KERK LED-SREWS are avaiabe in standard diameters from 5/64-in (2 mm) to 15/16-in (23 mm), with standard eads from.012-in to amost 4-in (0.30 mm to 92 mm) incuding hard metric and eft hand threads. ustom sizes and eads can be specia ordered. Most stock screws are manufactured from 303 stainess stee and are produced with aydon Kerk Motion Soutions excusive precision roing process. Other materias are avaiabe on specia order. Positiona bi-directiona repeatabiity (with Kerk anti-backash nut) is within 50 micro-es (1.25 micron) and standard ead accuracy is better than 0.0006-in./in. (mm/ mm). Lead-screw ssembies: nti-ackash Technoogies xia Take-up Mechanism The standard method for taking up backash is to bias two nut haves axiay using some type of compiant spring. (Wavy washer, compression spring, rubber washer, etc.) NUT LF SPRING PRELOD NUT LF LED-SREW TENOLOGIES The unit is very stiff in the direction in which the nut haf is oaded against the fank of the screw thread. owever, in the direction away from the screw thread, the nut is ony as axiay stiff as the amount of preoad which the spring exerts. NUT LF SPRING FORE LOD GINST SREW FLNK For exampe, if the maximum axia oad to which the system is subjected is 50 bs., the amount of spring preoad must be equa to, or greater than, 50 bs. in order to maintain intimate screw/nut contact. The probems arising from preoading in this manner are increased drag torque and nut wear. Obviousy, the higher the oad at the screw/nut interface, the higher the required torque to drive the nut on the screw and the more susceptibe the unit is to nut wear. n aternate method repaces the spring with a stiff spacer sized to fit exacty between the two nut haves. NUT LF (L) STIFF SPER NUT LF There is no excessive preoad force at the interface and the unit is capabe of carrying high axia oads in either direction with no backash. This is fine initiay. owever, as use time increases, wear begins on the nut threads causing a gap to deveop between the spacer (L) and the nut haves. 1 2 NUT LF (L) NUT LF This gap ( 1 + 2) is now the amount of backash which has deveoped in the unit. This backash can be removed by repacing the stiff spacer with a new spacer equa to (L + 1 + 2). This process, athough effective, woud be extremey costy and difficut to impement on a continuous basis. The Soution What is needed, then, is a stiff spacer which wi continuay expand to accommodate the wear which occurs during use. This is done by creating a spacer threaded at one end with a compimentary nut torsionay biased to advance when a gap deveops. The thread at the end of the spacer is a fine heix such that an axia oad wi not backdrive the nut once spacer growth has occurred. L The preoad on the unit is ony the amount necessary to turn the spacer nut on the spacer rod and is independent of the externa system oadings. We thus have a sef-wear compensating unit which has extremey ow frictiona drag torque yet high axia stiffness. L + 1+ 2 11

Kerk eadscrew nuts feature sef-ubricating poymers. When maximum performance is required, Kerkote and ack Ice TFE coatings provide unmatched resuts in the most demanding appications. The purpose of TFE coating is to suppy a more even distribution of ubricant than is normay found when using standard sef-ubricating pastics on stee. The wear ife, coefficient of friction and resuting torque to drive a ead screw assemby are highy governed by the abiity of the engineered pastic to suppy sufficient ubrication to the nut/screw interface. The inabiity of the interna ubricating agents in some pastics to consistenty migrate to the surface may resut in erratic drag torques and unpredictabe wear. Kerkote TFE oating Kerkote TFE coating covering the entire screw surface resuts in an extremey even ubrication distribution. Test resuts indicate system torque requirements are consistenty ow with itte or no change in required frictiona driving torque, even with changes in motor R.P.M. aydon Kerk Motion Soutions has deveoped a custom composition Kerkote TFE specificay for our ead screw and nut materias. It is appied using an automated process and provides extended nut ife and smooth operation with itte additiona cost. Kerkote TFE is a soft coating, a ong-term dry ubricant that is optimized for softer pastics ike acetas and nyons, with or without mechanica reinforcement. Lubrication to the nut/screw interface occurs by the nut picking up Kerkote TFE partices from the coating as we as from the migration of the interna ubricant within the pastic nut. though care is taken to ensure that chips and voids do not occur in the coating, sma voids have been shown to have no effect on system performance. The transfer of TFE to the nut continues throughout the operating ife of the assemby as ong as the nut periodicay traves over areas with Kerkote TFE coating. The ubricant, athough soid, aso has some spreading abiity as in fuid ubricants. Kerkote TFE coated screws provide the maximum eve of sef-ubrication and shoud not be additionay ubricated or used in environments where ois or other ubricant contamination is possibe. ack Ice TFE oating ack Ice TFE coating shares many of the benefits of Kerkote TFE but, in contrast, is a hard coating that offers exceptiona durabiity in a types of environments, with virtuay any type of poymer nut. ack Ice TFE coating remains on the screw, offering a ow friction surface upon which the nut traves. Rather than acting as a dry ubricant, ack Ice TFE is an anti-friction coating whose surface properties dispace the meta to which it is appied. Though it is not intended for use with meta or gass fiber reinforced nuts, ack Ice TFE is bonded securey to the screw s surface and can withstand abrasion from contamination, rigid poymer systems, fuid impingement and wash down appications. ack Ice TFE can be used in the presence of more aggressive environment conditions, or anywhere reduced friction and a permanent coating is desired. oth Kerkote and ack Ice TFE coatings offer the advantages of dry ubrication. These are maintenance-free coatings that are designed to ast the ife of the product. They are intended to be used without additiona ubricants, thereby further increasing the vaue of Kerk ead-screw assembies through eimination of the most common faiure of screw driven drives, ubrication faiure. There are certain appications where externa ubrication may be desired. These incude the use of nut materias such as gass reinforced pastic or meta. Greases, when used propery can provide unique capabiities and aydon Kerk Motion Soutions does offer a seection of greases deveoped specificay for these appications.
