Introduction RHEOLATE 35 D is a 5% active polyether polyol-based associative thickener designed to impart high-shear viscosity in conventional latex and water-reducible systems. RHEOLATE 35 D has low odour and is a VOC-free, high-performance, non-ionic associative thickener. It provides exceptional flow and levelling and is particularly suitable for use with smallparticle-size binders in gloss and semi-gloss paints. RHEOLATE 35 D imparts viscosity in the high-shear-rate region improving film-build and providing the related increased hiding. RHEOLATE 35 D may be used alone or, if greater mid-shear-rate viscosity is required, with a co-thickener. RHEOLATE 35 D has outstanding colour acceptance and stability. In addition it does not impair recoatability, intercoat adhesion or blocking resistance. Key Benefits Provides high-shear viscosity Provides Newtonian flow Excellent flow and levelling No influence on film properties Low odour and VOC-free Chemical and Physical Data Composition polyether polyol solution Colour Gardner -1 to 3 Density Viscosity Solvent 1.2 g/cm³ 1-8 mpa s Brookfield LVT, spindle 4, speed 2 rpm, @25 C (77 F) water Incorporation and Levels of use RHEOLATE 35 D can be used as supplied, or if required, diluted with water or glycol for easier incorporation. Addition can take place at any point in the paint manufacturing process. It can be post-added. However, addition before dilution of the mill-base is recommended. RHEOLATE 35 D contributes mainly to highshear-rate viscosity and can be used to modify the rheological properties of other thickeners including cellulose, polyacrylates (ASE and HASE), clays and urethane associative thickeners. Information regarding its co-use with other RHEOLATE, BENTONE and BENAQUA rheological additives is available on request. The typical levels of use for RHEOLATE 35 D are.5 to 5.% (as delivered), by weight of the system. To achieve optimum properties the system s surfactant blend might need modification. Further advice is available on request. 2
RHEOLATE 35 D for parquet lacquers Key application properties of parquet lacquers High hardness and scratch resistance Excellent chemical resistance Superior water resistance The physical and chemical resistance of a parquet lacquer formulation is determined by the selected binder technology chosen. The binder represents about 8% of the formulation of a parquet lacquer. The space left for the additive cocktail is therefore limited. Rheology of parquet lacquers Parquet lacquers are horizontally applied and therefore require Newtonian flow to ensure excellent levelling. The thickener needs to provide the required flow without negatively impacting on the film properties. Poor levelling will immediately be noticed as gloss differences that are caused by variations in film thickness and by brush mark drags or orange peel surfaces after roller application. Newtonian thickener samples evaluated The performance of RHEOLATE 35 D was evaluated in comparison to 3 competitive Newtonian thickeners. RHEOLATE 35 D has no influence on film properties Physical properties: Pendulum hardness 5 µm on glass plate 12 1 8 1 C system parquet lacquer (Satin) None of the tested rheological additives noticeably influenced the key performance property of hardness in the tested formulations. 6 4 2 after 24 hours after 1 week after 4 weeks RHEOLATE 35 D 47 82 9 Competitor 1 48 86 92 Competitor 2 36 81 84 Competitor 3 5 83 88 It is clearly seen that the 2C parquet lacquer showed nearly the same hardness after 24 hours as the 1C system did after a week to reach the final performance. 2 C high performance parquet lacquer (Satin) 12 1 8 6 4 2 after 24 hours after 1 week after 4 weeks RHEOLATE 35 D 7 75 76 Competitor 1 74 73 78 Competitor 2 7 71 74 Competitor 3 72 73 75 1 C high performance wood coating (Glossy) 12 1 8 6 As mentioned above, these results confirmed that the physical resistance of a parquet lacquer is mainly determined by the selected binder technology chosen. 4 2 after 24 hours after 1 week after 4 weeks RHEOLATE 35 D 72 111 119 Competitor 1 75 11 12 Competitor 2 74 19 118 Competitor 3 7 11 115 Chemical properties Additional tests with chemicals stains like coffee, tea, red wine and water clearly showed that all selected rheological additives also did not influence the chemical or water resistance. 5
RHEOLATE 35 D is highly efficient for Newtonian flow Loading level overview for each parquet lacquer system The loading level of the thickeners to achieve a target viscosity of 25-3 sec. was tested in the 3 systems. The lower the loading of the thickener, the lower the potential influence on film properties and the larger the formulation flexibility. RHEOLATE 35 D showed the best results in every case. Newtonian flow To mesure the Newtonian flow performance we chose a higher viscosity of 1 sec. in a DIN 4 mm flow cup. The aim was to ensure that we could mesure a noticeable differentiation in the tested samples. The study was made in the 1C high performance wood coating (Glossy). 11 Amplitude sweep 1 1/s viscosity 1 sec. / DIN 4 mm flow cup 1 9 8 7 6 tan( ) 5 4 3 2 1.1 1 1 % 1 Strain RHEOLATE 35D Competitor 1 Competitor 2 Competitor 3 All thickeners tested in the Amplitude sweep 1 1/s, provided the recommended Newtonian flow behaviour. RHEOLATE 35 D has the highest tan δ, so the best flow-out properties. 6
Loading level in relation to viscosity In the 1C high performance wood coating based on the pure acrylic dispersion, the comparison of loading levels to reach both 25-3 sec. and 1 sec. in DIN 4 mm cup shows the excellent efficiency of RHEOLATE 35 D. Summary RHEOLATE 35 D is a VOC-free PEPO thickener which provides excellent flow and levelling in parquet lacquers. In all the tested lacquers formulations RHEOLATE 35 D appears to be the most efficient thickener. RHEOLATE 35 D does not influence the key film properties of the parquet lacquers and is by far the best rheological additive to select.
