enri érôme Bertini 198 186 enri érôme Bertini was born in London on October 8, 198 1, but his amily returned to Paris six months later. e received his early musical education rom his ather and his brother, a uil o Clementi. e was considered a child rodigy and at the age o 1 his ather took him on a tour o England, olland, Flanders, and ermany where he was enthusiastically received. Ater studies in comosition in England and Scotland he was aointed roessor o music in Brussells but returned to Paris in 181. t is known that Bertini gave a concert with Franz Liszt in the Salons Pae on Aril 0, 188. The rogram included a transcrition by Bertini o Beethoven s Symhony No. in A major or eight hands the other ianists were Sowinsky and Schunke.) e was also admired as a chamber music erormer, giving concerts with his riends Fontaine violin) and Franchomme cello). e remained active in and around Paris until around 188 when he retired rom the musical scene. n 1859 he moved to Meylan near renoble) where he died on Setember 0, 186. Bertini concertized widely but was not as celebrated a virtuoso as either Kalkbrenner or enri erz. One o his contemories Marmontel) described his laying as having Clementi s evenness and clarity in raid assages as well as the quality o sound, the manner o hrasing, and the ability to make the instrument sing characteristic o the school o ummel and Moschelès. Thomas Taer, in the reace o his edition o the Études O.100 ublished by Ditson, says: e was in his time a shining examle o the most admirable qualities o an artist. Living in an age o garish virtuosity, and hailed as a brilliant executant himsel, he maintained nevertheless the most rigorous standards o musicianshi in his laying, in his comositions, and in the music which he aeared beore the ublic to interret. This is the more remarkable when one considers that his manhood was reached during the luxuriant eriod o French romanticism and that the extravagances o the literary outburst were relected in the musical movements o the time. Virtuosity was subjected to sore temtations and many succumbed. Bertini stood or the sounder qualities o the artist and gradually acquired an extended and remunerative restige. is lie was singularly devoid o incident and oicial distinction, but the legacy o edagogic works which he has let to us and his honorable activity give it every right to be called a success. Bertini was celebrated as a teacher. Antoine Marmontel, who devoted the second chater o his work on celebrated ianists to Bertini, writes e was unsurassed as a teacher, giving his lessons with scruulous care and the keenest interest in his uils rogress. Ater he had given u teaching, a number o his uils continued with me, and recognized the soundness o the rinciles drawn rom his instruction. t is above all in the secial class o studies and carices, that Bertini s immense oularity is ounded. t is here that he occuied a unique osition and oened the ath over which the next generation o comosers was to rush ater him. n each o his numerous collections o studies, embracing every degree o diiculty, he has insistently given to every iece, easy or diicult, brie or extended, a character o salient melody. The technical roblem to be overcome resents itsel as a song; even where the study is devoted to the roblem o velocity the general contour alls into a melodic curve, and this is the irst and transcendent cause o the universal success o these ieces, which are, urthermore, natural in resect to rhythm and careully thought out harmonically. Robert Schumann, in a review o a iano trio in the esammelte Schriten, comments that Bertini writes easily lowing harmony but that the movements are too long. e continues: With the best will in the world, we ind it diicult to be angry with Bertini, yet he drives us to distraction with his erumed Parisian hrases; all his music is as smooth as silk and satin. erman sentimentality has never areciated French elegance. Bertini is best remembered today or his iano method Le Rudiment du ianiste, and his 0 books o aroximately 500 studies. 1 See enri Bertini ianiste virtuose, comositeur de musique renoble, 1999) by Pascal Beyls.
