It s purpose is to provide extremely reliable power supplying for oil drilling, processing and shipping facilities. The owner is Al Furat Petroleum Company (AFPC) Syria. Area covered by the distribution network is some 100 km 2. The power system includes: 18 distributed generators with dual fuel turbines (gas/diesel) and total of 200MW power, double 66kV overhead lines to 4 major remote sites, about 75 large consumers and 400 major devices (transformers, breakers, motors, etc) requiring supervision and automatic control.. Location: Tanak Generators: 3 Devices: 67 Large consumers: 11 Input/output signals: 1200 25km 2x66kV Location: El Ward Generators: 3 Devices: 45 Large consumers: 9 Input/output signals: 900
POWER GENERATION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - OMAR in Al Furat oil fields - Omar, Syria Distributed Control System Requirements ABB Omar DCS acts as a single and integral system regardless of it s wide distribution - up to 55 km. DCS controls/supervises: 18 generators 250 breakers 40 transformers 30 valves 30 motors 15 software PID regulators 8200 physical I/O signals 2500 serial I/O signals. Main tasks of ABB DCS in Omar are: Supervision & Control of all major Power System equipment from central place in Omar Control Building - Control Room. Ensuring quality - voltage and frequency stability. Ensuring availability - load shedding functions preventing black-outs and disturbances in vital production facilities. Ensuring efficiency - coordination of generators, optimizing and fault finding tools (reports, trends, process overviews, event & alarm lists, system status, system list,...). Integration of 11 external control subsystems in the DCS (various dedicated PLCs) via serial links.
Automation and control system POWER GENERATION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - OMAR in Al Furat oil fields - Omar, Syria Scope Entire power system is controlled by process controllers and runs fully automatic. Each part of it can be controlled and monitored from any operator station. Control includes: breakers, transformers, motors and whole subsystems like Fuel (gas/diesel) system, Instrument air, Water treatment, Fire water, etc. POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (PMS) PMS is a group of dedicated programs in ABB DCS controller. Main PMS functions are: monitoring interconnection status of the power system coordination of generators, frequency/voltage regulation calculation of consumption per load, island, area and site monitoring spare capacity of running generator sets shedding (disconnecting) preselected loads within 100ms disabling start of large loads if exceeding spare capacity monitoring and recording power consumption peaks warning and suggesting messages for the operator reports: production, consumption, running hours, peaks,... Features DCS includes features like: redundancy (at all levels), MODBUS serial links, GPS time sinchronization, long term data storage, alarm acknowledge recording, data logging and trend displays, operator s multilevel authority system (login + password), training system,...

POWER GENERATION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - OMAR in Al Furat oil fields - Omar, Syria Operator screen example: OM_HV2001L presents electrical distribution detail - 20kV left busbar in Omar with 2 Frame 6 generators. Measured values are updated each few seconds. Indications of breakers position and status are simple and selfexplanatory. To change breaker position, operator selects it on the screen and than uses keyboard (or track-ball unit) to issue relevant openclose command.
POWER GENERATION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - OMAR in Al Furat oil fields - Omar, Syria Operator screen example: Turbine and Generator overview shows actual process values and main parameters. Status is indicated with texts and symbols. Operator s orders are issued from the screen/keyboard e.g.: to start/stop the turbine operator merely acts on Start screen pushbutton in group Master control.
Intea s contribution POWER GENERATION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - OMAR in Al Furat oil fields - Omar, Syria Scope - general application analysis level 1 software (type-circuits and data-base) multiplying and implementation load shedding concept design level 2 software (logic & sequences) process facilities and Power Management System (excl. generators control and coordination) operator stations - customising and display design simulation programs factory acceptance tests with the client hardware installation (partly) commissioning & start-up training Scope - sections Intea was responsible for configuration and application software in all Process Controllers, Operator Stations and Information Management Stations, except generators (control and coordination) package. Duration and results In the period December 1996 - July 1997, 5 Intea s engineers worked on site (in shifts) until successful handover. INTEA s work was recognized, by ABB project leader/manager and end-user AFPC, as outstanding and highly professional. Post start-up activities - Intea 1.) October 1998. - Residence engineering contract. Two Intea s engineers (back-to-back) during 6 months held operation and maintenance training courses for the client. 2.) May 1999. - Y2K upgrade project. DCS s Year 2000 compliance ensured. Project expansions awarded to Intea 1.) February 2000. - Maleh expansion project.
