Overview Description The MCX106 Hall Effect Level Sensor electromechanically measures the deviation of the sensor and its mount from a gravity reference. The reference is an oil damped pendulous mass, having freedom in one plane about a fixed center point. The sensor can be used as a component in a system requiring a reference for control with respect to gravity. The original application sensed the angle of the boom on a rough terrain forklift. Features Modular design. Compact unit can be mounted on any vertical surface. Totally enclosed in a rugged cast aluminum housing. Easy to wire. Connections between the controller and the sensor are made through MS connectors or with 3 exposed wires. Excellent sensitivity. The shaft supporting the pendulous mass and the magnet assembly is mounted on ball bearings for smooth, low-friction rotation. Oil dampened to ignore extraneous vibration. DC input and output voltages designed for analog and microcontroller interface. Theory of Operation The MCX106 accepts a regulated 5 to 8 Vdc from a controller and returns a ratiometric voltage output equal to 50% of the input voltage at null. As the sensor rotates clockwise to 45, the output voltage decreases proportionally to 25% of the input voltage. As the sensor is rotated counter clockwise through center and to 45, the voltage will increase proportionately up to 75% of the input voltage. Input voltage CCW 45 Null CW 45 5 Vdc 3.75 Vdc 2.50 Vdc 1.25 Vdc 8 Vdc 6. 00 Vdc 4.00 Vdc 2.00 Vdc 4

Device has no reverse polarity protection. 0.04% (.023 ) maximum, when brought to the same position from opposite positions. When the sensor is rotated clockwise from null, as viewed from the closed end of the cast housing, output (Pin B positive, Pin C negative) will decrease. Determine the location on any convenient vertical surface. Reference mounting hole locations, above. Drill and tap four #8/32 UNC-28 holes. Drill a 19/32 pilot hole at the center of the four holes. With the connector of the sensor pointed upwards, the sensor is approximately at null. Install 2 each of the provided cleats and screws in the bottom holes, leaving the screws loose enough to get the flange beneath the cleats. Slide the flange of the sensors beneath these two cleats and then install the other two. Tighten the four cleats so the sensor is snug but can still be turned by hand for final leveling. 6

Wiring EMI/RFI will be present in varying degrees in any environment that has static electricity, power lines, radio equipment, solenoid switching, etc. To avoid the harmful effects of EMI/RFI, use KW01026 braided (not foil) shield cable with a minimum of 75% shielding. Terminate the shield at both ends to the connector shell with the length short as possible. See Ordering Information, Related Product, page 4. Standard unshielded cables can be ordered from Sauer-Danfoss. KW01009, a two foot coiled cable extending to ten feet is available, which is completely assembled with mating MS connectors for ease of installation. See Ordering Information, Related Product, page 4. All electrical connections are made to the sensor through a 6 pin MS connector or 3 wire feed-thru connector, see below for connector diagrams. Reverse power polarity may damage the sensor. 6 Pin MS Mating Connector F E D A C B + Power - Red Output - White Ground - Black Feed-thru Connector Red White Black P200 040 P200 053 Final Leveling After all of the wiring has been completed, only minor adjustment is needed to bring the sensor to null: 1. Raise or lower the machine to level. 2. 3. Slowly turn the sensor until the output voltage (Pin B to C) equals one half the supply voltage. Tighten the cleats so that the sensor is secured. 7
