UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTtJRB Bureau of Agricultural Economics Crop Reporting Board liruits (Noncitrus) PRODUCTION, FARM DISPOSITION, VALUE, AND UTILIZATION OF SALES, 1944-1949 This publication presents statistics on production, farm disposition, price, value, and utilization of noncitrus fruits for the crop years 1944 through 1949. Data for years prior to 1944 are shown in the publication "Fruits (non-citrus)" issued May 1948. For connnercial apples, production is sho1-m by varieties for selected States and areas. The data in this bulletin are revised on the basis of the 1950 Census of Agriculture. - The categories of use given here cover first commercial use of fruit and not necessarily final utilization. For example, dried apple chops made into apple butter are considered as dried apples and not as apple butter, and frozen fruits used for preserves are included under frozen fruits. Fruit bought fresh by housewives and later canned or otherwise processed is included in fresh sales. The difference between total production and production having lue is the quantity not utilized because of economic conditions, including harvested fruit and excess cullage of harvested fruit. The difference between production and sales of fruit is the quantity consumed in farm museholds and quantities not utilized because of economic conditions. Estimates of the commercial apple crop refer to the total production of apples in the commercial apple areas of each State. The season average prices shown in this report are estimated average returns to growers for all methods of sale. Value of production is the season average price multiplied by production having value, including fruit ed on farms. Value of sales is the season average price multiplied by the uantity sold. The values shown are for the marketing season or crop year, and should not be confused with calendar-year income. Two series of United States season average prices are shown in :the various tables. These were computed by weighting the State prices by production having value and also by quantities sold. Prepared by E. o. Schlotzhauer and o. M. Frost with the assistance of the State Statisticians and under the general direction of R. Royston, Head, Division of Fruit and Vegetable Statistics. - 1 -
