PREFACE Forkifts pay an important roe in many work paces. Like a vehices, they need reguar maintenance & safe operation to function efficienty. But because they are unike cars & trucks in many ways, operator needs to be speciay trained & authorised. Main aim of making this booket is to avoid accidents due to forkift trucks & damage to property. To avoid accidents it is very much necessary to drive a forkift truck with extra care & caution. Ony authorised & competent persons shoud operate the forkift. The ast page of this booket contains identity card for an authorised forkift driver. Paste your photograph, obtain stamp of Safety Dept. & signature of authority concerned. A authorised forkift drivers shoud carry this Identity card aong with them every time. OUR FORKLIFT IS OUR ASSET! A forkift is a costy equipment which, if not propery used & maintained, can cause injury to the operator & others aso. It may cause damage to materia & equipments. To avoid this, here are some of the visua & operationa checks given for your ready reference. Pease spend a itte time to carry out a operationa checks before driving. These are mentioned in sections A & B. This wi go a ong way in ensuring safe & efficient operation. In other sections some instructions are given for oading and unoading materia, safe driving, parking, etc. Foow these instructions for safe operations. Forkift accidents have many causes If forkifts are operated incorrecty or careessy, they can : Ú Tip over. Ú Fa off a oading dock. Ú Coide with a vehice, equipment or a person. Ú Drop a oad on a pedestrian, the operator or on other equipment. Operators aso receive injuries when they : Ú Jump on or off a fork ift. Ú Pace their arms or egs outside the forkift. Ú Operate in an unsafe manner. 4

A Before operating Forkift, Check the... Fue eve. Engine oi eve. Radiator water eve. Hydrauic sump tank oi eve. (with forks on the ground) Brake oi eve. Transmission oi eve (with engine iding). Engine oi pressure. Hr. meter reading. Condition of tyres and mounting nuts. Condition for the Parking brake. Check the over-head guard & oad back-rest 5

B Now make these operationa checks Check the brakes. (Peda operation) Make sure that horn is working propery. Check head ights, reverse ight & reverse horn. Check the mast function & attachment function (if any). Note the radiator water temperature. Check the steering mechanism. Know the safe Working Load (SWL) capacity of your Fork Lift Truck & aso weight & size of materia to be ifted. If there is any diese or oi eakage from Fork- Lift or excess smoke emission, report immediatey to maintenance department and dispay Do Not Operate tag 6

C Whie Lifting & Stacking materia Don t aow bystanders whie you are stacking. Keep an eye on over-head obstructions. Do not aow any one to ride on forks. If absoutey necessary then, use a cage paet to eevate a person. Whie oading in orry put stoppers on front whees of orry. Keep yoursef & others cear of the upright since its members move. 7

Don t ift unstabe oads. Don t doube-up oads. Don t add counter weights. Spit the oad. Keep sufficient distance between two forks to maintain baance. 8

D Safety in Fork-Lift Driving Do not drive Fork-Lift as a racing car. Drive sow, so as to be in tota contro. Drive the truck at moderate speed to enabe you stop it immediatey. Aways Sow down around corners. Don t raise or ower the oad whie you are moving. Keep the forks above the ground eve just enough to cear the obstruction. Avoid sudden starts & stops. Do not reverse the Forkift whie in motion. 9

Whie turning, watch out for enough space at the rear end. Due to rear whee steering the truck tends to swing at the rear. DRIVE UNLOADED FORKLIFT TRUCK MORE CAREFULLY!!! Unoaded forkifts are ess stabe than oaded because, the counter weights in a truck are so designed that it becomes propery baanced when it is oaded. Do not keep your feet on brake peda whie driving. Uness unavoidabe (as in case of container handing). Do not drive with raised oad, it wi make your Forkift unstabe. Do not change the trave direction from forward to reverse or vice versa to create a braking effect, or to bring the Forkift to hat. It may cause irreversibe damage to the transmission. 10

Dispay tag on Fork-Lift if it needs repairing. FORKLIFT UNDER MAINTENANCE DO NOT DRIVE Respect your co-workers, your machines & materia you re moving. Watch out for pedestrians. Do not aow a co-rider. Keep to the Left whenever possibe. Use horn ony as a warning signa. If you are unabe to see in front, drive in the reverse direction. 11

Stop & sound your horn at bind corners. Use traffic mirrors. Keep a safe working distance from the truck ahead. Drive sowy on wet & sippery roads and aso be carefu on speed breakers. SLOPE Whie carrying oad down the sope drive in the reverse direction & forward whie unoaded. 12

Do not trave down a sope in neutra gear. Put your arms, feet & head inside the truck. Concentrate on your driving. Day dreaming can cause accidents. 13

When working on patforms, put a stopper at the edge Do not drive your Forkift Truck in fammabe / exposive storage area uness equipped with necessary safety device. E PARKING A FORKLIFT Pace forks on foor, stop the engine, use hand-brakes whie parking. Do not park Forkift Truck in front of Emergency Exit, Fire Hydrants, Fire Extinguishers, & in Aises. Park away from traffic, preferaby on a fat surface. 14

Report a accidents to your supervisor to avoid reoccurrence. Maintain a judicious & detaied record (hour meter reading, date etc.) 1) Your daiy check ist. 2) Routine schedued maintenance / preventive maintenance carried out on your Forkift. 3) Unschedued maintenance / Breakdown repairs carried out. 4) Due date for next preventive maintenance schedue. Avoid poution, cean your equipment we. A eakage can be easiy detected or rectified. 15

Do not use forkift for other appication ike demoishing construction structures, to obtain coconuts, etc. Mention Safe working oad (SWL) capacity on forkift. Data & Capacity pate shoud be ceary dispayed. 16

CHANGING AND FILLING LPG TANKS Changing tanks may seem ike a very simpe task, however, there are some important safety points to foow. Be sure you foow these basic rues when changing LPG tanks. Turn off the LPG tank and run the engine unti the engine stops. Then turn off the ignition switch. Change tanks ony in we-ventiated areas. Never aow open fames of any kind that means no smoking, no running engines and no starting engines because of the danger of sparks. Check coupings, ines and the tank for damage. Be sure couping seas and o-rings are in pace and free from any kind of damage. Avoid dropping or in any way damaging the tank. Be sure that the tank mounting and ocks are secure. Never attempt to start a Forkift truck in the presence of a fue eak, as it can cause an exposion. 17

ENVIRONMENT Ensure optima use of natura resources such as water, fue, oi and ubricants by - Using ony the required quantity. Avoiding eakages, spiages and breakages. Reporting if wastage occurs and take appropriate preventive action for the future. Ensure environment friendy disposa of waste e.g. used oi, used battery, used tyres. Concentration of CO-gas due to truck operation in a cosed environment shoud not exceed maximum aowabe imits, get your Forkift Truck maintenance done reguary.
