The Kappel Principle The Kappel principle for ship propellers has been refined over 20 years via extensive R&D Inspired by nature Kappel is today the most efficient propeller design, increasing propulsive efficiency by 2-5%, compared to conventional propellers (by reducing tip losses) Adopted by aviation The Kappel rights was acquired by MDT in 2012 Can be applied on both FPP and CPP Reduces propeller induced pressure impulses. Thus larger propeller diameters can be applied (lower rpm) Now sailing the seven seas < 4 >

Rudder Bulb Design Optimisation procedure Rudder Bulb Optimisation The rudder bulb solution is customized for each individual project MAN Diesel & Turbo uses an in-house developed CFD optimisation routine based on parametric design variables Typically 50-100 different geometries are analysed Rudder bulb gain depends apart from an optimum shape - on thrust loading coefficient and hub/propeller diameter ratio. < 5 >

Design Demonstration Contract No cure no pay Design Demonstration Contract specifying: Scope of design, supply and price Identification of reference conditions Technical basis for Kappel propeller gain Agreed time frames for model test verification MDT s participation in model test Warranted gain(s) Finalization of design for production and class approval < 6 >
