. By choosing a centralised distribution system the contractor utilises thermoplastic pipe to its best advantage. The principle of this type of system is to locate all joints in a central location which is easily accessed for maintenance purposes thus eliminating all connections (potential leak points) below floors or concealed behind panelling, with the major advantages being: Simplified installation. Eliminates concealed joints in ceiling voids which are potential leak points. Central, more uniform supply to all services. Central service/maintenance area. Individual supplies can be isolated. Less joints result in improved flow rates. Allows downsizing of pipes giving quicker response times. Flow and expansion noises associated with metal pipework are eliminated. The Qual-TAP Manifold System provides the installer with a full range of manifolds and ancillary fittings and flexible Qual-PEX and Qual-PB barrier pipe in 12mm, 15mm, 22mm and 28mm diameters at very competitive prices. Frequently Asked Questions Some Guidelines / Technical Data HOW FAR CAN I GO WITH 12MM QUAL-PEX? Regardless of pipe size, the recommended maximum circuit length for radiators is 30m, i.e. no radiator should be more than 15m from the manifold. If the distance is greater, the original manifold location should be changed or a second manifold location may be required. The reduction is heat losses from modern buildings means radiator sizes have been reduced, enabling installers to use more flexible, smaller diameter pipes. For manifold central heating systems 12mm Qual-PEX is the most suitable diameter pipe for nearly all applications. The table below shows the typical flow rates available from 12mm & 15mm Qual-PEX manifold systems. Maximum total circuit length in metres for 12mm and 15mm Qual-PEX assuming a pump pressure of 20kPa and a Temperature drop of 11 o C Radiator Output Flow Rate Pressure loss per metre (kpa) Maximum Circuit Length (metres) (Watts) (Litres/Sec) 12mm 15mm 12mm 15mm 1400 0.04 0.6 31 1600 0.04 0.8 24 1800 0.05 1.1 19 2000 0.05 1.3 15 2200 0.06 1.6 13 2400 0.06 1.9 0.4 11 49 2600 0.07 2.2 0.5 9 42 2800 0.6 36 3000 0.08 0.6 31 3200 0.08 0.7 28 WHERE SHOULD I POSITION THE MANIFOLD? The manifolds should be located so they can be easily installed and serviced. Manifolds can be installed in a horizontal or vertical position. In larger installations, a number of remote manifolds may be used to handle groups of outlets. The manifold should ideally be located in a central position relative to the group of outlets it serves. Primary connections: Manifolds are connected to the main water supply, water heater or Heating boiler with larger bore pipe 3/4 (22mm) or 1 (28mm). Secondary connections: Each radiator or water outlet is fed by its own dedicated line from the manifold, usually 12mm or 15mm. Approved fittings may be used to repair kinked or damaged Qual-PEX Pipe-in-Pipe distribution lines, but these need to be made accessible (for retractability purposes). The Manifolds should be installed at a sufficient Height (about 250mm- 400mm) above the floor, so that the pipes can be installed straight and without tension. Clear markings at the end of each run with a permanent marker that identifies the fixture it supplies (hot or cold water) will reduce the risk of cross connections. HOW DO I FIX THE MANIFOLDS IN POSITION? QPL offers three choices of fixing system : 1. Track and Manifold hooks : a C-shaped profile with pre-drilled fixing holes suitable for use with manifold fixing hooks. 2. Termobox : Universal white manifold box with removable cover designed for recessing in wall cavity, with moulded C shape track suitable for use with manifold hooks. Available in 3 sizes. 3. Manifold Brackets : Single and double versions available in both 3/4 and 1 sizes. HOW DO I SAVE ON INSTALLATION TIME? The flexibility of 12mm Qual-PEX over traditional 1/2 Qual-PEX is a major factor in speeding up the installation and should eliminate the use of elbows completely in a manifold system. This, coupled with the need for only one drilled hole per pair of 12mm pipes has a significant time-saving effect. DO I NEED TO INSULATE QUAL-PEX PIPE-IN-PIPE As a general rule, all service pipes should be installed within the insulating envelope of the building. The conduit sleeve does not negate the requirement to insulate pipes when they pass through unheated spaces. Building regulations and requirements of local building authorities must be complied with in the planning and installation of the pipe system. Although Qual-PEX is resistant to frost burst to -20 degrees C all pipe work in exposed areas must be insulated to prevent water from freezing and to conserve energy. Insulate all hot water pipe runs where the code requires. ANY OTHER GUIDELINES ON THE USE OF QUAL-PEX PIPE-IN-PIPE Refer to the QPL technical leaflet: Qual-PEX pipe-in-pipe brochure: Guide to Good Practice. HOW DO I TEST THE SYSTEM? (Mandatory for guarantee to be valid.) The purpose of system testing is to identify any points where leakages occur at a time when they can be repaired as easily as possible, regardless of their causes. Testing takes place immediately after first fix installation, and before the pipe work is completely covered over. For systems with Mechanical connectors, high and low pressure testing is mandatory. Low-pressure test =3 Bar (air or water) for 15 minutes. High-pressure test= 6 Bar (air or water), or a pressure of 1.5 times the pressure relief valve setting ( whichever is the greater) for 1 hour. WHAT MANIFOLD SHOULD I USE? (1) Choose between Qual-TAP Compression and Pushfit connections : full range available for both. (2) Choose between Plain and valved manifolds : Valved manifolds usually used for plumbing as the isolation valves on the individual outlets can eliminate the need for a shut-off valve at the appliance. (Pressure drop per outlet : 1mBar @ 0.02 l/sec, 4mBar @ 0.04 l/sec, 10mBar @ 0.06 l/sec and 20mBar @0.08 l/sec). N.B. When testing is complete, the test pressure must be discharged from the system, where there is a risk of freezing conditions. For further information relating to Qual-PEX Pipe, please consult with Irish Agrément Certificate No. 01/0067. (3) Choose between 3/4 and 1 manifolds : Rule of thumb : use 3/4 manifolds for up to 8kW or 5 plumbing outlets; use 1 manifolds for higher loads. www.qpl.ie 7
