3 Part 1 Background Power Grid Profile In 2015, the total cross-region transmission capacity of SGCC (State Grid Corp. of China) is 60,660MW, and the maximum transmission capacity of a single HVDC link reaches 8,000MW. 4 Part 1 Background New power grid features As seen from many actual instances, the AC/DC chain reactions caused by a single contingency becomes new features of power grid. 1. Huge impact. One AC fault may cause simultaneous commutation failures of multiple HVDC links, and the instantaneous power impact can reach 32GW, which far exceeds the impact of a normal AC fault. 2. Wide range. The AC fault/disturbance at the receiving end of HVDC links may cause huge impact at the sending end, which is thousands of km far away. 4

5 Part 1 Background Problem: Traditional electro-mechanical transient simulation tools with quasi-steady-state HVDC models can not analyzes such chain reactions accurately. Solution: Develop hybrid simulation technology, which models HVDC links and their nearby AC grids by EMT method, and models all other AC grids by TSA method. TSA TSA EMT 5

7 Part 2 ADPSS hybrid simulation technology ADPSS (Advanced Digital Power System Simulator) is developed by China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) with independent intellectual property rights. ADPSS originates from PSASP (Power System Analysis Software Package), which is also developed by CEPRI since 1973 and takes over 99% market share in China. ADPSS includes two forms as stand-alone and cluster version. Standalone version supports complete offline simulation and analysis modules, and cluster version supports parallel computing and real-time simulation in addition. 7

Contingency recurrence (case 1) At 14:14 on June 12, 2015, gas protection of pole I of Tian-Zhong HVDC (±800kV 8000MW 2210km) acted, and then the pole I high end blocked and lost power of 1960MW, and the power of pole II high end increased to 2040MW. The stability control devices acted correctly to trip two generators at rectifier end Recorder Simulation

Contingency recurrence (case 2) At 12:31 on Nov. 6, 2013, a single-phase short circuit occurred at a 500kV line in East China power grid, and the line tripped after a unsuccessful reclosing, which caused 2 commutation failure (CF) of Fufeng HVDC (±800kV), 2 CF of Linfeng HVDC (±500kV), and 1 CF of Genan HVDC. 12

Analysis of AC/DC hybrid grid During operation mode calculation of SGCC, a hybrid simulation model is built to analyze the interrelationship between AC and DC systems, which includes 22,000 AC nodes (TSA model) and 7 HVDC links (EMT model). Analysis of AC/DC hybrid grid All N-1 contingencies in East China grid are screened, and the contingencies which cause simultaneous HVDC commutation failures are identified.
